A newish beginning ... 305 to lt1 .. help maybe?
hey whats up all? im Greg, im new to the forum. i recently purchased a 1990 camaro rs 305 tbi 5sp manual with t-tops for 500 bucks. the car was not running when i got it, but i trouble shot it down to a faulty ignition module and the 305 runs great. i just recently had an lt1 fall into my possession from a 1994 Cadillac fleetwood and i want to drop in the camaro. ive read pretty much all the lt1 swap threads on here. but i just dont know where to begin... will the lt1 bolt up to my stock 5speed? and what do i do as far as the pcm? the caddy had an auto trans and im almost positive i cant use that .. or can i ? any help and guidance any of you all can give me will be much appreciated and ill keep the tread open on the build with pictures to come soon.
Thanks
Greg

Welcome aboard thirdgen.org.
The T5 will bolt up to the LT1. Just don't forget a pilot bearing/bushing.
You can use the auto PCM. Some retuning will be in order.

Remember, an LT1 produces quite a bit more power and torque than an L98, and that t5 transmissions don't survive well behind stock L98's, a T56 would be a better transmission choice if you want to stay manual, but increase the cost of the swap drastically.

my t-5 has been rebuilt and beefed up a little bit along with the rear end i have a 3 73 pt will that be suitable? and by a retune on the pcm .. you mean ill have to have it flashed to remove w/e it does for the automatic trans? i definitely need to get a harness too .. the one on the motor was cut up pretty bad. but as far as heater controls the original gauges how exactly does it all integrate? will any of that stuff work?

The weakest link in a T5 is the case itself, not the internals. Dont launch at 5k, and definitely dont use slicks and you should do alright
When running a manual or non computer controlled automatic, you need to flash in a manual tune. When VATS is tuned out, tell your tuner and they will do the necessary changes. Its no big deal
I have a 94-95 LT1 harness FS right now. Its for a 4L60E, but I can convert it to T5 easily

Stock heater and gauges work fine. AC systems require a few hybrid parts, but nothing too difficult. Non AC swaps use 99% factory parts

The LT1 will break the 5-speed easily if you're not careful with it. But it will work and bolt up fine and last a while if you dont beat on it. No power shifting at all!
It will bolt up just fine and work fine. But I say put together as is, and just make sure that you are ready to go TKO or T56 down the road within a year or two.

thanks for the info on the trans. i plan on getting a t56 in the next 8 months or so ... if you all could tell me exactly what i need to get kind of like a shopping list that would be awesome. things such as fuel lines , power steering components, new mounts, anything and everything to make this swap go as smooth as possible .. im trying to get all the pieces and pars for the lt1 together b4 i go pulling out the 305. so anything you can give me with places to get it would be great. thanks agian all for the help i appreciate it.
