Hawks headers...what size is best for me?

Hey everyone...
I'm thinking about ordering some headers before the money disappears. I'm sure alot of you know how that goes, as soon as you start saving something always comes up.

Anyway, I wanted to ask what size primaries/secondaries? I'm not going to do anything to the motor anytime soon. Just the obligatory intake/exhaust. When I get the car running I have other areas of focus like interior and paint before I can think about any go fast goodies.

I'm leaning more towards the 1 5/8 x 3" headers, but then I saw the 1 3/4 x 3 too.

Thanks for the help!

Depends if it's worth the extra $$$ for 1 3/4's is the question. I'm seeing the 1-5/8's from Hawks on ebay sell cheaper than on from their website.

The whole time Ive been thinking mine were 1 3/4" and they're actually 1 5/8" and it does pretty darn good for cam-only. I'm getting the bigger set soon though.

What led to your decision to get the bigger ones, more power adders? As far as I know mine is just a stock 6.0l

The fact that when my set was purchased brand new in a Group Purchase, they were supposed to be the bigger size and they aren't, so I'm exchanging them.

Re: Hawks headers...what size is best for me?

Ask questions before buying the Hawk's 1-5/8" primary part number. The description says nothing about Stainless Works. The description says "polished" but the picture seems to be the same one used on the 1-3/4" primary part numbers. When I received mine I understood why they were being sold at such a discount. I returned them and bought up to one of the 1-3/4" part numbers. That delivery was appreciated.

Re: Hawks headers...what size is best for me?

Honestly a cam only 6.0L engine will make more overall power with 1 7/8" headers over 1 3/4" headers. I would not put anything smaller than 1 3/4" on the car, even if completely stock. Honestly I am kicking myself for not building 1 7/8 on mine initially over the 1 3/4" I ended up doing.

So you guys wouldn't put the 1 5/8's on a 6.0L hmm? Wonder if I should contact Jeni and get them switched for the 1 3/4

Re: Hawks headers...what size is best for me?

A good tech article to read: http://www.popularhotrodding.com/eng...exh/index.html

The online calculator I used for the 6.0 I will be putting in my car gave me a primary size halfway between 1-5/8 and 1-3/4. This was keeping the peak torque number in a lower rpm range as my car will be 99.9% DD to and from work and around town use. My goal is to keep exhaust efficiencies in the RPM range where my engine will spend most of its life.

I thought I had bookmarked the calculator page but my mind seems to be failing. I will search some more tomorrow.

Re: Hawks headers...what size is best for me?

Well it sounds like I'm going hunting for some dyno numbers for the 2 header sizes...and trying to keep on saving for the bigger headers in the mean time.

Some more good reading is in the July 2011 Chevy High Performance mag. Came in my mail yesterday. The How it Works section has an article titled What's the Difference Between Horsepower and Torque? The Answer Might Surprise You. I found it quite informative...
