long tube headers/exhaust

Just got the racing innovations long tube installed. Curious to see how everyone has ran an exhaust using a 4l60e. That thing is fat. I'd like to see some pics of people's setup so I know what I'm getting myself into.
Is there a way to get it to y back into a single so I can run a spintech muffler in stock location? Obviously ground clearance would be nice but that's a given haha

Re: long tube headers/exhaust

Your best bet for ground clearance would be to build a double-hump crossmember. I'm pretty sure hawks sells one if you don't want to fabricate it.

This isn't mine; but you get the idea with this pic:

Re: long tube headers/exhaust

I bought the hawks because it has the exhaust clearance for the long tubes. I hate that your only choices are spohn which is nice with the TA relocation and driveshaft safety loop but is directly in the way of the exhaust if you have long tubes or hawks which is ideal for exhaust clearance but doesn't help remove the TA from the trans tail. Ive emailed UMI multiple times about making one that has the exhaust clearance like hawks and the TA relocation and driveshaft safety loop like spohn. They usually respond with a "we'll keep it in mind" or "it's on our list"

I bought the hawks assuming I could fab a mount for the TA between the SFCs. But I recently ordered an Unbalanced Engineering Decoupled TA so everything should work well together once I figure out how to mount that thing.

BTW, I'm using a t56.

Re: long tube headers/exhaust

I bought the Hawks crossmember but that's not the problem. The transmission pan is just so frigging fat. The problem is in the front of the trans there's very little room between the pan and our "frame rail" I doubt I could make a fist and squeeze by. After that point it's clear. I didn't check drivers side but I assume the same problem

Yea, I didn't think about the pan on the 4l60e. I have a 4l60e sitting in my garage; and it is a lot wider than the t56. It might just look too small, but with my t56 I have just enough room to build a 3" Y pipe. With your auto you may have to run smaller diameter pipe. Either that or route it completely different than the double hump crossmember route.

Re: long tube headers/exhaust

Yea that's where I'm at right now. Was hoping that someone would have already come across this. Idc if it's duels or not. Heck if I knew I could get away with it I'd just run the headers but I highly doubt that lol. I wonder if I could somehow get it to be close to stock routing. Not really sure with looking under it and checking it out.

Re: long tube headers/exhaust

I swear i've seen this issue before in a thread or two, IIRC they were talking about the angle of the O2 sensors on the different brands of headers. Hopefully this info will strengthen your search.

Re: long tube headers/exhaust

Brings back bad memories of "fit like a glove."
I have SW 2" headers, 3" collectors, and 4" single with 4l65e. It can be done. I still had to take it to a shop to get it to fit.
Let me know if you need pics. I did take the TA off the trans as I used BMR trak pak.

Re: long tube headers/exhaust

I don't think the TA is going to be a big issue for me but it does look like you came down a little and still have good ground clearance. Once it gets warmer I play around with it and see. More pictures are welcome! It's definitely a tight fit.

These three are not my car, but the same system; 2-->3-->4 around 4L65e.

The pass side pipe is the most difficult. You can barely make out the pipe in this pic. I changed this and tucked it up a little better than this pic. Car's in storage, now; so no pics since the change.

Re: long tube headers/exhaust

What I did was section the pipe for a better angle (black); scalloped the frame rail for better clearance (red); then welded big strong stud collars on the frame rail for new attachment point (green) for the trans crossmember getting it out of the way (side to side attach rather than bottom up).

Looks good. Exactly what I needed to see. I was thinking about doing what you did and maybe oval the pipe a bit right where the crossmember bolts in.

Re: long tube headers/exhaust

I have the racing innovation long tubes on my car, but with a T56. Have you installed yours yet? Mine are practically touching the frame rail so clearance is very tight. I had my exhaust installed yesterday, with the Hawks T56 crossmember we were able to make a very nice Y-pipe using a Magnaflow Y-merge pipe. But even with my T56 it was tight... so I'm sure a 4L60 would be even worse. The Hawks crossmember is worth the money though, in my opinion. Since it allows you to run a pipe on each side of the tail housing. I'm using a SLP LM1 catback on mine. Hopefully someone can shoot you in the right direction. Lots of good information on here...

Not the greatest picture. This was right after install. I'm very happy with them. I did fight a little to get it in but midway through I grabbed a beer and took a deep breath. They slip right in afterwards
They are pretty tight to the frame rail underneath as you stated. Yes the Hawks helped alot too. It is very tight under there with that 4L60. One day I'd like to revisit my exhaust but not anytime soon. Maybe when I switch to a 6.0 and not just a cammed. 5.3

do you have an under car picture of how you have it routed around the auto trans?

I can maybe get a pic or two in the next few days. It's in the garage and I have no heat. Being that I'm in the north it's kinda cold but I should have some time in the next day or so to crawl under and get some pics

Thanks. I"m debating buying a cross member with the TA relocation mount on it and I don't know if I'll have room to run the exhaust after the trans if I get it, vs getting a standard mount and leave the TA on the tail of the trans. I'd like to see as many pictures of other people's set ups as I can before making a decision.

Sorry for the bad pics. It's in winter storage and I only had a jack at my garage. It's basically setup like every1 else's. I used a spintech muffler. It's not bad but for me I would have liked something louder.

Pretty good, looks like you have decent ground clearance as well.

yea tucked up pretty nice. Only spots iv hit were the actual header as that is the lowest point. I wouldn't mine seeing some mid lengths. Not that I don't like my long tubes but they are a pretty tight fit and the lowest point of my exhaust.

Nice. I'm looking at going with the Mid-tube headers. I ordered that HAWKS cross member, they said it should fit my trans as well so...we shall see when it comes in next week. If it does, then I think I'm set.

here. Also Speeddemon here on the site has a great thread on his mid tube install.

I still think this is the best available system for an LS swap in our cars.

Yes, it's pricey, but they've done their homework.
