So I went to the track yesterday...
In search of an 11 second slip.... again, but the track was kind of cruel to me, yet again so no luck on the 11. But it sure ran consistent, five 12.0's in a row in fact! Trapping a decent 120 mph each time with pretty weak 1.9-2.0 60' times. Getting a stick car down the track that consistently was surprising. My fastest of the day was 12.005 @ 120.39mph with a 1.904 60' the other four runs were 12.030 @119.98mph, 12.083 @ 120.44mph, 12.039 @ 120.18mph, 12.044 @ 118.93mph and my first shakedown pass of the day which was 12.201 @ 118.97mph which was my first pass this year in fact. I've been track shy ever since I put valves into pistons on a bad shift a couple years back. The clutch was dragging and not releasing properly but I put a trusty LS7 clutch back in and replaced the valves and its all good now.
Im running old tired and dried up et street DR's 275/40/17 so there was no bite at all through first gear. I will head back again this year if possible to see if I can get my goal of 11.99 or quicker.
If I put some real slicks and skinnies on it along with a gear swap this thing would produce a lot better times, but its a driver, not a race machine. Met a couple fellow TGO members down there unexpectedly which was cool, both real solid guys and had SUPER clean cars and that added some even more excitement to watch them run as well. Weather was great and my crew of six cars all ran decent with no breakages so all in all a dang good day.

Nice job... It's a good day at the track when nothing breaks! I'm just finishing my swap and hoping to make our tracks last street car day in 2 weeks. I'm not looking for too great of times though due to a T56/4:10's, but it should be fun.
Good luck with the 11 second hunt!

That trap speed is good for a mid 11 second pass. It's definitely not easy getting it done with a 6 speed(vs stalled auto.) Good stuff, post up a vid!!

Damn wish i knew you were headed down with a crew.I was contemplating going with my buddy in his srt10 ram and trailoring my car for a few final passes of the year before doing the turbo project.Wouldve been fun, I assume you went to cayuga?
Or almost skipped work to go to the Picton armdrop races too which was a huge turnout.

Well done Cam. Get yourself some tires and you'll be golden. The fall air helps to build some power too. At least from my experience anyway.
Where did you race? I had intended to get to TMP myself.
.005 you say. Missed it by THAT much!

Re: So I went to the track yesterday...
When I bought these tires I had the LS1 in there and after messing with the suspension and pressures I got it dead hooking for a while. It would always pull a 1.6x 60' but this engine makes a lot more grunt and I have changed the suspension set up again although I did run the same springs that worked so next time I'll make some LCA changes and see. I think I could net 1.5's if I put a true slick on it, especially with a gear change ( 3.73 currently ) as I shift at 7K or so. This one loves to buzz up high and it goes through the traps with plenty left in 4th.
86TA I'm going to try and get out one more time this year, i'll let you know when.
0.005, yup. So close TMP correct.

It's a funny thing this drag racing.
I had a best 1.7 flat 60' with the previous engine, old McCreay dirt track tires and less gear (3.27). With the new and improved engine (lots more trap speed), a better tire and 3.73 rear gear, I can't do better than 1.8x.
Go figure.

Ya funny indeed. If I had more time to make more passes im sure by the toss of the coin I would have squeaked in there. But it was a great day, no breakages, good weather, no crashes, lots of cool cars out, good eats, good people, good times and more ahead

Nice numbers Cam. get that thing to 60 foot and it will be an 11.50 car. I ran 11.78@113.5mph as a best in my old LT1/auto setup With consistent 1.66 60's. Get that suspension dialed in!

Re: So I went to the track yesterday...
Theres lots I could do to make it perform much better at the track but its a street car and it drives exactly how I want in that regards so Im not going to change much. The tune up is very safe and mild as well so theres plenty of gains if I were to go max effort but not this car, its too fun to drive plus it has t tops and no cage.
Im slowly putting together another build with a boosted LS for a more wicked track machine. Caged, mini tub etc.
I'll get an 11 out of this thing yet though. Im going to adjust my IC and try again now that we have some footage to review.

completely understand! Pretty well the old Iroc-z got parted and sold. Started becoming more of a racecar and got real boring lol. Im trying to keep my current an 11 second streetcar without cutting the car apart. Keyword is trying lol

Re: So I went to the track yesterday...
I hear that. Thats EXACTLY why I started another build. I was originally planning on boosting this 6.2 but as it is I can barely get into it until 3rd or 4th on the street anyways so adding more jam seemed pointless, not to mention I'll break out of no cage land at the track so truly a waste.
Your old red car lives on, Its been partly welded onto Schmitt tunings race car and is making the circuit around CASC this year lol.

Haha yep that car likes to get around and play hard!
It almost went to the yard when i saved it. I had it sold to a buddy with a rotten LB9/5spd car too just before but the race track destiny called it back out, so off it went. I'll see if I can get a pic

If you got 4th gen hydraulics I'd point out the restrictor can be drilled, but if you had that you'd be missing shifts. So congrats on the no breakage, the consistency, and the trap speed.

Re: So I went to the track yesterday...
Thanks. Tick master, drill mod done. I had a bad clutch that dragged and wouldnt release. I thought it was air in the system and tried two OEM masters and then a TICK which seemed to be working fine but the track put a little too much heat in the disk and at 7K WOT on the 2-3 it didnt release properly and I went 2-1 instead and BOOM. Happens fast up there. Log said 8400RPM
Replaced clutch with a new LS7 from SDPP and its been great since. Was tired of working on it so I avoided the track for a couple summers is all. Wanted to drive it. Its a driver not a race car. That outta clear it up for anyone curious

Re: So I went to the track yesterday...
LOL @ nice. It is being nice when you wind them up to that special place where the mechanical limits of mercy exist and hear it say, GIVE ME MORE!!!! Its a beautiful relationship
As for the Copo 5.3 yep its a gem of an engine. I doubt very much that GM will sell them as a crate to keep the COPO Camaro provenance intact, but if you want to build one similar its not hard its just kind of a waste of coin when you could build a 414 for the same kind of coin and have that much more engine to play with. LS engines at this point are value wise power uo to about 1000whp at which point they become exotic ( read that as more expensive and less reliable ) than a BBC would be but that bar keeps rising, which is incredible for the little engine that could.

Re: So I went to the track yesterday...
Thanks Justin, it was a looooong and curvy road to get that dang 11 second slip without butchering the car out of street trim. Its been set up this way for a few years now and im going to leave it this way for a few more at which point I will be doing some minor mods and rework a few things that should push the mph up to about 125 or so. In the meantime I have other projects to clear out and work on. I think we have some sloppy cel phone footage of one of the 11 passes from one of our crowd that I will post up when I get it.

If I track the car again I think im going to swap out the rear brakes to something I can fit a 15" over and run true slicks and skinnies.
