wire harness compatablilty
I recently bought a ls1 and transmission pulled from a 02 camaro for 600 dollars, was a crazy deal guy had no idea what he had so bought it quick before he realized what he had. anyway the engine came complete with all belt accs and wiring harness. Only real problem is it didnt come with computer and the wire harness had been cut right at the computer. i was thinking of just going to a bone yard and cutting off the connection at the computer and splicing it in and ordering a computer off ebay preprogramed for it. Question is what cars would have the same conector to the computer so i know what i can pull it off to splice in. ty in advanced for any advice.

Re: wire harness compatablilty
Ideally, you would pull the connectors from an 02 GM V8 vehicle. But, I believe any LS series engine will have the computer connectors you need. You will definately want to have a shop manual so you can make sure the pin locations are in the right spot to match the computer. Basically, you could use a computer from a 98 with the correct pin locations if you wanted to. You will have to have the computer reprogrammed anyway to get rid of the VATS and anything else you don't want.
Re: wire harness compatablilty
Pretty much any 98+ GM car you'd find in a JY comes with compatible connectors. Most will be the Blue/Clear combo where the LSx uses Blue/Red. Dont fret, just shave the tabs off the clear covers and they fit in the red slots
Id suggest grabbing them from atleast two cars with as much lead as possible
Picking a compatible PCM off ebay or wherever is just fine. Make sure the service number is the same as what came in a 99-02 Fbody and youll be fine. 0411 is the most common and highest sought after because it is the newest update of the LSx PCMs and can control DBW and DBC. Youll find those on 01-03 LSx engines and 4.3 S10s/vans

Re: wire harness compatablilty
ty for the info. after looking closer it seems the cut in my harness is closer to the engine, im probly missing 2-3 feet of wire. idk if that makes a big difference. so knowing that would it be smarter to just buy a plug and play harness complete from one of the aftermarket sites or should i go ahead and find the computer conector out of a jy and redo and do it all my self. my roomate went plug and play with his ls1 into his 80 camaro and swears by it.
my next question would be what is the part number of the comp i would want to use?
ty again for any advise.

Re: wire harness compatablilty
Rather than start a new post figure id just add to this one. I have the old engine and tranny pulled and sold and I'm starting to clean up the oil/mess under the hood while I'm waiting for the cash to buy a new harness and ecm.
I have a quick question that hopefully someone can answer. Sence I'm buying a new harnness and ecm to run the ls1, is there any reason to keep the old ecm currently under the dash? The car was origanaly fuel injected then the PO put in a carbed 350 and left the harness hacked up with wires just cut. I'm starting to cut out stuff from the old smog and ac and other crap and cant see a reason not to just pull the ecm and all the wires attached to it sence I will be getting a new one and starting fresh with a new harness.
Will my new ecm and harness entirely replace the old setup? Would be nice and save a lot of headache if i could simply remove ecm and follow/cut out all the wires it hooks to.
Also i have a friend who put a ls1 into a 80 camaro and he ripped out the charcol canister that sits on the pass side. He told me i could do the same if I found another way to let the fuel system breathe. He drilled small holes in he gas cap to do that and suggested i do the same so i could get rid of the ugly mess. Is that sound advise or should i steer far away from that?
thanks in advance for any help/suggestions.

Dont cut anything out. Everything to be removed is unplugged/unbolted
The old ECM goes away permanently. Unplug it along with the clear C207 connector near it. Those pull through the fender. Unbolt the C100 from the firewall. The C100/C207 are necessary connectors for a successful integration of the new harness. Just throw the old engine harness cuts and all in a box until you're ready to start wiring
Emissions can be deleted assuming you're in a non-emissions county. Cap the EVAP line on the tank and buy a vented gas cap. No need to drill any holes

Re: wire harness compatablilty
I pulled the ecm earlier today. There were a bunch of wires cut on the harness that runs down the passenger side from the firewall. The wires were cut right where it looks like they original came out of the plastic shrouding, about where the front of the engine would be and were bundled with the alt. wires and a plug that went into the canaster.
All ive done is cut the 2 wires off that went to the ac condencer and i cut the wires that were already cut closer to the firewall, which is what made me decide to go at the computer and see if i could pull them through.
I live in Michigan, where we have no emmisions crap to worry about. I didn't even know there where places that it mattered till a few years ago lol. Poor motor heads in cali.

Re: wire harness compatablilty
To further pick your brain, is every wire going into the old ecm going bye-bye? i guess that's the real question I've had. I really would like to start as fresh as possible which is why I'm saving up for the full harness and ecm from your site. So much of the wiring in the car is hack and slash id like to get as clean of a slate as possible so if any problems creep up in the future I'm not wadding through 3 PO's half thought through wiring if u know what i mean.
I look at all the cut wires and only twisted together conections (w/o electrical tape even) and want to cry and suck my thumb at the thought of trouble shooting anything.
Thanks again for the help. I'd still be standing outside the car scratching my butt if it wasn't for the all info on these boards.

Re: wire harness compatablilty
ok my car was originaly a 305 tpi. so that mean i wont have a vss to bypass right?
Re: wire harness compatablilty
Shouldnt have VATS in 86. If you do, you may have to to the starter relay bypass, sometimes not. The VATS in the LS1 PCM must be disabled. no getting around that

Re: wire harness compatablilty
Then we welded in floor around the sfc and for s and g's put in a roll bar

engine back in all pretty, -air cleaner

If u remember from 1st few picks the hood was all messed up. Half primed, half flat black. So I enlisted my darling g/f to sand it down reprime it, then roll on 10 layers of thinned out rustolium and put my screaming chicken on it. total cost with decal about $60. also realy matched well with origonal paint color.

Engine bay weekend before I pulled motor to sell and replace with the ls1.

and finaly the ls1 and trans i bought dirt cheap for it

all in all been a interesting project. Started off as a 400 paper weight, to a driving fun car, back to a paper weight till i get the new motor in.
