Re: 90 firebird formula merges with LQ4 ( questions!!! )

I think the stock crank will hold up to some boost, 20 psi....I'm not sure about that much, but there's guys running around with close to 1000hp with the stock crank.

Re: 90 firebird formula merges with LQ4 ( questions!!! )

Probably so, but if you are putting all of that money into a new engine, why not buy a new forged crank that will take whatever you throw at it!?! Then you don't have to worry about it. Just my

Re: 90 firebird formula merges with LQ4 ( questions!!! )

so i realized the head gaskets i got were knock offs, and they DO NOT WORK! the metal tab that holds the gasket material together is hitting the deck surface, so i am gonna either go with 243's or 317's so idk yet kinda tryin to figure that out. the reason i am gonna switch heads is cause a header bolt is broke off in the head. ( i am lazy and do not feel like paying to have it takin care of)

Re: 90 firebird formula merges with LQ4 ( questions!!! )

When you put the motor in for the final time make sure your torque arm mount is bolted to the trans, and that it is properly assembled. Because those gigantic bolts have zero room in the trans tunnel.

I made this mistake when I put my trans in.

They aren't meant to take stress sideways. Especially with a long headbolt.

if you've got a 6.0, grab yourself a couple of 12610046 gaskets; they're $30 each, hard to beat and they're MLS

I thought that was the VSS buffer box. The VATS is on the driver side?

Re: 90 firebird formula merges with LQ4 ( questions!!! )

so, im sitting here thinking, bout my car, and what all i would love to do to it. My first idea is to get it running, and break it all in, then drop a cam, and heads on it. maybe just do bolt ons, like underdrive pulley, intake, maf, injectors, throttle body and all that jazz so that is where i am at as of now.

Re: 90 firebird formula merges with LQ4 ( questions!!! )

Like Five7 said the Starter/VATS relay is under the driver side kick panel, and the VATS control box is in the center of the dash behind all the ducting and is only accessible with the dash pulled. The little yellow box you are referring to is the VSS buffer box which will be wired around.

I just pulled my dash harness and removed everything that would be useless beyond this point, including those two boxes.

So you just dropped the engine into the car but now you're selling the engine and transmission?

I would recommend that if your capable of doing so, I wished I had built my own once everything was said and done...

so i was working on putting the front end back on tonight. gonna put the hood on and all that jazz, but last time i put it on it was way outta wack so hopefully i can adjust it this time. but all i really need to get for now is headers, harness, knock sensors, cam sensor, oil pressure sensor, tranny crossmember, and ill be satisfied for now at least. my main concern is gettin the harness back from pocket, and getting him paid up

Hello, I am putting together a list of the LS and LT swaps here on TGO so that others can find answers to their questions a bit easier. This is a great swap thread, it should be on the list. If you will let me add this, please paste it in a reply at this thread: https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/ltx-...ltx-swaps.html and I'll add it to the main list.

Re: 90 firebird formula merges with LQ4 ( questions!!! )

well im kinda stuck,....... i got almost all the interior put in put i was tinkering around and notice that if you have the cable coninected to the shifter that goes to the steering column, connected it will not budge take that one off and it now moves,...... why is that? could it be a faulty cable? could it be a faulty switch not allowing any movement? idk let me no your ideas

That is so you cant shift the car out of park without the key turned in the cylinder

No, its mechanical. With the cable unhooked from the shifter does it pull in/out when you turn the key? If not then something is wrong at the ignition switch.

I seem to remember you disconnected the ignition switch? Could be another thread I am thinking of

when i turn the key, it seems dead. to be honest no springback action at all just forward, makes no movement at all. so maybe the switch is where i messed up,......................

You did remove/move the ignition switch? Did you put the rod back into the hole on the side properly? I think the cable is something that cant be messed up?
I am not real familiar with them as I am always just removing them to discard. I converted both my F-bodies to manual transmission and the other columns I have ever gotten I throw that cable away since I only drive manual transmission.

i did remove it yeah, i had bought this car as just a shell. and i had a parts 89 formula 350 that was rusting out. so i swapped everything over and i did take that apart yes. no i put the rod in but i think i may have twisted it a lil. if i go to manual all i need is that switch but for a manual right?

I dont understand your question, sorry.

If you have a manual transmission that cable is not necessary, but the ignition switch is the same for manual and auto and came in a LOT of GM vehicles. Same switch in my 71 and 73 Camaro's
