Before and after ls1 ported throttle body.

I posted on Tech about my issues and forgot to share hear with you fellow tgo members.

I felt as if my motor was not crisp and responsive as it shouldve been even after putting on my 243 heads and being tuned. So i asked around for opinions on what things to look at both tune wise and mechanically that may or may not affect how the car ran..especially blipping the throttle.

I spent some time and made some changes I wanted to do long ago,4' filter and intake pipe,p/p throttle body, and make a air box to block engine heat from the filter.I got lucky on an ebay find for a potz p/p tb that had a crack in the powder coating for $50,new k/n cone filter for $40,and $10 for 4' pcv.I put on the new parts and headed to my tuner as I was advised my issues would be ore tune related above all.

Which proved to be some small issues as we sat in the car checking parameters as we played with the throttle, some timing and coil dwell time etc.2hrs later and a free retune on the street and I feel like the car runs alot better now especially once its at operating temp,my throttle response is dead nuts crisp..the gas pedal is a very positive feel with the new tb.We eliminated a small cam surge issue..but the best part is gained more mpg!Its been a solid week of logging my mpg.I went from 15-16 at best in the city and 21-22 hwy.Now I get solid 17mpg city and 24mpg hwy..with my foot being floor more times then not lol.

Dare I say I might have gained very small amount of power not from cooler ait's or the tb but from a much longer street tune.I feel I can launch the car very nicely with no bog which has really hurt me at the track before.Im very pleased with how this thing runs..but sadly i end this post stating someone felt the need to back into the front of the car 2 days ago.Just hard enough to break my headlights brackets pivot points, broken foglights, and now my rad has a pinhole leak. always something...

Just another example of how throwing trick parts at a problem is no substitute for proper diagnosis.

Re: Before and after ls1 ported throttle body.

Proper diagnosis my tuner gave me no direction on.It was more me sitting in the car..driving and replicating things I was feeling and then tune it out.But atleast he spent the time on it that it clearly needed. The parts I needed a new filter..my old one was so worn the the filter material was falling apart lol.I was seeing north 55* of intake air temps and that needed to come down.

It can be argued that trial-and-error IS diagnosis.

Yes it can be to a degree...it sucks more cause usually there is more error than trial which always equates to more $

Thanks, made me smile too.I need to record my run ins with other cars but its happens so random that I dont get a chance to mount the cam to catch it on tape.I got an armdrop event coming up at the end of sept so hopefully I have good shots then to upload.

Not unless your idea of it is trying buying new $ 350 carb after new $ 350 carb, whereas I was thinking more like try $5 jets after $5 jets in the carb you have, or the LSx equivalent is cheaper, quicker and easier: a few keystrokes on a laptop. Did you not budget for a dyno tune? Did you not go to a shop known for many excellent LSx tunes? Either one would be false economy. We have a saying: jumping over dollars to pick up pennies. The old version was penny wise, pound foolish. Either way, don't be that guy. The cost of buying a TB would cover a proper tune.

Re: Before and after ls1 ported throttle body.

Having the car retuned on the street didnt cost me anything with the tuner. It was done at a well known lsx vette shop in my area where I paid to have it dyno tuned and street tested earlier this yr but there were small issues that needed to be addressed and the tuner would go over things once I ironed out my problems.I had slight misfires on #1 and 6,my alt ad failed.I got them fixed and still felt tune could use some work among changing some parts intake wise which lead me to do the above before having the tuner readjust things.Much happier now

Re: Before and after ls1 ported throttle body.

A dyno tune wont always correct driveability issues. Theres no load on most dynos, atleast not like street. Dyno tune for wot, track verify, and street tune for driving manners
