Cash for clunkers oil pan.

I found a guy on ls1 tech that has a fbody oil pan. He only wants $100 for it. The thing is, it was in a fbody that was in the cash for clunkers program. The guy said the stuff in the oil pan I'd like molasses. Has anyone dealt with this stuff? Will I be able to clean it out and sandblast it clean?

Re: Cash for clunkers oil pan.

Drop it off at a machine shop, let them clean it, usually like 25$ for them to dip and clean the part and they have the chemicals to do it.

Re: Cash for clunkers oil pan.

I would pass and not take the chance. Less worries in the end to go with a pan that costs more and you know doesn't have any restrictions, or chunks stuck in the oil pickup and tube.

I didn't think you could part out a "clunker" car.

A good clean from an engine shop will sort out the gunk.

I didn't think you could either, but you should be able to! There are probably tons of good parts being destroyed!

At a few of my local U-Pull-its they had rows of C4C cars. I was happy to see that they were not immediately crushed, and let people use parts off of them.

Re: Cash for clunkers oil pan.

CFC cars were supposed to be killed then shipped to JYs for a short period of time. 90 days IIRC, then crushed

Alot of dealerships didnt get reimbursed because they didnt follow the guidelines. A local Toyota dealership got stiffed on all their trade ins because they crushed all the CFC cars on-site

Re: Cash for clunkers oil pan.

Just take it apart and have the parts hot tanked at a machine shop. Won't cost much, and it will get it like new.

^^^Exactly, the plate in the pan is removable with 5 or 6 bolts i believe and cleaning can easily be done, but a new pick up tube i think is a must.

You can't hot tank aluminum parts.

Re: Cash for clunkers oil pan.

Nope, have to chemical bath, hot tanking can distort the frail aluminum.

Re: Cash for clunkers oil pan.

I don't know about today and all the enviro rules but a few decades back hot tanks contained aggressive caustic soda. Aluminum parts just plain and simple dissolved.

Not sure, but a couple shops i use just use water and soap for most work, dial i think it was, LOL. Some chemicals have been banned by the EPA or some other gov org.

Of the parts Ive dropped off to be cleaned, I just tell them to hot tank it and it comes back spotless. I couldnt care less of their exact methods

Re: Cash for clunkers oil pan.

I've talked to an engine builder who had a guy bring in some cylinder heads off of a C4C vehicle and he said he had absolutely no luck getting that stuff off. Not sure whether they were aluminum or cast but that crap is tuff. I would say you should buy it from him if he can get it removed.

Not sure what machine shops use these days but I took my LS1 intake in and told him to hot tank it and it worked.

Cleaning anything from a head would be way different from a oil pan i think.

Re: Cash for clunkers oil pan.

all that stuff is, is liquid silicate, we put that in the cars at the dealership when i worked for GM, look up how to remove liquid silcate or something and the parts off the C4C cars can be sold but they are not supposed to sell engines/transmissions.... it would defeat the purpose that the EPA wants done, if you trash one car that puts out alot of emissions why use that ones engine to save another? (coming from the mind of EPA workers....)

Re: Cash for clunkers oil pan.

BTW. i wanted to add something about that C4C and liquid silicate concerning vehicles. Do you want a bulletproof engine? Listen to this, i know already these things are considered bullet proof, but now i truly believe, we had a 91 Cherokee 4.0 come in for the C4C program and we had to disable the engine. So as normal we added liquid silicate to the engine and revved it to 4K rpms but lo and behold the engine would not seize... so we decided to add sand, like beach sand to the engine and put a brick on the gas pedal and let her rip.... 25 minutes went by and the engine still purred like a kitten. next we filled it with water, a can of coke, some decent sized rocks/stones and let her rip at red line, it took 25 more minutes at redline for that engine to finally blow. i am a GM guy so im not trying to sell jeeps, but, i now drive a 91 cherokee in the winter!

They released the list of cars killed and nearly a thousand LS1 Fbodys bit the bullet along with a surprising number of LS1 corvettes, NICE 3rd gens and even a TTA

wow even ls1 corvettes!!! Those people are out of their minds!!!

Sometimes i wish i could find these people and buy their cars from them before they either trade them in for a ridiculously low price or cash for clunker them.

whats dumb about that is the cars were worth more than the trade C4C

as for the other post.. good luck with the jeep. those are junk. I see litterally a dozen a day that knock or have timing chain noise.

when we did C4C at the GM dealer it was very erratic what one ran for a long time and others barley lasted 5 min. we had at least a dozen ford exploders and out of all of them 1 would not die it finally got hot enough after boiling over it locked up. same with a lot of the chevy truck 5.0 and 5.7 engines a lot died quick and a couple kept going. we had a lt1 vert that was a good runner not much of a problem other than a leaking top and that sucker died super fast! LOL we had a dodge van and after a few J-turns and dropping it in gear off the rev limiter which almost killed the engine by that. we drained it poured in and it died with in 60 seconds

well i can vouch for 2 jeeps now, my buddy gave me a 91 cherokee for winter/driver while i do my swap and this thing just rolled 202K miles and is 27000 miles overdue for an oil change. all i did when i got it was add a quart of oil and some wipers and go. now i dont usually treat cars like this but hey its a winter beater and i cant kill it. the idea of jumping it has come around in the shop...definelty the biggest pos ive driven in 10 years. lol

Re: Cash for clunkers oil pan.

Hey! Dont bag on the jeeps now! I've always owned a jeep since I was 17 years old (I'm 38 now, so you can do the math!) Some of my most dependable vehicles have been jeeps, including my 610,000 mile Jeep Cherokee sport. Just got rid of it a few years ago for $2500.oo Bought it new, lifted it, Put 4 alternators, 6 batteries, 3 timing chains, 1 transmission (Knocked a hole in it on the trail) 3 clutches, an a/c compressor, and 9 sets of tires. Loved that thing, but it was time to move on. My current '01 TJ (Wrangler, for those who are not initiated) Has 106,000 miles and has only had the Tires, radiator and water pump changed (oh, and one battery.)
