2000 SS LS1 T56 donor for 86 T/A or fix it?

I picked up a 2000 SS for 1500 bucks. All together I"ve bought new clutch hydraulics, a power steering pump, and a steering column so all together around 2k in it. It needs a front clip and I'm getting out of heart trying to put it back together. I've also got a 86 T/A 305 5 speed in need of a tranny. What do you guys think LS1 T56 swap the 3rd gen or fix the SS?

Do the swap and part out the rest of the SS. I guarantee you will make your money back and end up with the drivetrain you need... I would be all over a deal like that even if I didn't have to 3rd gen to drop the drivetrain in...

Swap would be the way to go but... If you are already losing motivation on the SS the swap could overwhelm you. If simpler is what you want stay with the SS.

Re: 2000 SS LS1 T56 donor for 86 T/A or fix it?

I got a great deal on it. The previous owner traded a YFZ450 for it and he came in where I work and said did i want to buy it and i said how much he said 1500 so I went the next day and bought it. I drove it home. Motor runs great. The tranny has a syncro issue in 4th gear. As long as you slam it it'll fall in but if you ease it it'll grind. Its not that I'm really tired of working. Its just the interior is rough and the car needs a few little odds and ends. I've got 4 4th gens 95 t/a, 2000 z28, and a 02 WS6 on top of this. Its kind of like I'm doing the work to have more of the same. A LS1 3rd gen would be a something different. I've got an 80 T/A I considered dropping it in as well its just the 86 would be a more everyday driveable car than my 80. If i get a few small things lined out on it like the VATS because I swapped steering columns, the door latch is messed up, and it really needs just about an entire interior. Everythings faded. The car could be made nice I'd just like to have something different.

Alright. GREAT, do the swap. It will definitely be different and lighter than what you are used to. If money becomes an issue you can always sell off the 95 and the 2000. That will leave you with a WS6 and a LS1 third gen camaro. Who could ask for more?

How about some details on that WS6 and what mods you would have in mind for the 86 if you do the swap?

I vote swap. No question. Part the SS out, or sell it as a roller. You will get enough dough to complete the swap on your 86 most likely. You'll LOVE the thirdgen with the LS1 swap. The cars handle the power increase quite well...makes the run as good as they look!

Re: 2000 SS LS1 T56 donor for 86 T/A or fix it?

im going with the majority. if you already have 4 fourth gens then id really suggest doing the motor swap on the third gen.
option 1: have a okay looking fourth gen with the great powerplant from factory.
option 2: have a b/a t/a with that great power plant
option 3: give me both cars for 2k and we can both be happy
haha really though.. do the swap and dont look back!

Re: 2000 SS LS1 T56 donor for 86 T/A or fix it?

The WS6 has heads/cam/intake. Its got the MS4 Prc 215s and the FAST 102 intake. True duals dumped. Tick performance level II rebuild on the 6 speed. Its got a midwest chassis 9 inch with 410s. The engine heads/cam set up on it holds to stock bottom end record. Go to youtube and type in texas speed. It shows the pass they broke the record on. If I do end up putting the LS1 in the 3rd gen i'll probably just do bolt ons with it. I'd really like to make a nice dependable DD 86. The Ws6 is the fast one. Right now my 2010 Cobalt SS is my dd and i'm killing it with all the miles. I've put 33k on it in a year.

Re: 2000 SS LS1 T56 donor for 86 T/A or fix it?

How long of a process do you guys think it would take to do a the LS1 swap in the 3rd gen? I'm not worried about keeping the a/c or anything. The reason I ask is I don't have a garage to work on my vehicles in and its cold and wet now. I'd hate to tear it apart and not be able to do anything with it. The more I think about it I could do the 4th gen rear and have rear discs and run a set of C5 wheels I've got laying around. Just get the front adapters of course. I sware I just hate to junk a true SS. So many thoughts.

what options do you have for longtubes on these cars? I always thought it was hard to get a longtube on a 3rd gen period let alone a LS1 swapped one.

Re: 2000 SS LS1 T56 donor for 86 T/A or fix it?

There are more options than yrs ago.Hawks sells many different lts for out cars with lsx motors but they are expensive.Another member has just recently tried out new cheaper husler swap headers with good success..and they have mid length which is what I plan on on getting later. Most guys just stick with the stock fbody manifolds for the time being and make a custom y pipe.

You are on TGO, so obviously we are all going to say to do the swap! Do it, lol. I think it will be much easier for you where you have the donor car sitting there, and won't have to source many parts like most of us.
