Bought me an LT1 last night

I'm doing the LS1 swap but ran across a 97 LT1 with all accessories, computer and only 80,000 miles with the LT1 posi disc brake rear end for $ 600.00. I couldn't pass it up so I bought it, heard the motor run too and it sounds really good. Now I'm stuck, should I go in more debt and finish the LS1 swap with another 6 or 7 thousand or just throw a cam in this LT1 and bolt her in behind the T-56? I've allready bought and installed the LS1 mounts, done the fuel lines, pump, etc..

Your in Ooltewah? So am I. I'm doing a LT1 swap right now at southern university in collegedale...almost finished with it...just a couple little things. I'd put the LT1 in for now and maybe build up the LS1

Thats what I was thinking, it's going to be a while before the LS6 is finished. Nice to see another third gen owner from the area, I used to go to Ooltewah High School and graduated back in 2001 but now I live in Knoxville. I still own 10 acres of lakeside property in Ooltewah though. What's the trick to the motor mounts on this LT1? They look different on each side, one side has the clam shell and the other side has the actual mount on the block. I'm going to clean this motor up tonight and take all the B.S. EGR crap off. Will be ordering a cam too tomorrow.

The LT1 mounts completely different than an LS1. I'm a firm believer in the LT1 and prefer it to the LS1 due to the metal intake, reverse cooling, and more bolts per head. Plus when you make a powerful LT1 it's not as generic as an LS car (own personal opinion here). Indirocz28 traded off his third gen for a 4th gen with ported heads, a 230 236 duration 555 580 lift cam, 1.6 roller rockers, hooker long tubes, and dual 3in exhaust, the car made 358hp to the wheels at 5000rpm and 398 pounds of torque at 3500rpm. Proof enough for me that these LT's are potent little motors.

I just used my stock thirdgen motor mounts and they work fine. Lakeside property...very nice. I bought a comp cam 503 since we have emissions here now. Comp recommended that one so I could still pass easily. Need any help just let me know.

I forgot Hamilton County got emmisions, that sucks man. So far all we have is pricey wheel tax up here. I just figured out how the mounts are set-up, the stock LT1 mounts had me a little confused but some guys on LS1tech.com told me how it's done. I'm going to call comp cams hotline and talk to a tech about cam selection. Going to clean the motor up and polish the intake and heads tonight.

My 98 Z-28 has just a few bolt ons and it makes over 350hp without touching the heads or cam, I've got a TR 224 / 224 on a 112 LSA waiting to be installed and tuned. It's my daily driver though, LT1's make great low end torque unlike an LS1 which makes power on up in the powerband so this LT1 will have more usable power in the range I want.

Well dang its a small world. I've been to Ooltewah a few times to help Mliers work on his swap. I'll be movin to Nashville in a few months to start technical school. I highly recomend painless wiring for the swap. And don't cut any of your factory wiring harness out until the car runs. You won't need the LT1 mounts. Just bolt your factory clamshells to the LT1 block and use your factory mounts. I did my swap with the help of a friend, and now Im helpin mliers do his swap as much as I can. If you have any questions or need to know anything else about the swap just ask.

I saw you at the f-body gathering last month, that's a nice car you've got.

yes, but you have a cam and other extensive mods done. Mine is at the wheels BTW, I've owned and built quite a few LS1's. Most are between 305 and 325hp stock, let one breath and 350 hp isn't too hard to get. Once I get my cam in I'll be over 400 RWHP. Also, how in the hell do you get 27 mpg? Anyway

I got 22mpg with my untuned LT1 running pig rich with 3.70 gears. Buck on HPT gets almost 30mpg with SL0WLS1 on the highway with 4.56 gears putting down what he does at around 430 to the wheels. The big reason is the 6-speed in the car

Well I've got something to look forward to when I get this motor in the car, that's impressive gas mileage. My LS1 gets around 25 when I baby it.

Not to start a war here, as I absolutely loved my LT1 when I owned it, but, the LS1 engine aftermarket has been offering an aluminum intake for quite some time now. The reverse cooling doesn't really have "that" much of a benefit over the LS1's cooling system... and as far as having more bolts per head (for an adequate seal), I'd honestly rather have more bolts per "main" (for an indestructible bottom end).

Well, my Trans Am was a M6 and it didn't get that good of mileage, more around 25 or less. I'm not saying your full of it, if that's the mileage your getting then great. It's better to make power and save gas especially the way the gas prices are these days. Hopefully my LT1 and T-56 in the third gen will make that kind of mileage
