Anyone else have problems with shifter cable?

2001 truck engine/trans, including the factory 2001 4l60e shift lever.

88 camaro shifter, replacement 88 camaro shift cable.

The problem is when I push the shifter to park the trans shift lever doesn’t actually travel all the way to the park position. It also won’t travel all the way back into 1st if I pull the shifter it all the way back.

One thing I’m curious about is why there are two different length shifters offered for a v8 88? I’m wondering if I’ve got the wrong shift cable

Re: Anyone else have problems with shifter cable?

I don't have your application exactly, mine is an aftermarket shifter and cable with a 4L60. Unless I really work the adjustments on the cable ends, I'll either find park or 1st hard to engage. I don't recall, does the factory cable have a threaded end and clevis (at the trans) that can be adjusted? It seems to me that my shifter has some adjustment at the shifter too but I could be wrong.

There’s no adjustment on my cable. I’ve seen that the 4th gen cable is adjustable but I’m not sure if it will work.

Re: Anyone else have problems with shifter cable?

Doesnt the 3rd gen shift lever use an elongated hole that allows the cable to move back/forth.Dont think the later levers are that way.Maybe try the 3rd gen piece.

Also i think the later levers are longer than 3rd gens ones. This changes the travel range of the cable.Detents on 3rd gen shifter are probably spaced differently than truck shifter.

i don’t have the third gen piece. This is what I assumed the problem was, a travel issue

Re: Anyone else have problems with shifter cable?

I have read the replacement cables are not right, and someone I knew replaced one and it wouldn't work. He wound up finding a good used one and it was fine. There is a thread on here about a place that makes "custom" replacement cables that are very well made. A little more expensive, but probably worth it in the long run

This shift lever is the answer. If anyone ever has this issue I pulled It off an 85 camaro with 6cyl. It allows an adjustment and fixed my problem.
