82 shifter **** conversion

I have the T style shifter in my bird right now and I want to install my 82 knight rider style shifter. Would it be hard to convert/install or can it only be done with one of these aluminum billet reproduction shifter kits to retrofit it?

Re: 82 shifter **** conversion

Do you have the 83-84 t-style or the 85-92 t style?

Re: 82 shifter **** conversion

Since your profile is incomplete I have no idea what year you're working on, but here is the info you're looking for.

The only thing that holds the shift **** on is either a c-clip under the round button (82-84), or a u-clip on the front of the shift **** (85-92).

You might be able to use your existing shift assembly or you might have to swap some of the parts from an older unit. The issue is that even though all of the parts from 82-92 are pretty much interchangeable, if your car is '85+ and has an overdrive trans I believe the shifter will be different.

Re: 82 shifter **** conversion

If you want to use an original **** the easiest way is to find a camaro shifter between 83-86 which are referred to as the eight ball shifters. The **** will slide on with very little modification to it. The billet ***** use set screws and a drill bit to get the **** to sit at the right height to work. I had an original **** so I went option one.

Re: 82 shifter **** conversion

Here is what you need for the use of an original ****
http://www.ebay.com/itm/1985-Camaro-...RWxrUr&vxp=mtr.

The modifications you will have to do are as follows.
When you install the **** you'll notice that one of the notches will have to be modified in order to get the **** to sit past the groove for the c-clip, easy fix with a dremel tool. When you go to put the button on the stem you'll notice it will stick up higher than it should. This is a trial and error part but be careful not to cut off too much or the button will be to far down to work. Don't be afraid to take it back off and reinstall it as many times as it takes to get it right. Once its getting close then sandpaper will work to make finer adjustments to the stem for the button to sit just right.. You want the button to sit just above the edge of the **** like its peeking over the top of it.
To see what im talking about use this link and scroll down to the interior picture and save it to your computer and zoom in. Its the best example I could find.

Re: 82 shifter **** conversion

Pretty sure the auto shifter itself from 82-83 was different from all others ?

Aren't those early years the type with a removable plastic rod - with a bunch of round studs along it's length - thru the middle of the shifter ? Didn't the 84+ have a permanent piece of flat plastic in the center of the shifter arm ??

Re: 82 shifter **** conversion

I appreciate your help guys thank you, I need to think on this one which route I'm going to take. I'm doing this on a budget so I'm caught between buying the $100 aluminum shifter with the retrofit kit or just buying this $50 piece you've pointed out on ebay given I've got the mechanical know-how to do so.

Re: 82 shifter **** conversion

I got a Camaro shifter assembly from an 83 and the 82 firebird knight rider shift **** fits on it perfectly with no modification
