Over head center console ideas
Going to put a t-tops overhead console in my hardtop 92 camaro, it's beat up so I'm gonna modernize it, any ideas for what I should do?

A great, and easy mod to do to these is to add a Home-link unit out of a Cadillac. It will take the space of the flashlight and is almost the same exact size and shape as it. Very easy to wire in too. Go to any decent local yard and you can find them for $5-10. Be sure to get one with a yellow light. The red units are older and do not work with most modern garage doors. The older units are still helpful for the wires and connector. They changed to those printed strips in the new cars.

how bad a difference? I've considered chopping the dome light out to mate it with my box one, maybe I could correct it there, I can't imagine there is much difference

It's not really worth messing with. They come in handy for holding up the headliner board, but the novelty wears off pretty quickly. I could never think of anything with enough utility to make it worth while.
The reminder wheels are just goofy. The added map light is alright, but if you have the later rear view mirror with map lights it's redundant. The switches always seem to be a bit sticky. The pouch elastic is usually blown out, so anything placed in the pouch flies in the back seat when the light turns green. The flashlight is just as useful as the rest, about like one of those keyring LED lights.

I wouldn't chop up an original for the reason you already mentioned - they're worth too much and getting harder to find, in addition to being a poor candidate for modification.
The elastic on the pouch can be replaced. It's just a generic black 1/4" elastic.
