Confussed on what to do????

Hey guys for some that dont know i bought a LT1 motor from a 96 impalla ss. It came with a cold air intake and looks to be some newer gaskets. What i am confussed about is what i should do! I want a fast car where most of the imports wont keep up. But then theirs the money issuie. Then i could do just headers exsausht, 3000 stall, and a bigger cam. I am a junior in high school and my parents dont pay for nothing. I do track and football and they are both starting up where i cant work as much. So should i just try and stick it in or should i just save untill its already? Then the other thing is gas millage? SHould i sell it and get like a older 600cc bike? If i do just stick it in it comes with 260hp+bigger cam+headers, exsahust+cold air intake+a/c delete and emmisions gone. How much hp do you think i will be at? Think i will be over 300hp and 250rwhp? Will that beat very many cars?
thanks
kevin

Re: Confussed on what to do????

i prefer staying with the same type engine so that you dont have to mess with everything. but is you have to do a swap go with the ls, the lt was half a job, that is why they dumped it and went with the ls.
you can get 400 hp out of a stock ls and better gas mileage too, if you just have to have an ugly aluminum engine.
there is just something about an engine with a coil over each cylinder and have to cover it with plastic cause its so ugly.

Next, we'll discuss capitalization, punctuation, abbreviation, and of course, review spelling. . .

It's really your call. The stock LT1 will be an up-tick in power while maintaining decent economy (but economy will be no match for a bike). You never mentioned what transmission you plan on using, I assume your 3rd gen tranny.

How much power increase you'd have with cam, etc., depends upon which cam you use. 300+ is pretty much a piece of cake.

Re: Confussed on what to do????

Ok I would like to go with a big cam but then i would have to tune the computer and thats alot of money. So the cam size would be around the crane 227 or alittle bigger. My trans is a 700r4 with high performance shift kit w/ corvette servo. Then i have a 10 bolt with 3:73s. I think if i did drop it in like that i would be able to take on a few cars? mabey like the new GTs and take some of the imports?

Re: Confussed on what to do????

If money is tight I would just do the headders, stall, cam if you allready have them or the money saved up. Or I belive some have stock LT1's in there 3rd gen and run pretty good.
You can allways save up and do the h/c swap later on down the road.

Well since you live in Ohio you will only have a select amount of time to drive the Camaro or ride a bike. How much do you love your third gen?

Re: Confussed on what to do????

I want to put the motor in really bad!!! But eveyone wants 1800 bucks just to do a rebuild. Then it will be around another 800 just to install it. Then i thought i can buy a nice used bike for 2500.

D O N O T S E L L Y O U R C A M A R O ! ! !

YOU WILL TOTALLY REGRET THAT BY THE NEXT MORNING!! You don't have a friend with a cherry picker to drop the motor youself? And 1800 for a rebuild sounds right, but why not take time and just rebuild it yourself, you don't need an engine stand, just use an old tire... LOL (originally from the sticks of Nebraska so I "FIND" ways of doing things)....... What does it need to be rebuilt for?

Re: Confussed on what to do????

I dont think it needs nothing. The cheapest i found was these people that would take .30 over or what ever i wanted and put in what ever cam i want for 1800. He said that a 3000 stall would be alittle big and said that getting the wiring and everything hooked up might even go up to 1500 bucks. I thought the 1800 was good but still alot to save up with me doing football and track. I dont think i will ever sell my camaro unless someone makes a great trade or a offer i cant refuse lol.

Re: Confussed on what to do????

idk if your intrested in an ls1 swap or not, but honestly, i would either save up and do an lsx swap, or keep on saving. when you rush things, it wont come out how you want and you will end up running out of money. would you be interested in a ls1 by chance? pm me if you are interested. i've got a ls1 and 4l60e pullout right now for $1500.

Re: Confussed on what to do????

If money is tight and you're not going to have lots of time to work on it - enjoy driving your Camaro until you have enough funds and time to knock the project out. Spend the time you do have reading up on what's necessary for the swap.

If I was in your shoes in HS still, I'd be dying to do the swap. Save the funds and collect the parts - and you can knock this out in a week.

Re: Confussed on what to do????

Is your 305 blown up? If not then maybe you should familiarize yourself with the 305 and engine work in general, and then when ready, drop your LT1 in. That way you will save a buttload in labor and have the satisfaction of knowing it was done right. And..yes I know you want it now, but its give and take. Take being the money you shell out.

Re: Confussed on what to do????

If you are itching for something to do, you could put long-tube headers and the rest of the exhaust on your 305 setup since LT1's use the same headers. Recommend coated ones and 1 3/4 primaries. It would give you something to do and educate yourself a little bit until you figure out what you want to do. Might be a bad suggestion though because I don't know how difficult longtubes are to put in. I got shorty headers which will be replaced by longtubes.

Most 4thGen guys will say 3500 stall or more.
