Haven't had the car that long, and don't use the ashtray under the radio other than to access the lighter to plug in a cell phone charger, but shouldn't the ashtray lid be "spring loaded?"
Currently, in order to open the lid I have to slide the little lock button with one hand, and push the lid down on the forward side to open it with the other hand. Seems to me it should not be a two-handed operation.
What's the fix?
Thanks!

Yes, it should be spring loaded. There are a couple of potential causes. Either the spring (or the arm on the door that the spring pushes on) has broken, or the little gear that slows it down has gummed up and isn't working any more. Remove the console shift plate and take a look under there.

Welcome to TGO!
Interesting
I just fixed mine last night, how this is designed I would imagine most would break similarly, I'll post pictures later to show how I fixed mine.

As it’s already been stated there’s a number of things that could broken, my problem was one side of the slot that the spring load pin rides in, I took a piece of banding material and cut it to the shape I needed, drilled hole and added a couple course thread screws, with a little adjusting and a little oil it works again.
