I'm back!

Well it honestly didn't last too long...staying away from 3rd gens. I sold off the carcass of my 1989 Formula 350 after a terrible experience with ARD led to the car falling apart quicker than my wallet could save it. I had the car since high school and it killed me to see the car go, but bills and life get in the way.

I ended up getting a 2nd gen 1981 with a 400 swap later on, much easier to work on and no need for tuners. Well that went great and I had a mechanically solid car for a good long while. All that was left was body work. Not too long into my 2nd gen project I got a text from a friend saying he really got the 2nd gen bug and noticed I got one recently... A couple weeks or so went by and we joked about trading my 2nd gen to get my old 3rd gen back.

Well it happened. I really miss the 2nd gen, there is nothing like the simplicity or sound of an old Poncho motor.

However, high school muscle cars are one of those stories everyone looks back on starry eyed going "wish I still had mine". So I couldn't pass up the chance.

That said, it still has the custom interior I built for it, 4th gen fuel tank with a custom stock gauge I modified to work with the sending unit, as well as the gauge needles, the built transmission, and the owner put a cammed 5.3 motor in it. It will need a rebuild eventually but will keep me happy for now. In the mean time I'm coming up with ways to spend enough money on it to make me think I'd be crazy to ever sell it. Oh the memories

I just got a set of Torq-Thrust M Anthracite wheels delivered in 17x8 and 17x10.5. I also ordered a custom plug and play harness from Pocket to replace the home made one in it now (He wants it back for a project of his).

I doubt anyone remembers me here, but here are some pictures!

More pictures to come as soon as the 17x10.5s get mounted!

A minor update. 315s fit, just barely! It's lowered on Eibach Sportlines:

Re: I'm back!

Have you hammered in the wheel well lip already?

Reason I ask is because I was running 275's on mine and every friggin bump would rub the tire edge like no other.. finally took a rubber mallet to them and haven't had an issue since... I'm planning on going wider in the near future for my swap and I'm just curious how much clearance you actually have inside/out?

Re: I'm back!

I haven't made any clearance adjustments just yet. The tire hits the bump stop at full droop. The wheel well looks like it will just barely clear. I will know soon. I have to get the rear centered after lowering it, but I have a LT1 rear end with 4th gen offset wheels so it will take some tinkering.

Damn that looks good. Those tires and rims, oh man. Air cleaner looks a bit small though, guessing because of how close it is to the radiator wall. Just an observation. Welcome back!

hey welcome back... did you ever get anywhere with the gas gauge ohm thing you were working on? (I have a digital dash and would love to try it on my spare gauge)

Re: I'm back!

The engine is quite a bit different now. When I had the car previously the motor went bad and upon taking it apart it turned out the be the wrong motor, and was not a rebuilt engine like I paid for. I was in the process of buying a house, after which my relationship fell apart and I scraped by selling car parts and flipping vehicles.

I then parted out the firebird and sold the roller with the trans to a friend of mine. He ended up building a custom harness and putting a nicely cammed 5.3 in.

The intake/tube assembly on it now is from a TBI truck with a much bigger filter off to the passenger side. I'll get some picture of it, fits great!

I haven't had it back long enough to get back into tinkering with adapting other stock gauges to the 4th gen sender, but I'd like to. Soon I'll be back into the car full swing to install the new harness from Pocket and getting a good tune in it, along with seeing how the suspension likes the 315s out back.

Right now I'm a bit distracted with a new and unforeseen project. My dad was hit by a drunk driver in his 2002 Z28, it was our father son project car and neither of us wanted to part with it. I took out a small loan to get it fixed and put a Ultra-Z hood on it, while redoing the exhaust, AC and a few other bits.

Re: I'm back!

It was a late night, but the Firebird is running again! I just finished installing Pocket's harness and building a tune for the car. I think that was the most painful part. I switched to a 411 ECU that was out of a 2001 S10. Every table had to be imported by hand and all settings were switched over for the F-Body stuff. Thankfully I had a couple of credits left over from the other cars.

I'm sure the neighbors hated the 4am wake up call, but I enjoyed it.

Re: I'm back!

I finally got a chance to turn my attention to the 3rd gen again and finished up the firewall/C100 passthrough so I could get it off the wheel dollies and out into the light for some sanding and rust prep.

I wanted to see what all the chopping was about so I tried out some tuning tricks. I can't decide if I want to leave it this way:
