86 firebird dome light
86 firebird dome light
I picked up a 86 firebird couple of weeks and needed a new headliner. Just so happened to find one in a salvage yard in a 3rd gen camero. it fits pretty good for what I paid and I am happy with it. The only problem that I have and need help with is the hole for the dome light is twice as long as the original dome light. Can any suggest a good fix to this that looks clean??
thanks in advance.

Use the domelight from the junkyard car or one larger to cover the hole? Cover it with a bitchin' Slayer sticker? Make a filler from some scrap cardboard and headliner fur?

I'll second the use of the junk yard dome light. Although, the bitchin' Slayer sticker is not a bad plan B.

A Chevy Celebrity dome light will fit your firebird. Camaro to Firebird share a ton of parts. Things like the dome light are shared with several GM models. With something like a dome light, if you can figure out how to mount it, and splice two wires, nearly any domelight can be made to work.
If the domelight fit the Camaro, it'll definitely fit the Firebird.
Disclaimer: In the off chance you're dealing with an overhead console, the hard top and ttop versions are different. But still a hardtop Camaro and hardtop Firebird use the same parts.

Thanks for the info. Another question i have is about the sun visors. Mine are literally fallen apart and cant find any in the junkyard camero of firebird. Do you think i cam take them to a upholster shop and get them redone??
Re: 86 firebird dome light
You could, but they're easily done at home. Cut the stitching around the outside, and they open up like a taco shell. The shell is thin cardboard covered in headliner material. Replace the headliner material, and the cardboard if necessary, wrap em back around the core, and stitch em back up. Can even run em through a sewing machine if you're in a hurry.

More like heavy poster board. Inside there's a masonite or hardboard panel that holds the hardware and gives the visor it's body. That part seldom goes bad, but the outer shell takes a beating.
