How big a cowl hood needed?

For those that have completed the swap. I have a Victor jr. and a 1" nitrous plate, was wondering how tall the cowl would need to be to clear the carb? I had a 6" cowl last time and didn't want to try to drive it on the street.

i'd imagine 2" with the proper drop base air cleaner would fit. I have a 4" and fit a 6" tall air cleaner with a drop base. So take that for what it's worth. personally I'd measure your setup and decide for yourself.

i have an ss hood and i cant run an air cleaner with a victor jr and a nitrous plate.
i now have a super victor and cant even run my plate.
ss hood isnt quite 2", but beware. dont know if 2 would get it done.
very close. tough call.

Thanks for the replies. Just trying to get an idea from those who already have theirs together. I would like to use the shortest hood possible. I like the looks of the big cowls but the function leaves alot to be desired.

how tall is the average carb and air filter? I have the efi victor manifold with a intake elbow thats 6.5-7 inches taller and I needed a 4" to clear. Leaves about an inch of clearance underneath it so possible a 3" cowl would have cleared.

i had a 383 in the car with a victor jr, carb and a FOUR inch drop base setup.
with the ls1 and a victor jr, i had to run a 3" filter. with a nitrous plate and a hvh spacer, air cleaner wouldnt even think about fitting.
ls motor is a lil taller.

Re: How big a cowl hood needed?

that's weird, my motor must be lower in the chassis because i have a 6" drop base air cleaner, vic jr, performer rpm nitrous plate and a 950 carb under my hood with about 1/4" gap under my glasstek 4" cowl

xpndbl3, do you have any pics of you carb setup? Just curious what a 6" drop air cleaner looks like. Do you have any interferance issues with the linkage or solenoids?

Re: How big a cowl hood needed?

the drop base is the same from a 3" drop base to the 6" drop base, it's just the filter that changes height the base is the same part.

crappy cell phone pic but it should show you what it looks like.
