Best Headers on LT1

I was wondering on what are the best Long tubes that are already coated that will bolt up to an LT1 and also have no emission stuff. I am going to do custom dual exhaust that going to be side swept right before the rear tire I seen it done before. So help me out on getting my long tubes. The headers have to fit a 3rd gen though I working on getting all the parts for my LT1 swap.

Since you want a longtube you have two brand choices, Hooker and Hedman.

The hookers are offered in 1.75" primaries, im very sure their ports will swallow the LT1's D ports, just like SLP's do. The main downside is they hang LOW LOW.

The hedmans have a 1 5/8 primary, tuck up a LOT better than hookers, which is why I am likely to be running them soon, my last setup had SLP's, and since they only offer them coated now, and their coating is junk, I wont buy from them again. Another upside to the Hedmans is their normal thirdgen longtube is pn 68460 and they offere p/n 68469 for D port heads, so you shouldnt have to worry about the 1 5/8 not fully covering the port.

I'm running the Hedman shorties on mine with the d-ports, only thing I had to do with them is drill the holes and weld the O2 bungs in the headers since LT1's have two instead of one like the 3rd gens do. 1 5/8 primaries to 3" collectors. I also got the y-pipe that bolts directly up to their headers as well, dumped it into a 3" i-pipe all the way to the muffler, but since you are going to go with custom duals that is moot anyway.

I have the hedman part #68460. I have been searching but I can't seem to find the y-pipe that fits into the headers. Anyone know where I can find it?

thanks a lot

For the long tubes you will probably have to have a custom y-pipe made, I'm running the 68479 which are the shorties and Hedman makes a y-pipe that is a direct bolt on to them.

I guess hedman does not make a Y-pipe to fit the 68460 headers.

Run true duals by either dump it off a muffler of put a tips on it and angle it right before the rear tires.

Just run the Hedman LT's and have a custom y-pipe made up, or run the shorties and y-pipe and you can bolt up any aftermarket kit for the 3rd gens, just have to either put a cat on it or an off-road pipe in place of it like I did.

Now why is there a huge price diffrence between the hooker long tubes apposed to the headmans? Is it because of t he size diffrence with the primaries with hooker being a 1 3/4 and headman being 1 5/8?? Just wondering because if it's cheaper for a reason then I don't want to bother. Plus anyone got any good pics??? My car is in the middle of an Lt1 swap so im shopping for headers...long tubes of course and they are going to be non emmision headers......b/c ummm ya i dont have any

any particular reason? will they hit something? I also heard that a regular small block headers will work with an LT1, is this true?

Re: Best Headers on LT1

If you go with the Hedmans with d-ports for angle plugs you won't be sorry for it, easier to change the plugs and from what I've read they tuck up under the car better than the hookers

PM sent, long tubes on a stock motor is a waste, just go with the shorties and you'll like it better. The shorties use the factory locations for the y-pipe, everything is tucked up and out of the way.

Looks like Hedman discontinued the d-port long tubes

Re: Best Headers on LT1

The Hedman shorties are PN 68479 with 1 5/8 in primary, 3 in collector and 1/4 in thickness

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/HED-68479/

The matching y-pipe is PN 17478. 2.5 inch inlet/outlet with a slip fit.

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/HED-17478/

I wish they had a 3 inch y-pipe like the hooker 2055s.

Re: Best Headers on LT1

If you could get a pic of the clearance between the header and k-member, that would be great. I read that the driver's side header has to have a dent put in the header tube in order for it to fit. Did you run into this problem? Any issues w/ these being installed on a manual trans car that you know of?

i know this is old but having a hard time figuring out if 1 5/8 long tube headers are the right kind for my car? i thought that this will hinder your performance when you go above the 400 hp range? are the 1 3/4 the right one for people doing performance compared to leaving the lt1 stock?
