90 IROC LSx/T56 build thread.....daily driving it
Hey everybody, it's time I make a build thread for my project. A little background info on my iroc;
I bought it June 07 not running with a 305 tpi (intake was put together with household caulking). I swapped over the entire drivetrain, interior, wheels, and most of the body from my 90 l98 g2 that had a tweaked firewall
. For the past couple years I've been daily driving it and fixing it up here and there. The car ran great but didnt pass smog. I was planning on fixing up the ole l98 but as luck would have it, I was offered an incredible deal on an 02 SS and well, you know lol.
here are the most recent pics of the iroc:

Re: 90 IROC LSx/T56 build thread
Dropped out the l98:

I plan to redo the engine bay and degrease and repaint everything:

That where I'm at as of this weekend. After I finish the engine bay and k-member, the new engine/tranny will go in. I already got the adapters and x member from hawk's.
With work and dealing with a crazy 2 year old I don't have all the time in the world to wrench on it. Rest assured, I will dedicate time each weekend to finish the swap and keep you guys updated as I go along. If you're still with me thanks for reading and stay tuned because I have big plans.

Re: 90 IROC LSx/T56 build thread
Hey guys I'm long overdue for an update. So far I've repainted the engine bay, hung the 4th gen pedals, cut the shifter hole, installed earls speed bleeder, and bolted the ls1 to the 3rd gen k-member. Typical stuff, heres some pics.
Pulled the front clip to make things easier:

New paint:

Started drilling for the MC install, and my home-made pedal hanging helper:

Cleaned and painted k-member:

Earls remote bleeder:

LS1 installed on k-member:

Lowered the body over engine and transmission:

BEFORE:

K-member isnt bolted up yet, gonna leave myself some space for wiring. Next up I need to redo the engine harness and tuck the body wiring. Stay tuned till next time

3rd gen dash modified 4th gen cluster. This weekend I depinned the harness and started laying it out, thanks to Pocket this step isnt too bad.
Re: 90 IROC LSx/T56 build thread.....Updated 6-12-11
Question:
Do you think it was easier to drop the third gen motor and trans out the bottom, rather than pull it from the top? I know the 4th gen motors come out that way, but ive never done a 3rd gen out the bottom......

thanks for the compliments guys. Its definitely easier pulling the sbc from the top but since the ls1 is going in from the bottom I just dropped it out that way.

If you're removing the k-member with engine attached, then it should be easier out the bottom.

Re: 90 IROC LSx/T56 build thread.....Updated 6-12-11
Its been a while I know. Haven't given up but have had some other priorities in life and such. Since my last update I have; installed poly motor mounts, hung the pedals, installed clutch lines, bolted in the 4th gen gas tank, hung the 4th gen dual/dual cat back, got an edelbrock(?) stb, and gotten serious about the wiring.
blakecharles, no mods to k-member nor the oil pan. With the poly motor mounts, there appears to be sufficient clearance. We shall see, though.
Unfortunately, along the way I lost my camera so I don't have pics of most of the progress. Heres a few cell pics.
Engine harness extended. Starting to tie in fuse box and c100/c207 connections.

Exhaust hung...Kinda iffy on the cheapo tips the previous owner installed on the donor. Prefer a tucked look like factory.

Oh, and if I didnt have enough to do already. I picked up this 92 gta that I'm bringing back to life after sitting for 4+ years, fml. My formy sitting behind it...

Re: 90 IROC LSx/T56 build thread.....Updated 11-27-11
Thanks!
Here is a diagram I drew of how I did my fuse block. For the fan relays, I wasn't sure if I should run the 10 amp fused wire to pin 86 from a constant or ign source, hence the blue and yellow lines. Pockets diagram shows ign but the factory had it constant (I think). Can someone confirm this for me?
All other ign circuits are ran off c207 and c100 in case anyone is wondering.

Fan fuse is IGN, but it doesnt make any difference. They wont engage until the PCM grounds it and the PCM doesnt come on until the IGN is on

Wiring harness is pretty much finished. Every sensor except for a/c was retained. All thats missing in this pic is rear 02s and fuel pump wiring.

I was just test fitting my 3rd/4th gen cluster hybrid. Wiring the gauges should be easy after following this thread https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/electronics/614057-90-iroc-cluster-pin.html

So everything is wired up. Cluster is working and all. All thats left is to finish running the fuel lines, steam line, clutch safety switch, plug in the p/s, and am I forgetting any small things? Also since the engine has been sitting what can I do to prep it? What oil should I change it with?

Nice work, and what a great christmas present
. Looks like that motor is quite clean inside. Did you even keep the 4th gen power steering cooler in the rad hose?

I used a regular 2 ton floor jack..The rear of the car was up about a foot and the front was just high enough to clear the engine mounted to the k-member on top of a modified shopping cart. I rolled that under and jacked slowly at the k-member and trans followed by lots of cussing lol.

Only one problem, fuel gauge doesnt work. How can I troubleshoot this, what should the purple wire read?
