Lsx coil swaps

Hey guys Im just curious as to what coils you are running.I just decided for giggles to swap my stock high mileage ls1 coil pack on the driver side with the lq4 coil pack i got when I bought the lq4.

Now Ive been reading about using other Gm coils and people reporting power and driveability gains.I was having problems with the driverside bank o2 1154 code coming up everyother day.Ive switched sensors multiple times..checked wires etc.The driver side o2 would be slightly more carboned than the passenger side..even if I switch them around.I have a a/f gauge wired to just the driver side and it always seemed to run rather lean.Injectors were cleaned and flowed..new plugs/wires.Never found an issue...

I put just the driver side lq4 coil pack on and noticed an instant pick up in not only throttle reponse..but a/f has become more stable and the car isnt as sluggish from a light compared to before. Its been 3 days like this and I honestly can say the car has improved.I need one replacement coil for the other lq4 pack I have since 1 is busted and then I want to swap it out..fill the tank and see if I picked up better mpg from more efficient burn.

From what Ive found in research is that the truck/ls2 coils are higher output and longer dwell time.I need to have my tuner load the dwell tables for the new coils to get the most from them but they have been a good swap.I see why alot of guys swap ls1 coils for the 6.0 packs. If you get your hands on some..Id like to see if anyone else sees a difference in using them.Ill take pics of what I did to mount the new packs instead of modifying my fuel line that was hitting #5 coil dead center.

I may end up buying that style if I see further gains switching the other bank of coils.id sell my ls1 coil packs and keep these as ls2 coils as spares.

Re: Lsx coil swaps

I never had any issues with my LS1 coils... For a while I was hunting for the truck coils with the heat sinks. I just never had the spare cash to dump on them...always had something else to buy.

I might see what I can get for my stock LS1 coils while Im doing my build and snag a set of truck coils.

I think you need to run truck wires with those though, since they mount higher. I THINK...check on that though.

You can use the same wires if you have to. They reach fine but all the slack is pulled out of them.

Im running 6.0l coils with ls6 manifold and ls1 fuel rails. If you are very careful you can bend your fuel rail by hand to avoid the coil packs.

Re: Lsx coil swaps

I am running the D585 coils on mine. I tried to get the stock LS1 style coils to clear my factory AC box and they wouldn't. I ground the box, but it just would not clear. I could have made a custom bracket but for the cost of the D585 coils I just bought them. I sold my stock coils and brackets for 75 shipped and bought the new ones for 120 shipped. I am happy with them, but I do like how the stock coils sat on the valve cover better these ones sit up higher hence the better clearance.

Re: Lsx coil swaps

You dont have to use truck wires when using truck coils..I just simply drilled 1 whole on each bracket and bolted it down about an inch lower. Its held on by 2 bolts..no bending the fuel line for me.Im also running ls6 intake with ls1 rail/injectors.

Though the passenger side became extremely tight with the heater box.I unbolted that last coil..plugged it all in..then mounted the bracket to the valve covers before I wiggled the coil back into place and bolted it down with the top bolt only.I assure you..it does not move with only 1 bolt.

Now that i have done the swap I can say i picked up better driveability..not power but more efficient.Im seeing increase about 2mpg so far.I really want to retune the car and set the proper dwell times to see how much of a difference I get.

The truck coils with heat sinks are hard to come by..not worth buying new.But the 5.3's/ls2 coils are still a worthy upgrade from the ls1 coil and the 5.3s are littered in yards.

Re: Lsx coil swaps

Ive used just about all the different coil types

Truck heat sink coils are about the strongest, but you'll never notice a difference until the setup is pretty aggressive

Re: Lsx coil swaps

All I have run is the round heat sink coils and LS2 coils on my carbed swaps, I'm sure the lesser of the atomized fuel enjoys the better spark.

Re: Lsx coil swaps

I know the heat sink coils are strongest, seems that when I switched to my lq4..the stock ls1 coils were a step backwards.Weird some ppl do and dont notice a difference.I sure did but that may be from the high mileage ls1 coils I had which sometimes had a slight miss.Ill know more next time its on the dyno for a retune.
