Gear shift indicator?
Hey this is a quick question and relatively easy to answer:
In my '87 firebird, the gear shift **** never indicates what gear it's in, no arrow or whatever. The light underneath it shines fine, but doesn't move so I don't know if it's supposed to. I've gotten totally used to it but my father who drives it occasionally because he's helping me fix it up, can't stand it and almost puts the car in the wrong gear at the worst times. Is there supposed to be some kind of arrow that mechanically switches to tell you what gear you're in on the middle console?
If it's supposed to indicate somehow, how should I fix it?
To be honest I don't mind it at all and know what gear I'm in just from the amount of clicks from park or reverse, but in the fear that my dad's gonna put it in reverse at a stop light by accident and total my pride and joy, is there anything that can be fixed? If there was never any indicator to begin with I'm just gonna tell him to get used to it, I don't wanna pull up the whole console to mod it.
If there's something wrong with mine, it'd be great to show me how to fix it.
Cheers,

Re: Gear shift indicator?
The shift indicator was not added until 1991 I believe -- your car is correct for a 1987. Good photo of the later style here in this for sale thread: https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/fire...1-tran-am.html
