lt-1 questions

ok first off I did try searching but I couldn't find the answers I was looking for I'm sure it's here but I wasn't able to find it

I understand that the lt1 is the same as the l98 except for the heads and intake (please correct me if I'm wrong)

so there seems to be some issues with mounting the a/c with it hitting the crossmember and there seems to be some issues with power steering lines I haven't found the whole problem completely. So my question is could you just use l98 accessories or even the tbi motor accessories? It seems like a simple enough solution but I have never heard of it so I'm wondering if there is a reason why it won't work

my second question is I could have swore I saw on here a guy who swapped in an lt1 and used l98 sensors, harness and ecm but I can't seems to find it maybe I was dreaming if it is possible I would like some more details on it. Thanks in advance

Google LT1, theres a ton more differences than that. SBC is GEN I, LT1 is GEN II

No, some head and block mounts may line up, but positions, and lack of a water pump pulley really muck up the job. LTx stuff is cheap, use those

lt1 and used l98 sensors, harness and ecm
He drilled a hole in the intake for a TPI distributor and ran LTx everything else. From a swap point of view, its a cheap engine that outflows the TPI. From an ECM standpoint, its kind of backwards as the TPI ECMs are about as powerful as old school Nintendos. Newer engines come with newer, more powerful, more efficient, easier to tune PCMs. How to install them properly is well covered. Use them

Re: lt-1 questions

Thank you for the response, I was worried that this question was so stupid nobody was gonna answer. I knew that they considered the ltx series engines gen II but I had heard that the main differences were the heads and intake so thank you for the clarification. I figured there would be some issues with the accessories or everybody would be doing it but I thought I would ask as I would already have the accessories. but your response leaves me with more questions.

first I was looking at getting a caprice lt1 as they seem to be cheaper (due to iron heads I'm assuming) so would that a/c compressor and power steering pump work without having to make big changes (mainly crossmember)

and second I'm sure the TPI ecms are a joke nowadays compared to ltx or lsx ecms or I guess they called them pcms. But my question is, is the only disadvantage to using a TPI ecm that they are harder to program or does the underpowered ecm affect other things.

again thanks for your response

Re: lt-1 questions

B-body and F-body accessories are very similar, from a swap perspective you wont see much difference. Get whatevers cheapest, but get the complete set

Head material isnt a huge deal unless you are counting pounds. Power levels are roughly the same

You listed the main weaknesses of the TPI ECMs. If you dont have a 90-92 TPI setup I wouldnt even attempt the swap as older TPIs have quite a few extras the LT1 wont. You still have to get the intake drilled accurately

Using the old ECM is still a bad choice. Bbody's are popping up in yards everywhere so finding a harness/PCM isnt hard or expensive. LT1 tuning isnt very expensive either, esp for a stockish swap. Those will stick to the common swap things like !VATS, !rear 02s, !AC, etc. To get the TPI ECM to run the new engine, a new very specific tune will have to be burned

Re: lt-1 questions

Google different types of LT1/LT4 engines on ebay and check out how they are confrigured according to the accessory bracket. Corvettes mount the accessories on the driver side where as camaros/firebirds mount them on the passanger side. Depending on where the compressor for you A/C would fit best will help you decide on what bracket to choose. You can also purchase relocation brackets from aftermarket vendors, check out LTxtech.com. As for your power stearing pump, the hardest part is figuring out where YOU want the resvoir to be. After mounting it you can get custom lines made up from a hydrolic hose company near you for under $100. If your interested in seeing any pics I have PM me and I'll be glad to help you out any way i can.

Re: lt-1 questions

I would love to see pictures of your motor swaps I am a few years off but I believe I found a lt1 6 speed transmission (which from my understanding will bolt to any 1st gen block but can be converted to ls1 block by changing the input shaft) but personally I would like to do a lt1 swap anyway because from my understanding they mount in the car the same and exhaust is a lot simpler to figure out, also it seems that the lt1 is not far off on horsepower and has more torque (which is the seat of the pants feel)

If I am wrong please let me know you guys are great here

Re: lt-1 questions

If you can afford the LSx swap, go that route. Mounts are the least of your worries in a swap

The LT1 trumps the TPI in just about every aspect, LSx engines do the same to LTx

LT1 exhaust is the same as any SBC in a 3rd gen now. Use atleast 1 5/8" primaries on your headers and there wont be an issue

Re: lt-1 questions

Stock L98 accessories brackets interfere with the water pump. You really have to hack the **** out of it to work.(I had to do it to use as a brace for my supercharger bracket.

Im the guy who retained all my Stock '92 harness/ecm ONLY because Im running a SC setup and wanted to run the $59 sy/ty code. Eventually I'll put a turbo setup back on the car.

I drilled the intake and dropped in a MSD distrib. I also welded the timing cover up and got rid of the opti spark and water pump shaft hole. Went with a electric water pump.

Re: lt-1 questions

is there somewhere on here that gives more of "step by step directions" to install an lt1 intake on a SBC TPI?

Re: lt-1 questions

I don't believe this is a real easy thing to do. There used to be a guy that sold these but I see his site is shut down now. But if I remember right they don't line up with gen 1 heads and you have to rework that and I don't believe the mount holes line up also the distributor as mentioned above has to moved to the back. The guy who put these on TPI cars used to be on this board but I don't remember who he is but hopefully he can chime in
