and no an LS7 head wont work on an LS1 based block (or ls2 for that matter). the bores arent big enough for the LS7 head to fit and the LS7 intake ports are different than the ls1 based intake ports.
FWIW, HPE (Horsepower Engineering, a sponsor of ls1tech.com) just put down 554rwhp with a cam/long tubes/cai LS7 with NO tuning. it put down 705rwhp with a 150 shot of nitrous still on the stock tune. they are waiting for the tuning software to be released and then all hell will break loose.
