How about relative merits of the various offerings?

I'm thinking I'll change the pump on my LS1/4L60E swap. I've got the Melling M295 on my Summit wish list.

Stock GM unit, probably the best to use.

a lot of guys seem to run ported ls6 pumps, but i too am staying stock. if i decide to stray from a stock engine setup, i'd probably go this route

Re: best lsx oil pump

I don't know why someone would want a higher PSI pump, the stock one on my LS1 runs 40 psi idle, 40 psi at 1500 rpm at 75 mph and between 60 and 80 psi when cold or running the car up with 5w30 and 179k miles.

Port the LS6 for more flow. Shim the bypass spring for more pressure

Melling pump here. Works like a dream, zero oil pressure issues whatsoever.

What oil pressures have you observed? What oil are you using? I believe you started with a rebuilt 6.0, correct?

Re: best lsx oil pump

I don't know exactly what PSI it is, my scan gauge doesn't read oil pressure, but on the dash gauge the needle points at about 2:00, maybe a little further to the right than that even. And yes it's a 100% new block inside.

What weight? Not that it helps a lot to know if you don't know what your oil pressure actually is.

The Melling is "standard" volume, I understand. Quite a bit less expensive than the "high volume" pumps I've seen. I haven't seen details, but I assume the Melling would at least be equal to a "ported" pump.

Re: best lsx oil pump

Port and shim the melling. Those operations arent LS6 specific

Maybe I'll just port and shim my own pump.

Re: best lsx oil pump

I didn't port or shim my pump, it's a race spec pump, I guess that means high volume, I'm not sure. The engine builder picked it out for me.

I want to say I was using 10w30 but the shop I get the oil from recommended something slightly thicker, so it might be 15w30.

No different than most cyl heads that arent CNC'd. Its 5 mins with a dremel and adding a small nut/washer under a spring. Not exactly a long drawn out process

Maybe I'll just port and shim my own pump.
If theres nothing wrong with it, this is a great option
