Just a Youn'gun (56k Warning)
Well,
Ive been on these boards for sometime. I post sparringly, but love reading through all of the tech stuff.
Anyways. My name is Sheldon, and im only 16 years old. Ive owned 2 Camaro's already and my iroc which you will soon see was my second (first one was rotted out completely). I am work at an Aerospace company, and im fairly good with metal work/fabrication/machining. Being the top student in all of my Machine/Auto courses. This is just the thing i love to do.
My iroc, is a 1989. Its been my project since my dad and i drove 1500km's to pick it up in august. Been sort of a weekend/nights project for 10 months, and it slowly came together.
The car project was intended to be a "clean it up and drive" deal. However, the longer the car sat in the shop, the more i had an urge to modify it.
Soon enough, Engine was stripped to the long block (while still in the car) to have a cam put in. I did the cam swap all myself, except dad slid the cam in, due to my fear of damaging the cam bearnigs. I replaced the cam, added a chrome timing cover (i actually hate chrome, i find it tacky and much prefer painted parts). Engine came together with new comp valve springs, and custom painted rocker covers, tpi base, fuel rails, runners, water pump, plenumn, tb etc. While finishing the top of the engine off, a good guy i know, adrian (hawk i think on these boards), gave me some information about porting my TPI unit. I had the idea, soon the basement turned into my own mini porting shop as i ported the intake.
Engine was all re-assembled, but manifolds, painfully had to be put back on due to an issue with finding a y-pipe for my edelbrock headers.
Anyways, thats enough about the engine,
The interior was in need of some attention, previously had sat in a damp garage, so there was some musty stuff inside it that had to be cleaned out, also due to my fear of rust, the interior was stripped to rust paint the floors. As i was re-assembling the interior, i grew to dislike my dash. Soon enough, a dash from a '95 Z28 was sitting ready to be swapped in. Interior is yet to be fully completed, however, its getting there. Stock seats were retained due to a planned future of a 8pt. cage, and stock seats work well with harness's.
Now onto the exterior. Since the car is an '89. The paint was hurting. Sun baked, and patched in certain spots. This was the last part of my project. I sanded all the paint, and dad painted it with a high build primer, and then a Bright Rally Red basecoat and a nice thick clear. 16" iroc wheels are still in place, and calipers have been painted red to match the car. Exterior also is yet to be fully completed. Still to come is clear signal lenses and Xenon diamond headlights. Also needed are the iroc-Z decals, other then that, exterior wise, she is pretty much done.
As im sure all of you are expecting. Pictures

Looks real nice. Are you gonna paint the headlight buckets or leave them red?

As another young teenager (17) I envy everything youve done with that car. I wish i had the materials/skill to do what youve done to that, looks real nice.
I do suggest painting the headlight buckets black, but either way, its a great looking car. Nice job

There has been alot of thinking about the headlight buckets. Original plans called for them black, but seeing them red, i kinda liked it. I may leave it like that for a while and decide seeing its much easier to make them black, then turn them backto red.
And, here are a few progress pictures
(in a somewhat order of occurence)

Hey man, i saw you post pictures of your car on LS1tech too. It looks sweet. I got my first Camaro at 16 but I let my dad do any/all of the mechanical work. I wish i had the skills to build up a car like you have!! Good luck with it!!!

Re: Just a Youn'gun (56k Warning)
Thanks!
I pride myself with having the ability to do this kinda stuff. It makes up my lack of english skills. Which also works out since im working towards being a mechanical engineer.
Ive got some more parts on order, and more custom fabricated stuff ill have to do to make it work.
i spend 8 hours a day fabricating parts and repairing machines, then do it all again when i get home with my car. I eat, breathe, sleep metal. Love it

Re: Just a Youn'gun (56k Warning)
Very nice Sheldon. I've seen this car get from the beginning to what it is now, lol! MSN last night conversations about what we we're going to do to our cars. Looks good dude. Both you and your dad did an awesome job. I still don't remember talking to him at the CCFBG show but perhaps at the next event we'll do it up again.
Re: Just a Youn'gun (56k Warning)
Nice job Sheldon!!! There is no other feeling like doing the work yourself and feeling the satisfaction. These 3rd gens are fun to work on.

Re: Just a Youn'gun (56k Warning)
Thanks everyone!
As much as i love this car to death, i still have a sweet spot for the LS1 Camaro's. ONLY car on earth id sell this car to get.
And it would have to be for a Certain one:
Pewter or white
1SC (stripper car)
M6
SS
All that being said, if i were to put some aero FX and the high rise spoiler on my iroc, that would probably completely change my opinion. I kinda like the look of the iroc hood/decal with the high rise / aero FX
Opinions?

Great job. I wish I had a garage that big to work on my car with.
One thing I would suggest getting is new front blinker lights. The dullness of them don't look good with the shinyness of the car.
