Oily residue on floorboard

Hey All,

I'm replacing the carpet in my 85 Z28 project car. There are two spots where that padding was glued down in the footwell area (driver's side and passenger side). That glue is emitting an oily residue. It's most notable in the area that looks brown (at the edge of the firewall pad). It's the same on both sides of the car. What is that? What should I do about it before putting the new carpet down? Thanks!

My guess is some oil from either windshield wipers or oil from engine snuck in behind firewall? What does it smell like?

I know that the heater core dumped some antifreeze into the passenger footwell but that doesn't explain the driver's side unless some got over there too. It's clear and has a sour smell.
