Re: 90 firebird formula merges with LQ4 ( questions!!! )
Well, I ordered the lsx mounts from Spohn, gotta wait tili got the money then ill get the suspension parts, shocks, struts, caster/camber plates, springs, sway bars, wonderbar, steering components, lca's(for the rear), panhard bar, and the relocated torque arm ( Good idea? or stick with that tail shaft mount?)
Pocket:
Because it is outta a old ford f-150, and i believe it is the front diff, but it is about the same width as the thirdgen, but the pumkin (center section) sit off to the right like 10 inchs so ill have to have it retubed which in my opinion isnt bad, idc ill send a FREE housing i got from a frnd in and have currie do some work to it, brackets, tubing, BLAH, then get it springs lcas, panhard and i am set so i dont think it is to bad considering gettin a new one is really expensive and the 10 bolt is $hlt so dont wanna take my chances. I like to hotrod when i can so i want everything to be solid. the motor, trans, rearend, brakes, suspension, everything so i am gonna try my best and make sure i take all neccesary precautions. i dont wanna get the car running be like woot! then go hammer it and the rear end fall out from under the car! I dont trust my welding skills as a 19 yearold to take the abuse of engine that is going to put out 450 horses so i dont wanna risk it. I just want to get it dont and get it done right not throw away money that i would put toward this later anyways so i figure heck why not. Thanks for the imput though pocket that is just how i feel bout it. BTW your car turned out real nice, you got any other updates? on that bad boy

Re: 90 firebird formula merges with LQ4 ( questions!!! )
Use a rubber trans mount regardless of application. TA on the crossmember or on the tailshaft is up to you. If youve got enough power to fold up the stock TA, then its time to hardmount the front of it to the crossmember or the chassis. Until then, rock the stuff
Updates on my 92? Well, if you gap your plugs at .040" (stock specs) then youll have an annoying stumble at idle. Regapping them to .050" like the LS1 guys do will result in lots and lots of misfires at low RPMs and even worse at higher RPMs. So Im back to .040" and dealing with my slight stumble. Whatever you gap your plugs at, get your tune there or prepare to do it twice. Heater core likes dripping on my carpet, so its scheduled for next weekend. Definitely not looking forward to pulling the dash. Gas mileage is starting to go back up as the newness factor wears off and Im not hotrodding it everywhere as much. I scored a power bulge hood so Ill be rocking that at AF in a few weeks. I got the cruise working finally. Nothing was wrong with my wiring, just the brake switch wasnt pushed in enough to engage the plunger. Not much else to report

Re: 90 firebird formula merges with LQ4 ( questions!!! )
well well sounds like a couple isues but nothing get down about, i wish that is all i had to do, to have a ls1 in my car lol but yea i no time and pateince i am taking my time with this thing. I love working on it, it just gets annoying when i got nothing to report of talk to you guys bout for a month or so lol so yea ill be picking up another job here soon to pick up the slack and get this bad boy done faster! but yea the thing i am most concerned bout in my swap is the harness. i thing i might buy one from hawks, but i dont no do they make it work with the stock gauges and what not? idk maybe i should ask but yea im not even to that point and it is annoying cause i no i need to get the suspension and brakes done then worry bout that main obbjective but yea work in progress still tryin to pick a color found a pretty cool looking red, but i am thinking more along the lines of charcoal grey, white, black so idk still in the air. but yea,.......

k, well that is sick would you need a harness? or do you make them outright then i pay for it, let me no how you do it and i will get one from ya when i am ready for it, but here are some pics of the rearend and stuff
By the way, it is for sale do not need it and would like for it to be gone comes as is only thing is without sway bar. has one rim on it, lug nut rounded off and cant get it off. well i cant anyways, but offer me local pickup only. 2:73's? and it is an open rear from the original owner told me.

Re: 90 firebird formula merges with LQ4 ( questions!!! )
Id need a harness from your year car. Engine type is irrelevant. TPI, TBI, V6 any will work, just match the trans type to what you had
Id also need a LSx harness, car, truck whatever
Damaged harnesses are also fine, every single wire will be retraced. Just dont buy a harness that was removed with pruning shears

