82 t0 89 steering column swap??
82 t0 89 steering column swap??
Howdy All.
I have an 89 IROC-Z and the steering column is trash. I also have a 82 Z28. The 89 does not have the chip in the key, so I was wondering if I can just swap the columns out and not have any problems with the electronics of the vehicle. Should everything match up? Thank You All for your advice so far and God Bless US All.

It's physically a direct fit,... but the wiring inside the columns are very different. 82-83 had a very specific wiper system that's not compatible with other years.
Your best bet is to find another replacement column that's from an 84-89 Camaro of Firebird. A auto or stick column will work; but if you use one that's not from the same type of tranny as your car than you might need to flip the ignition box connector so it will fit. (Manual columns have a 'saftey' lever near the key cylinder that Auto columns do not.)
An 89 Firebird Column with VATS should work too,... The Vats connector would just be left unplugged.
