steering wheel thickness

Hi again all!

So I am chatting with Chuck Pelton about getting my 3 spoke Firebird wheel redone. I want to make the outer ring a bit thicker but he said not a good idea, wont look right being the spokes are also wrapped. Any thoughts on this? Anyone do this to their wheel, if so:
1. how much thicker?
2. Any pics?

Thanks!

When the guy doing the custom work tells you it's a bad idea, perhaps its best to trusthis judgement.

I agree it will look weird. I would go with his recommendation.

I agree, as well. The only thing I might do, is go with a slightly thicker grade of leather. But, if the guy doing the work says it won't look right, I would completely trust his judgement.

Re: steering wheel thickness

I understand what you are all saying, But if its only 1/8" thicker? And if you follow through to the spokes I think it would like fine.

I seem to recall someone was doing re skinning these wheels and was able to make them a little thicker.

Re: steering wheel thickness

I found Dallas Steering will thicken these wheels up. For about 450. 1/4" thicker.

While back member Linson had this pic of an aftermarket wheel - thick grip! Lecarra MK8 spokes were powder coated black and he sprayed center cap bird by himself
Summit sells them around 170$ plus you need hub

See that is what I mean. Looks great! I am a big fan of the original leather 3 spoke factory wrap wheel myself. I am going to have Dallas Wheel redo mine. As soon as I am back to work. thanks for the info/pic Zman!

If they are able to carry the extra thickness into the spokes so it isn't a visible change, then I think it would be a nice upgrade. The stock leather wrapped wheels on the thirdgens are a bit thin for a performance car. Even my 99' SS could use a thicker wheel. Let us know how it works out.

Re: steering wheel thickness

yes, that is the concern I have about the spokes too. I will make it a point when I sent it in. Once I get it back I will absolutely submit pictures to this site for sure!

You must. My current build is an '89 GTA, and I was thinking I was going to have to go with a Momo, or Lecarra wheel. Lecarra makes a good looking 3-spoke, but I'm not so crazy about their Horn buttons.
I would like one in Ebony Corinthian leather.

I was looking into this same thing and discussed via email with Craft Customs. They get $299 to re-do a leather wheel and an extra $100 if you want to thicken the wheel up. So, $399 instead of $450 so something for you to consider: https://craftcustoms.com/photos-by-m...eering-wheels/

They do all kinds of steering wheel customization, including carbon fiber, different styles of stitching, etc. I've never used them so I can't vouch for the finished product but the pictures on their website look impressive.

Awesome! thanks for the info, I will reach out to them soon. I will be hopefully sending mine in next month. This Covid thing has me partially shut down work wise.