Re: 90 firebird formula merges with LQ4 ( questions!!! )
k so i got no updates on the 90 formula, but i needed to get my daily driver in good running condition and looking pretty so i cleaned her up and replaced the dizzy cap, rotor, ignition module, ignition control, and wires. Today was so nice out, i took my time and pulled valve covers, chevked everything and routed the new moroso wires ( got them off ebay for 30$, the best 30$ i have ever spent on wires, the seller name is kjperformance just incase any of your guys gonna get new ones) under the headers, and that was a frst for me never did it cause i didnt wanna take the time. but the after results were awesome so much cleaner looking so here is a pick of her junk so, yea but ill let ya gus no when i get the fuel tank out and when i start yanking the dash or whats left of it lol!
ENJOY! let me no what ya think, B/A? lol

well since i am starting this build literally on scratch. like no tools, nothing, so,.... here i thought i would have all this stuff done. I am 19 working, and trying to build my dream. so,.... i have been spending money on tools needed to get this car going. So sorry for no updates, i have been cleaning up the headlight wireing and re-wirelooming it. um looking for a welder, to patch floors. i drove to indiana to pick up some 16x6 00 firebird rims so i paid 100 so i figured it was worth it. but yea i will let ya no when i get the rearend sent off and get the springs, and suspension components so untill then

Airbag inertia sensor
Another one behind the radio and under the shifter plate. Main control module is near the ECM
For future reference, whenever you see yellow loom/tape/connectors its airbag stuff regardless of what car its on

Bulky any intrusive they are, but a great face saver. My best friend ate his steering wheel a few years ago and will never be the same. An airbag, even if it doesnt deploy would have kept his lower jaw from being demolished
Just my
Oh, most insurance companies give airbag cars a 9% discount on rates and removing the system can void coverage. Check it out before you toss it

Re: 90 firebird formula merges with LQ4 ( questions!!! )
K,.... Well this build will prolly be off the charts for a lil bit. Some bad news has come up, and I am moving back to my home town. My older bro commited suicide, so ls1/t56 swap has been put on a hanger so to speak.Mom and dad wanted me back home to help out and so my sis and younger bro dont do anything stupid. So i am back in geneseo, Il, dealing with alot of emotions, and my 89 formula is with me. So i am company,.... some what but i had some thought on the ls1. I am thinking carbed ls1,..... now if i go this route here are a couple questions, if i go with carb, could i buy a ls1 engine harness, and have (pocket) get rid of all the fuel injections stuff, and would it run? Now,.... if i were to go with the edelbrock intake and controller kit would i have to have the ls1 engine harness ( or the computer )? and ideas or thoughts would be nice,.... Now that i am outta work, and living at home somethings to think bout would be nice. What do you guys think bout the distributer? set up for the ls1 carb? if i went that route could i keep the stock harness from the 89 formula to send signal to start it and all that jazz? idk just thinking,....
The 90 is gonna stay in springfield for a lil bit till i get somewhere. But so far this is my current plan, Ls1 block cleaned, new crank, ( maybe 383 kit ) forged rods, forged pistons, the heads will be ls6 heads, milled, and ported with new valves, and beefer springs, the cam.... i am unsure at this point i want something aggresive, real nice loupy idle but something that will smooth out at wot, the carb 750cfm?, t56 trans, prolly aluminum flywheel, and others stuff. I am looking for a subframe kit, to stiffin the unibody up i heard bout a bolt in kit if anyone knows where i could look i would appreciate it. the rear end is still waiting for me to make up my mind. I am gonna go with 3:55 gears not to high not to low, but i am unsure bout the spool? where the ring gear bolts to? what do you guys think let me no,... color i have found,... it is bright aqua metallic, so i am excited bout the car. I love being home, but i wish it was on better circumstances but yea.

Re: 90 firebird formula merges with LQ4 ( questions!!! )
Family first. Car projects come second to life in general
I wouldnt carb the LSx, but if you must there are two routes. The controller box using the LSx individual coils and the GMPP front cover and a ford dist. Neither require a LSx PCM or even the main harness. Just cut down the 3rd gen engine harness as seen in the prep thread and attach the controller box, or hook the distributor up directly
Refer to LS1tech about specifics about carb choice. Quite a registry there. The majority of the LSx swaps on this forum are EFI
Be sure the flywheel you use is either stock or SFI approved. Watch the black TA clutch explosion video if you are wondering why. I personally dont think the possibility of losing my feet is worth the rotating mass reduction with an aluminum flywheel
SFCs will help the car even if you had a V6 in there. Regardless of the type of SFCs you get, Id suggest welding them in. Bolt in kits are great, but over time the bolt holes elongate so their effectiveness dwindles. The good news is bolt in kits usually have more mounting points than normal weld in kits, so welding them in stiffens the chassis even further
T56's like lower gears. Go 3.73 or 4.10 with a 10 bolt or similar ratios for 9 bolt and aftermarkets

