It's just too easy to fabricate this stuff yourself, plus everyone has a different opinion as to where to put the turbo, how to run the downpipe, what size turbo to run, etc. Even a difference in the exhaust housing can mean the downpipe clears or hits something.

Some truck manifolds and a few hundred dollars in tubing/vbands and you're done.

Yup.

If you're a noob to welding and dont have a welder or anything...there will be additional cost involved. I dont know what a completely fabricated turbo kit costs for a 3rd Gen but startup costs will be up there. I have $800 in my welder (new), bought a bottle and new flow meter for $200, crash course to welding was $300.
I havent looked what I have in tubing (square tubing, t6 flanges, v-bands, mandrel bends, merge pipe etc). If a fabbed up kit for our cars is $1500, then I've exceeded that by now. But..I did it myself. Also just mounted an intercooler on my own, going to do the tubing on that also. So how much is that if someone else does it? I still have more fab work to do. Learning as I go but again, it gets done at my pace, waiting on nobody..picking up a trade and makes me feel happy for accomplishing something like this on my own.

No doubt, but for all the guys out there that can't fabricate or even weld would have some better options. For myself, that's not the issue, Time is. I'd rather pay for something ready to bolt on at this point in my life.

Re: Bolt on turbo setups?

I would assume people need to expect to pay in the 900-1500 range depending on what the kit offers. From log, to forward facing headers and what material etc.

IMO the only way you are making a direct 100% bolt in setup is to offer a LOG setup or a custom forward facing header with a smaller turbo like a turbonetics 78mm etc. I know its not ideal for people with 6.0L+ motors but if you want bolt in no cutting then you are probably best off fabbing a kit yourself. Utilizing the battery tray for bigger t6 turbo's almost always requires a shorter rad and standing it up then you run into oil drain issues and whatnot. (I have done this setup before with a T6)

Re: Bolt on turbo setups?

I myself dont have the time nor the means to tackle this project on my own.I have a small 78mm t4 and want to keep things as bolton as possible without modding much of the car itself. I think quite a few other member would be happy with a bolt on log setup of just a hot side.Any exhaust shop could fab a downpipe from there. The cold side is easier to diy aside from maybe having someone weld a bov on and mounting an intercooler will depend on what size you choose.

Re: Bolt on turbo setups?

I've started working on a log type manifold for a friend w a 3rd gen.
Easiest. Cheapest to make.
Pass side top mount. But will only be able to use tc hurricane series/t7x/0n3 t4 types.
No bw s475 ttypes.
For what's its worth built 2 cars w tc78s w a 5.3 and a 4.8 and both Well over 650rw and quick spool w that turbo. So imo that turbo size will be adeqaute for 9/10 guys. For street/strip duty. With 3in down pipes.

Got any pics? When you say pass side top mount are you referring to the "truck" style with a cross over behind the motor?

Re: Bolt on turbo setups?

If anyone is interested, I'll be making another set of modified truck manifolds with 2.5" v-bands, thermal coated. If you look at my truck manifold/build thread you'll see my finished manifolds. Only difference will be I'll be using 14 gauge tubing on the set I'll be selling instead of 16gauge like on my setup.

Very similar. Its a good location to place the turbo. On the car im working on. Hes using truck offset balancer and accessories. So putting the turbo in front of the wp/balancer between efans is too tight. But plenty room uptop. Its a semi budget build. So went w the log.
All connections vbanded for hot side and exhaust. Using ss. should work ok w tnetics 7875

Re: Bolt on turbo setups?

Well soo far everyone that Ive contacted into making this happened have faded away..life happens. Hopefully things might pick up once the winter hibernation phase is gone. Im still collecting parts for my build,no where near ready to mock anything up and if it comes down to it later on Ill just have to try learning to weld and build it myself which will severely delay things for this race season.
