LT1 idle problems. Any ideas?
My bird has been possessed lately. It wants to idle poorly and tries to die at a stop. All sensors are new and fuel pressure is spot on. No funny noises and no exhaust leaks. No codes stored and no vacuum leaks. It acts just like a vacuum leak, but I can't find one. Anyone have any clue. I have almost completely stopped driving it because of this.

I'd clean and check your IAC motor and passage way and see if thers any carbon in there. Mine was dirty and that seemed to have fixed it.

IAC is new(1 week old) passage was cleaned and is spotless. The car acted the same with old IAC . It is also getting progressively harder to start.

I don't know, I got some things that come to mind. Look over the map sensor if its dirty. Check out the map sensor connector, plugs, plugwires, oil, compression??. If the map sensor wire connector is broken then zip-tie the connector to the map sensor so it doesn't move. The map sensor could still be bad if its clean.
I don't think the MAF or the O2's are it because it seems like you are saying it happens when you start it up and those sensors aren't used until it enters closed loop mode.
Maybe the coil. You can test that: http://shbox.com/1/coil_testing.jpg
Maybe the ICM is getting too hot or is bad. Here is the ICM cooling mod: http://shbox.com/1/4th_gen_tech2.html#ICM_cooling
I would check for leaky fuel injectors too and/or see if the fuel pressure drops too fast when you shut off the car. Or maybe even clogged injectors.

Re: LT1 idle problems. Any ideas?
MAP is new, so is the pigtail. MAP passage is clean. Coil is new and so is the ICM. I spaced the coil away from the head years ago. Injectors are new and so is the regulator, but...
I checked the fuel pressure today and it drops as soon as it primes. It doesn't do it every time. I am starting to think the check ball in the pump is sticking. It is the only part on the car that is old. It was put in in 2001 when I bought it. I am going to price a pump tomorrow. Does anyone know the Delco/Delphi number for a good pump? All this and I am getting rid of the car.

Don't spend the money on a Delphi pump, go ahead and buy a Walbro 255lph and all your problems may go away if it's a fuel problem.
Usually a drop on fuel pressure after a prime and the key turned off means a leaky injector

The reason I am suspecting the pump is because it does it with another set of injectors as well.

Check out all of the fuel lines too for leaks, i kind of doubt that would be it though. Walbro is awesome and might as well put one in. I think you can find them for $100. You can test for a leaky injector by taking off the fuel rail from the intake and turning the key to prime but don't turn over the engine. Then if you see any fuel leak out of the injectors, you got leaky injectors.

It has a Walbro 255 in it now. I will probably put a factory type pump in it since I am selling it. I am going to pull the rail tomorrow and check the injectors again.

Its a shot in the dark have you put a vaccuum gauge to it? There is the occasional intake leak from inside the engine in the oil valley that is caused by bad gaskets and/or milling of the heads.
Hate that your still dealing with this..

So do I. Vacuum guage reads steady. I don't remember what it was, but it was steady. I am tired of hunting for problems. I think the problem is somehow related to fuel. Pressure drops as soon as the pump stops running. I am pulling the rail tomorrow evening. The car sits more than I drive it. I am not spending another penny on it until I figure this out.

Re: LT1 idle problems. Any ideas?
Last night I pulled the rail and checked the injectors. No leaks anywhere. Fuel pressure was still dropping like before. I got to wondering if it could be my regulator(cheap adjustable crap). I pulled it off and I could blow through it. I know that isn't right. I put the stock one back on and It is holding pressure when it primes. I haven't had a chance to drive it yet. Here is my question. Would this cause it to idle weird? Could this also explain my occasional rich condition?
Re: LT1 idle problems. Any ideas?
I know the adjustable fuel pressure regs are known to cause problems and not be of any gain in the long run because the stock pcm will make adjustments because of different fuel pressure.
So, yeah, you may have it fixed now and it may have been causing those problems.

Glad to hear that's fixed, sorry to hear you are selling it.. but truth be told I am thinking of selling mine.. I don't think I could get what I want though, so probably keep it for another 26 years. Good luck!

I know I won't get my money back, but the knowledge I gained along the way is mine forever. I still have my old Ford to play with and I might find another toy someday. I am selling it to fund some travel to further my education. I have a degree in history and Spanish and I would like to use them.