Re: 90 firebird formula merges with LQ4 ( questions!!! )
k i like the suggestions, i had heard some stuff bout aluminum flywheels, and was iffy bout it myself so i thought i would mention it. but i like the idea of a crabed ls1 and if i go with a carbed setup that means later down the road i can save up money and get afr heads, intake, cam pretty much all the stuff i need to get a fuel injected ls1 get what i am saying? not only can i get the lsx in there faster but i can get my head around both parts to see which i will like better, not gonna lie i will prolly enjoy the sound of a carbed lsx but the fuelies are so much more dependent, imo but thank you pocket, and yes family come first. So ill will let you guys no when everything starts to fan out. I am currently looking for a house in geneseo, wife stayed in springfield, and i am up here looking for work and ext. So we can sell the house, and since my wife is disabled we will be able to get a grant for use to either buy ahouse, or build. So the money we get from selling the house we get, will go straight into the car woot, but yea
Re: 90 firebird formula merges with LQ4 ( questions!!! )
Carbing a LSx is generally more expensive than retaining EFI because everything must be purchased aftermarket. Intake, controller box, front cover etc
EFI parts are common and dirt cheap (comparatively). Since you're starting with a long block, the cost to put either on top will be similar in the end

lsx fast intake, is 900 plus 500 for the throttle body, so that is 1400. Edelbrock intake 300, carb 500, front dizzy kit for like 450.so that is a savings of 200 already. The injectors, ecm wireing harness, tune dyno run. so i think i might be a lil cheaper then fuely. maybe at least 1 grand. But yea i guess we will see

Re: 90 firebird formula merges with LQ4 ( questions!!! )
so here is the update gents. I am now not parting out the 89. I found a 91 formula that needs a new shell,... and it is a good price. So,... i have a pic of it, and will put it up. Now for the ls1 parts list,... I have got it all figured out.
Trying to get this done and make the most power i can with stock internals so here we go.
Crank: stock
Pistons:Mahle two valve release flat tops
Rods:stock
Heads:241 castings, ported and milled
Cam:either going to be comp cams, or gmp hot cam kit.
Intake:ls6/fast
Throttle body:stock ported throttle body
Injectors:36lb
oil pump:ls6 oil pump
coils:stock
Headers: Hawks thirdgen swap headers with a custom y pipe
valve covers: aluminum fab
rocker arms: harland or summit 1:7
trans: th350/ t56
rearend: stock 10 bolt till i can get the for 9 built.

Re: 90 firebird formula merges with LQ4 ( questions!!! )
Im going carb. ls1/built 700r4 and then the ford 9inch. cause i dont feel like spending 1500 on a t56 so it can wait. i can atleast get the motor in and running.

Re: 90 firebird formula merges with LQ4 ( questions!!! )
So,... here i am thinking,... i have a shop now. lift,.... room,.... and income. LETS GET THIS ***** ON!!! so i am gonna do a stock build. figured the numbers from a stock ls1 are good enough for a lil bit. then ill upgrade once i get every kink sorted out. so,.... in a couple weeks ill have room in the shop for both the donor car and the lsx swaping car. make over! so far build sheet includes stock internals ported 806 heads, summit rocker arms, ls1 intake, gmp hot cam kit ls6 springs and hawks LT's ith a ford 9 out back. all new paint, cleaned and renewed interior. stiffing, roll cage, subframe connectors. so when i get the cars in the shope i WILL post pics. ( I had to port my heads myself, no machine shop locally has a setup/program for the ls1's yet,.... LAME!)

Re: 90 firebird formula merges with LQ4 ( questions!!! )
ok,.. so here is the recent. I found a ls1 intake with rails and map sensor and bolts for 100, then a trailblazer ss cam with springs, and push rods for 75. the i am gettin a crank from a gent on here for 100. so the motor is almost complete. now all i need is the accesories, valve covers, rocker, coils, and header. then i should be set at least to get it test fitted in the car. but until i get the stuff ill be waiting

Re: 90 firebird formula merges with LQ4 ( questions!!! )
So i dropped the ls1 and heads for it to be cleaned and new cam bearings installed. Next is tomorow morn, i am driving to get a ls1 intake i found on craigslist for 100 with fuel rails injectors hardware map sensor, and of course intake. so I also found ls1 motor mounts on ebay for 60$ used with all harware and the stands from 98-02 trans am so that takes that small thing outta the way. I am gettin excited bout this ss trailblazer cam so woot! Later down the road when not under budget i will replace heads cam and intake. so....... i am tryin to get most outta what i got so woot. Picking up block sometime next week. so

Re: 90 firebird formula merges with LQ4 ( questions!!! )
TB SS will be GEN IV. You need the newer timing set with the timing cover mounted cam sensor and lengthen the cam connector pigtail from the rear china wall to the front cover
