Pedal switches (?)

Hey guys, (just to make sure) which brake and/or clutch switches are you using?? I bought a brake switch from the "stealership" but after looking at it with the pedals, it's obvious that it's not the same thing as what our cars came with.

If the 3rdgen pieces work just like the 4thgen ones do, that'll make things go a little bit more easily...

Thanks guys.

Oh man, I can't believe that no one has an answer for this...

Re: Pedal switches (?)

I just used the stock thirdgen brake switch on the fourthgen pedals.. my setup is kindof stripped down so the only pedal related switches I have right now is the brake switch.. all else is programmed out. When I was running the auto I had a another switch for converter lockout, it was a stock switch that went "open" when the brake was pressed..

sorry can't help you more.

Re: Pedal switches (?)

Thanks for the answer, J.

Still wondering about this -

I don't yet have any switches for the clutch side of it, & I'm fairly sure that there should be at least one to work with cruise control and/or to serve a "neutral safety" function when starting...

Also, for the brake side of it, it seems like that would be needed in order to trigger the brake lamps, to pause/deactivate the cruise control, & I've got something vague that's just tickling the back of my brain hinting that it could have a minor effect on idle as well (maybe when the car's equipped w/ an auto & in gear?).

Anyone else? I'd really appreciate it if I could get a picture from someone who's already completed their swap - and IDEALLY get some suggestions as to where I could buy brand-new switches that would fit (haven't found any yet). Thanks guys.

Re: Pedal switches (?)

I'm running third gen pedals with the stock third gen brake light switch and thats it. The clutch anticipation switch is handy to have as it can be used for a multitude of different jobs ( like nitrous etc. ) and it does affect some smoothness but to be honest I've never really been bothered that its not there. I get a little spitting and coughing sometimes between shifts but its completely livable.

Re: Pedal switches (?)

Im running thirdgen pedals. Using stock brake switch, and the appropriate NSS switch that most thirdgens and all 4th gens use. I dont have a clutch anticipate switch...I notice zero drivability issues without it. I will probably pop one in if I ever wire up my 4th gen cruise control though. I guess at that point, Ill add a second brake light switch so it can be wired in with the clutch switch. Clutch in/Brake in kills the cruise. Other than that, i see no use for it.

Re: Pedal switches (?)

I'm running 4th gen pedals, I'm using the 3rd gen brake switch and the 4th gen clutch switch and made a connector to go from the 3rd gen clutch plug over to the 4th gen switch.

Remember, it's just not a clutch anticipate switch, but the clutch lockout to keep it from starting without the clutch pushed in.

I believe they are two different switches for two different operations are they not? The clutch "lockout" or neutral safety switch uses the same wires that the auto cars NSS uses. Yellow and Purple. To my knowledge, thats all that switch can do with the way its wired. Most auto thirdgens have the wires with plug already down in the kick panel. 87-02 switches were the same...and anything 86 and before used a different type with a different plug. I THINK...

But the anticipate switch goes on the top side of the pedal assembly, and is activated as SOON as the clutch pedal starts to move..much like the brake switches. Not when the pedal is to the floor, which is when the NSS switch gets tripped.

4th gen clutch pedals I used at first had 3 switches. I think it only had one brake switch. Since the thirdgen had vac operated cruise, the second brake switch had the vac line attachment. The 4th gen is all electric, so it only needs the one input switch. Im pretty sure my thirdgen pedals had holes for 4 switches...but its hard to recall.

I might have the pedal sets confused and mixed up. Im going purely off memory and since I mixed and matched parts from one set to the other during swap #2, its alittle hazy.

Re: Pedal switches (?)

Yeah, it's been a while since I looked at mine but I was thinking that both were on the same switch but may be different.

And my harness was wierd anyway, the GTA is an automatic car, but had the wires under the dash for the clutch switch.....now how odd is that?

Re: Pedal switches (?)

Its not odd at all. Those are the wires I was referring to. Both my 87 and 86 Trans AMs were auto cars. Both had the NSS wiring down under the dash for the clutch switch. However both plugs were also different. So I ended up cutting the 87 plug off and wiring it to the 86, so I could use the more common clutch switch.

Im wondering if the manual trans cars had the auto shifter NSS switch under the console???

The swap from auto to manual required nothing more than cutting out the auto shifter NSS wires, and installing the clutch switch to the wires under the dash. As far as the "no start without clutch" feature anyway...
