Ls1 air intake set ups
i am trying to figure out what i am going to do for my air intake set up for my ls1 t56 swap im doing. i have it all mocked up right now but keep going back and forth. right now i have a k&n 04 gto cold air intake that fits good. ive seen a few ppl running them and they look good. the other rought i was going to go was make my own from 4 in pipeing from intakehoses.com and run it down in the driverside batt. tray in front of the tire. the only reason im doing it that way is to keep it cold air and not just hot air thats under the hood. ive heard the k&ns are pretty restrictive and the 4 inch will have a better gain. so i want to see what you guys think or what you have done on your own swap. post pics and let me know..thanks

Re: Ls1 air intake set ups
I bought a airaid you-build-it kit... Came with a single peice of assorted bends and its made of hard pladtic so no heat soak on your iat sensor. Worked perfect for me and mines 4 inch.

Re: Ls1 air intake set ups
built mine from scratch. a bit crazier than necessary though; keeping MAF screen, so i can safely move it closer to the filter without issue and get rid of a couple pieces/adapters

I went with building my own intake. Although I haven't had the car on the road yet, it fits well.
There have been a few other people running this style CAI. That is where I got the idea from.

slp dual cold air, made the center just for the ls1 and used the larger truck MAF

Re: Ls1 air intake set ups
now i wanted to run 4 in all the way but i cant bc of the maf reduces to 3.5..i know you can convert to speed density if i remember and get rid of the maf. is there any benifits or cons to doing it..or is there any other way i can run 4 inch all the way...then again i don't know if the motor really needs 4in all the way bc its not a built motor just basic. heads cam headers.

Re: Ls1 air intake set ups
i've got the 85mm truck MAF and its just under 4" (i think i had to adapt to 3 7/8" to get a really snug fit with the couplers).

Re: Ls1 air intake set ups
Whats the rest of your set up? What throttle body are you running? The 102?
For the record...Im running the FAST 90 with a NW 90mm TB. I decided to run the 85mm Z06 MAF. A 85mm truck MAF will also do the trick. It was fairly cheap, flows PLENTY good, and is pretty incognito. Easy to tune and is in no way choking anything out.
I just cant see spending $250 on a 4" MAF when ~$150 gets you a truck or Z06 MAF and will work just fine for you. Unless you are trying to sneak every little pony out of the set up. But Im willing to bet you wont notice unless it truely is the restriction in your intake system.
Just my opinion. Tho the 4" system with that nice billiet piece would look nice...not denying that!

Re: Ls1 air intake set ups
Ide just grab an 85mm then. You'll see little to no gain right now by getting crazy with the MAF size. 1ADan brought up the other good point...that the 5 wire MAFs house the IAT sensor built in. Im not running the internal IAT myself. But only because my harness was set up for the separate sensor, and I just never changed it.
When you go to an aftermarket intake, unless you step up and get the 102, you will still be fine with that 85mm MAF. If you do step up to the 102, then at that point you're already spending a LARGE chunk of change. Whats an extra 250 for the big 4" MAF

Re: Ls1 air intake set ups
I bought a plastic MAF housing 100mm from, http://www.powrmax.com/PowrMAF%20100.html
This avoids heat soak of a metal housing, and it uses stock GM MAF card.

Very nice. You might want to be careful about driving in deep puddles. Ghettocruiser sucked a bunch of water and locked a engine. Never did hear what the situation was, but ouch. He's weighed in on this thread, without comment, so could be ok.

Re: Ls1 air intake set ups
Thanks. The car doesn't see much rain unless I get stuck at a show or cruise during a t-storm. I did fab up a piece of plastic yesterday for the wheel well. This will cut down on any dirt getting to the filter.

Made my plastic shield on Monday. Went to Lowes and as soon as I walked in say a black mixing trough for $4. Got some screws and black spray paint.

Re: Ls1 air intake set ups
Yup...I was only commenting on the MAF choices.
My problem was it was sunny and awesome when I left for work. Then when I was heading out, there was a massive downpour. I waited a while...didnt expect there to be flooding. I ended up in a puddle that was WAY deeper than I thought, and my filter was just about submerged. I had no chance. By the time I realized how deep it was, it was too late. I also just rolled into it. REALLY hate myself to this day...even though its being rebuilt haha.
Until that point, I had driven in rain before. Hit puddles, etc. Wet roads and smaller puddles dont really get to the filter in that location. Maybe a teeny bit, but not enough to put any water into the intake. Never any issues until I tried to submarine it.
That location is FANTASTIC for IAT's and throttle response though!! My IATs were always around ambient. Or higher if sitting in traffic due to the hot pavement. Just have to be careful. When i get mine running again, Im going to keep my set up as it is. HOWEVER...Im keeping a cheap filter and a couple fittings in my hatch. Im using a quick release clamp, and if its gonna rain, Ill just hot swap the filter arrangement. One day of sucking in hot engine bay air is better than going through this again.

Re: Ls1 air intake set ups
thats why pulling from the fenders maybe a better choice. my air temps are always very low so its not like your giving up flow and temp. just less chance of hydro locking
