Identifing a lt1 or l99

I recently purchased what was supose to be a LT1 out of a 96 Camaro. From what I've read on other sites I think I may have been duped and bought a l99. The #'s on the rear ledge are 43006 and directley under that SGI. On the side of the block it's stamped 588. Can some one more knowlegable than I confirm this.

Thank You

I think you're right, L99 but I doubt it came from a Camaro.

That # 4.3 is what is on the back after SGI gives it away.

Re: Identifing a lt1 or l99

I bought the motor pretty cheap 600.00 complete with harness and computer so I'm not gonna cry over spilled milk. I'm currently running a 305 which is about to through a rod. But any way do you guy's think its better to run the l99 or rebuild the 305. Which will have more power?

Is the distributer buried under the harmonic balancer/water pump? If so it's an lt1.

Not that I'm trying to unsettle you or anything, but I wouldn't exactly call this spilled milk. You're getting screwed out of 85 cubes...if you paid for a 396 BBC would you accept a 305 SBC?

Yea I definatley got screwed but there is not much I can do about it. Acording to every one I spoke to it is a L99. I started a Pay Pal dispute I'll see were it goes and keep you guys posted. Hopefully some one will read this and be more knowledgable than I was and not get screwed .From every thing I learned the engines appear identical on the out side but displacement and the heades are differant

that doesn't work here. The L99 is externally identical to the LT1 except for the different casting marks

I thought the intake casting was differant.

Re: Identifing a lt1 or l99

Only thing besides the rear casting numbers that make it easily identifiable from the LT1 is the number on the passenger (I think) side of the block. The LT1 says 327 whereas the L99 says 588. The intakes are actually the exact same part number and are completely identical. Same with the water pump and opti. The accessory brackets are different but you have to remove the accessories and the bracket to see that.

The fuel rails are also different but will work if you absolutely have to. Thing is, if you connect them to an LT1 car fuel line, they will NEVER come off unless you cut them off. I made that mistake on my old car.

That's what I would have thought because they fit together just fine. According to the guy that bought my car theres some special lip inside that won't let them comeback apart after they are assembled. Just going by what I was told and decided to error on the safe side.
