Perimeter valve covers and 4 bolt WP say it's a 98

Still, you got the whole deal for what most get just the trans for. Wish i could find a deal like that

yea thats definitely a 98 LS1. the perimeter bolt valve covers and individually bolted coils mean its a 98. Have fun with that harness and ecu...the 98s are not the best to use

Re: Blakes LSx swap - pic/vid heavy

Great work blake!

Regardless of the year of the motor/trans, you still got a good deal. You can deal with the wiring and PCM when the time comes...but I certainly wouldnt have turned that deal down. Especially if you heard/saw the motor run prior to it being pulled. Were you able to drive it or see it move? Just to make sure the trans worked...

On your patch panels. So this is the first time you've welded? If so...I have to say. Ive seen WAYYYYYY worse from someone trying to shave their doors and being a new welder.

You did it correctly. Tack welding to keep from warping the metal. You didnt seem to leave too many gaps or holes, so you did pretty good. Just make sure you get a good sealer primer on there to keep it from rusting.

This is the time to have patience and take your time. The final quality of the paintjob will be much better if you take your time and get things as nice and flat as you can now. Get those welds nice and flat. The less filler you need to make it straight the better. Tho..it seems you already grasped that concept so good work!!

You seem to be putting a good amount of work into this car...and I see no reason why you shouldnt yank the front suspension and get the k-member out for mods/paint. Its not hard, especially with no motor or trans. Heck a buddy and you can probably lift the front of the car at this point no problem. This would be a good time to clean up your steering parts, replace anything thats worn, clean and repack the wheel bearings etc etc. Just dont turn any of the tie rods, and keep the strut mounts in the same place and you wont have alignment issues when it goes back together. The front ends are really easy to take apart/reassemble....

Thats an understatement. He paid for the trans and got a free engine and harness. Id call that a steal

He's going to need an alignment anyways after the swap. The Alum engine lifts the nose up quite a bit, so he'll have to do something to the springs to lower it back down. You cant guess the ride height accurately enough for the alignment to be in specs

You wont pass with an MS3, or the BBK. All emissions systems have to be in place, and since your engine was from a 1998 F-Body you will need the AIR, EGR, CATS, HO2S and EVAP set up, which includes using the Fuel tank since it has the evap canister on top of it. There are some cams that will pass CA emissions but I'm not sure which ones will. It's funny that you ask me because I'm in Oak, since I'm also a smog tech.

I have seen your car a few times, your with the Oakland Maro Boyz right? ummm I guess that means no LS6 intake then... has anyone put EGR on an LS6 intake? With EGR would it even make sense to do so??? What mods can I make to this engine and still pass CA smog??

Please let me know if I understand this right:
98-00 LS1 w/ EGR on intake and slightly larger cam (mild loss of power due to EGR)
01-04 LS1 w/ LS6 intake, no EGR and smaller 5.3 truck cam (smaller cam compensates for loss in power and passes emissions w/o EGR)

worse come to worse you can tell them it's out of a 2002 F-Body, they won't be able to tell the difference. and then you can use the LS6 intake and no EGR.

And yeah I'm with the Maro Boyz.... so you've seen me.... lol

I remember you talking about keeping emissions, are you going to use the 4th gen cluster in that third gen dash?

Here's why i'm asking:

However...the important parts to keep it SMOG legal, are just the electronics from the LS1 dash. You need the cluster because it uses serial data from the PCM for certain functions. Mainly, the EVAP. The PCM uses the fuel level and pressures, then sends serial data to your fuel gauge. You cant have an aftermarket fuel gauge and functioning EVAP...etc etc. Things like that.

That's all fine and dandy but you still need to run the 4th gen gauge cluster in order to keep it smog/emissions legal, Unless he has decided against making it smog legal?
