Re: 90 firebird formula merges with LQ4 ( questions!!! )

GEN IV LSx engines moved a few sensors around. If youll compare your stock cam, theres a toothed ring at the rear. The TBSS cam is smooth in that spot, those moved the sensor to the timing cover. Im pretty sure they did that to allow VVT engines to use the same setup (cutting costs). A new timing set is pretty standard for cam swaps and a front cover is usually under $50. Not a huge setback

Re: 90 firebird formula merges with LQ4 ( questions!!! )

yea the only thing is i heard after i bought it that the stock cam that came in the 98 ls1 is better then it. but i have looked up the numbers and the ls2 tb made 390 and the ls1 made 325 so i think that cam was worth it. cam with ls6 valve springs and pushrods so i cant complain. now all i need is my accesories, oil pan, pick up tube, coil packs, valve cover and ext you get the point but i am on my way!! Here are some pics of what i slowley did to the 90 firebird. got the old dash out. gonna patch floors and get the interior from the 89 in. Now tomorow i get my block so i am going to test fit it all. so! here we go enjoy!

Re: 90 firebird formula merges with LQ4 ( questions!!! )

Thats the one. Check on tech for a cheaper price used. I can extend the cam wires for you no problem

Dont forget the LS2 timing set which most people upgrade to even when not using the newer cam

Re: 90 firebird formula merges with LQ4 ( questions!!! )

tell me what you guys think bout this. the 5.3 862 castings are a smaller combustion chamber therefor creating higher compression. if i port them out they will just as much but have more compression. what catings should i go with?

Re: 90 firebird formula merges with LQ4 ( questions!!! )

To use an LT1 T56 on an LSX engine you have to swap out not only the bellhousing but also the input shaft. If you were still planning on using the LQ4 crank, then you would only have to swap the bellhousing and could leave the input shaft alone. I think the LS1 T56's are a bit stronger anyway so that would help you out a small bit.

Re: 90 firebird formula merges with LQ4 ( questions!!! )

So i was thinking. I got fourth gen wheels. I need a rear that can handle the ls1. So why not get a fourth gen rear? So i found one with 3:73's already in it, for 225. I am gonna go pick it up

Dont abuse it and the 10 bolt will live just fine behind the 6.0. Your 700R4 will likely die first

Re: 90 firebird formula merges with LQ4 ( questions!!! )

To use the plastic tank you have to swap the fuel sender for a 90ohm unit, change/lengthen the fuel line fittings and trim the filler neck. V6 versions had the regulator on the rail, LS1s in the tank, so find out which you have

To use the 3rd gen tank you need a new pump

Re: 90 firebird formula merges with LQ4 ( questions!!! )

The LS1 tank is a bit lighter considering that it is made of plastic. Several members here have successfully been able to use it for their swaps. I'm not sure if anyone has actually been successful at getting the 4th Gen Evap system to work properly yet, but that is yet to be determined. If it were me doing your swap (I am doing one of my own), I would use the 4th Gen tank. They are relatively cheap, and the weight reduction alone (Even though I don't believe its significant) should make it worthwhile. The people that have run 4th Gen tanks merely run a T-connector either just before, or just after the filter, and run the return back to the tank. I believe, based on some drawings I saw on LS1Tech.com that the regulator is actually in the return line back into the tank? (correct me if I'm wrong here guys) so by running the T with a return line the fuel is able to be regulated.

In terms of castings, I know that Nick (Blue '91Z 6.0L vert) ran 317 castings I beleive, and made great power from them.

The 317's are 2.00/1.55 and have 210/75 Port volumes and a 71cc combustion chamber, the only difference between the 317's and the 243's are that the 243's have a smaller combustion chamber of 64.5cc, which would result in higher compression.

got all my info here:
http://chevythunder.com/LS1%20compon...ector%20ID%27s

If it were me, I'd probably go with 317's because the 243's (LS6 Heads) would likely run more money on the open market.

Re: 90 firebird formula merges with LQ4 ( questions!!! )

well i got a set of rims for the 90 formula for 350$ here is a pic. ordered all my bearings, and arp rod bolts. gonna get the gaskets and what not when i get them all here. Now, i have been doing some heavy thinking,.... some feedback on this would be appreciated. Now as my followers no i am debating 700r4 or t56. I cant afford a t56 right now so i am gonna go with the 700r4 cause i can get a better et and itll be cheaper. (already got a 700r4 laying around) now later on i WILL be swappin it out and to a t56. So when i get my harness done by POCKET ill have him make all the connections /connectors for the t56 so when i go to swap all i gotta do is drop out cut hole and put it in.

Pocket: Will that work? is that possible? or could i just pull the harness out and have you rewire it in there? idk just some input would be nice. tryin to firugre it all out.

But ill update when i start building my longblock. ttyl!

As long as you still have a manual tune in the PCM and use an external vacuum lockup switch for the 700R4 there should be no issues

your 700r4 will be electronic lockup now, but since you're going to a different ecu, you'll need to change that yourself. quite a few companies out there who make kits and if you dig around in the trans section here, you'll find some people have pieced together their own lockup kits too

I like black z06's, $350 sounds like a great deal if you ask me. Did they come with tires?

Ya check out that site and also www.stl-speed.net and www.stlsr.com, although I have to warn you, both those sites give new people a lot of crap, just let it roll off your shoulders lol. All three sites are St Louis based.

And if you're coming from IL to Redline, you will come within about 20 miles of my house when you pass through 55/270.

i like the ZO6 style wheels in general and if u picked them up for 350 w/ or w.o tires you got a pretty dern good deal. If yall are from the St.Louis area we need to find a show somewere between W. Kentucky and MO. Im from owensboro and it'd be nice to meet a couple TGO fellas.

Put a jack underneath that control arm to put some pressure on the ball joint, it will keep the ball joint from spinning while taking the nut off. Wheels look nice!

Re: 90 firebird formula merges with LQ4 ( questions!!! )

Off topic, but Tony and I were on an Fbody cruise together back in 2006, here I am parked next to him. The green '91 GTA that is on the other side of the white TTA is the LS2/auto GTA I have mentioned before. He's another friend of mine, Jeremy (GTA91 on TGO). That car is sick, and one of the earlier LS swaps in the St Louis area.

And we also both went to Power Tour this year in Springfield, IL. He was babysitting Firehawk #13 at that event.
