Need some help lq4 to lq9
I may be in the wrong place to ask this question but here goes. I am no engine expert by any means, i have an 03 chevy dually has the lq4 in it blew the engine and having to replace it. I know, or at least i think i know that the lq9 has more hp, i found lq9 out of 03 escalade can get total package with wiring and computer. Will i be helping things any by going to the lq9 im not so much worried about speed but i do alot of pulling just wondering what problems id have making the swap will everything bolt up, and will this engine work doing alot of pulling, i mean chevrolet had to opt to put the lower hp engine in the 3500 for some reason just nt sure what that reason may be... Thanks in advance for any help

We have a section for the LSx family swap. Since the info might be of use to those considering one of those engines in their 3rd gen, I'll let it live there.

Hell, it's just as easy to answer the question as to point him somewhere else...
Given that the LQ9 is from the same year vehicle, it should be just about the simplest swap possible (I'd think that you'd even be able to keep the same engine wiring harness that you already have).
The only notable difference between the 4 & the 9 is that the LQ9 has a slightly higher compression ratio (because different pistons were used). This means that you'll have a little bit more torque/hp, which will definitely help you with your towing duties. Aside from the pistons, EVERYTHING ELSE should be the same - the block, the heads, the bolt holes, the accessories, etc. (that's what I meant when I said the easiest swap possible). It shouldn't be much more than a simple R&R type operation, although for best results you WILL want to use the LQ9's computer.
Throw a set of decent headers on that puppy when you're done, as well as a high-flowing muffler, & you'll probably be up 40 or 50 hp from what you had with the LQ4!
(And yes, PerformanceTrucks.net is probably the best place to find answers for your truck...)
Good luck, & enjoy the newfound power when you're done!
