cam choice
Im in the process of doing my first LS swap. Its a 1999 Lq4 6.0. I have decided to goto carb. its gonna be my weekend warrior. Im doing the basic mods for now cam, intake, timing chain, springs im using the vic jr intake, 6ls msd ignition, 750 Q series quick fuel carb. My question is what cam should i get?

If you want that combo to KICK ***? Run this cam but be warned it will EAT valve springs, probably at a rate of a set per year or two tops. But the thing will FLYyyyyyyy

Lq4 has dished pistons and lower compression ratio so a big c isn't going to do much for you ,
Stock lq4 compression is 9.5 iirc not ideal for NA
Budget build I'll look into either getting lq9 pistons is a .5 increase in compression and milling the 317 heads IIRC that the lq4 have 317 heads
So you can increase compression even more
Or
Get some 243/799 heads and mill them or slap them on stock should boost compression up to 10.2
What trans are you running , and exhuast, long tubes , are you putting a stalled converter or running a manual Then what gear
Running biggest baddest cam is cool and all but it won't be a good setup if you don't have matching supporting mods , you can get big power from smaller cam if you do your homework on your setup and goals you want , checking valve springs and changing them gets old quick if it's a race car than cool but weekend or even daily driver I want longer life out of my valvetrain IMO
I'll say get your cam or decided to get your cam last thing on the list so you can have a balanced engine combo and be happy
You can either go off the shelf or get one spec out for your needs
I would say stay under .600 lift and around 230 duration
317 and 243/799 heads flow similar but head flow above .600 is cap and a waste to get cam over .600 unless it's a fully cnc ported head
218/228 .525/.525 making 480 then with 20% drivetrain loss that's being conservative that's about 384 to the rear wheels
now put 243 heads and mill them or anything else to increase compression with more better cam as hot cam are pretty much dated there are better grinds out there you can break 400 easy

I've dealt with EPS Cam should talk to them if your on ls1tech.com talk with Pat G which is who spec my cam or you can talk to Predator he will spec one out for you good guy alot of guys running cams he spec out majority his cams are on XER lobes majority of cams are on comp blanks and are usually XER lobes which are more aggressive on valvetrain , EPS to include patg uses LSG lobes or other EPS Cam lobes that geoff cam up with as he used to work for comp iirc but anyways you get small cam that puts out big power and easier on valvetrain and hence acts like a bigger cam
long but alot of info , just research and build your engine and then decide on cam lol call couple cam company's and go with one you like either way you would be happy now matter what

things for the onfo man, trans is a 700r, converter im going with a 2800 or 3000, exhaust im going with longtubes, and gear im runngin a posi 2.73 (for now) wanting to go with 3.42 or 3.73
What's your budget ?

I'll still try to find some 799 or 243 heads with that to boost compression and should be a stout weekend warrior
Fyi a 6.0 lq9 or 4 either with flat top and with 243 heads is basically a LS2 engine if I'm not mistaken there's a guy who got 500ish with supporting mods on cam only

Texas Speed and Performance was very helpful with my cam choice. The guy there answered my email quickly and directed me too the type of cam I wanted. More power, keep drivability, don't care about mpg, want the option to to boost later without having to get a new cam.
