Pics and Plans for my 84 Z28!

I picked up this car, my new baby, about 2 months ago and I cannot wait to start working on it. The plans are 91-92 gfx, hawks 5" spoiler, SS hood, black interior with leather seats, gauges, b&m mega shifters, eibach sportline lowering springs, koni or kyb struts, black paint, new engine in the future..

Here's how it looks now though:

Thanks for checking it out please leave some comments!

Man that car is a beauty. I would just repaint it the grey it is now, get rid of the lower stripe and paint the existing ground effects to match. And build a nice little 350 for it.

screw them, they dont have open minds! what color are you planning on? the 82-84 gfx is from an odd time in american history, a style that will never become attractive again

trust me im not building the car for anyone but me, and its getting 91-92 gfx all around! its what I want! The car is most likely going to be jet black with chrome wheels. Thanks for the good comments guys, glad everyone likes it how it is now even!

I vote keep it stock. Chrome on these cars i think is out of place. But the car is yours, go nuts and have fun.

Re: Pics and Plans for my 84 Z28!

I like my 91-92 gfx but honestly if i had a 82-84 z28 id leave the gfx on there. I really like that style for some reason, its just unique to me i guess.

By the way did you get lucky and get the fiberglass hood?

Re: Pics and Plans for my 84 Z28!

No the hoods not fiberglass, and needs to be replaced as the corners are rusted pretty badly. I think one of my first purchases will be the SS hood. As for the 84 GFX, I just love the look of the aero gfx and I've always wanted them. I'm hoping to sell mine to cover the cost of the 91-92 kit. So far I picked up a 92 rear bumper for 25 bucks. Not a bad start!

Re: Pics and Plans for my 84 Z28!

please dont put new crap on it, the ground effects on there look 10000 times better then the new stuff, specially the front bumper, i cant stand turn signals that arent recessed on these cars, the new style bumpers are so gross

Re: Pics and Plans for my 84 Z28!

Well personally I like everything about the 91-92 style. I'm not a fan of the pointed nose thats on mine now and the lip with the holes in it. I won't change my mind on this, but i'm not looking forward to mounting them to all new holes n stuff. ugh.

I second this opinion, that car is in realy good shape, just paint it and put some meat under the hood...someone will just think it is an ordinary 3rd gen until you smoke him. Keeps cops of your *** too. Take all that money from changing all that stuff in your list and start upgrading your whole drivetrain, starting with the rear, drop in a posi with 373's and then do yourself a motor-trans combo at the same time.

Re: Pics and Plans for my 84 Z28!

Please dont tear apart that car, it's way too nice to be torn apart.

I wanted a project car and I got a high mileage RS with no options on it so I woudlnt feel bad screwing around with it.

That car is way too nice and way too clean to be tearing it apart.

It's your car, do what you want, but I'm with the majority here on this. If you want 91-92 gfx, then get a 91-92 car, or at least a car with broken gfx that could actually use replacing.

I've always felt that if you wanted to totally butcher these cars around, at least do it to a base model, but it's not my car. It belongs to you, so do whatever makes you happy. But I think a lot of people here (and me, now) would rather you sell that car for what it's worth (it IS clean) and just buy a 91-92 car.

Re: Pics and Plans for my 84 Z28!

I guess at this point i'm more in it for show than go. I want something very slick, very clean looking. and THEN, in a couple years before I get it painted I wanna do a motor swap. Probably just the 350 gm crate engine you see in Jegs or Summit for $3000 turn key. I gotta stick to my guns and do what I like, because in the end its my car and if I like it, I'm happy.

Re: Pics and Plans for my 84 Z28!

I think you're idea sounds great for a nice looking car- you'll have the 80s style but much cleaner for a more modern look. One thing I'd consider is finding a 91-92 car. Here's why:
1. You have an 84 in great shape, it's worth something to the right person.
2. 91-92 means you don't need to track down and install the ground effects.
3. Get one with a black interior, it'll make your life MUCH easier. Tracking down black interiors are hard, and dying stuff will rarely look as good as factory.
4. Newer engine that will have more power.
5. Better gauge cluster and probably more aftermarket gauges available. Also would have an electronic speedo which is more common as far as aftermarket stuff goes.

May be worth checking to see if you can get a cheap 91-92 with black interior and a good engine- it'd save you time and money in the long run. First thing I'd do is upgrade the rims though, not sure what GM was thinking with the stock ones.

Re: Pics and Plans for my 84 Z28!

I used to have a black and gold 84 Z28 and I loved that car. The 91 and 92 where also very cool, but I would have never changed my 84 Z28. I know a 92 RS in the Buffalo area if want one of them. If i had more money I would buy the 92 RS and trade you for you 84 Z28

Thanks! Well......I picked up a 92 rear bumper, but I'm not sold on the front and sides. I may pick up a 85-90 front bumper, and leave my side skirts. It would be all different....but I still think it would all line up pretty good and be different. Whats everyone think?

Uh, that won't work son. Sideskirts won't line up with a 92 rear bumper.
Don't rush into it. Get a plan and stick to it!

Re: Pics and Plans for my 84 Z28!

I know the rear is a bit lower but its not that much lower and if you look at the pics of my car, I think it would line up just fine. As for the front, the 85-90 side skirts are just like mine, so the front should look good too. I wish I could find pics of someone who has mixed gfx, that would help me decide for sure!

Keep in mind your sideskirts are straight, the 92's are curved. Mixing them would look bizarre.

Interested in selling the gfx for a reasonable price when you're done with them? My 83 could use them.

If you want to modify it, then do what you like. I say don't get the mega shifter, go with a Hurst Dual Gate shifter, much better. Get a high rise spoiler as well, some hatch louvers, and dont get chrome wheels. Get Some IROC 2 Lines.

Re: Pics and Plans for my 84 Z28!

My 84 front gfx are definitely for sale, or possibly the entire gfx for the right price. Everything is in great condition. I really wanna just do 85-90 gfx, I'm just worried about the side skirts, which is why I'd like to keep my 84 skirts because they are so similar. They almost look the same to me.

Whats everyone think? Haven't you been reading their posts? 16 guys have been telling you to leave the car alone. You should take firebirdjosh's advise, If you want a later model IROC with the later model GFX's then go buy one. I'll be you could turn that one you have at a profit. Your only gonna ruin that one. Trust me.

What he's trying to tell you is that the car is worth more money as it is. Not many of the early Z's are in that good of shape anymore. To someone who appreciates it, that car is an awesome, rare find. I'd kill to have my 83 Z28 to look that good. As much as I'd like to buy your gfx, I'd have to agree with all the other guys- buy an 85 to 90 car if thats what you want it to look like.

You gotta keep that 84 the way it is. It would be ****in sweet with a nice 350 or 383 in it.

Re: Pics and Plans for my 84 Z28!

I have to agree in keeping that beauty stock and finding a '85 up to play with.My '83 Z28 is completly original exterior except for the gold IROC wheels(I have the 15" gold wheels stored). But again as mentioned she is yours to enjoy.

Re: Pics and Plans for my 84 Z28!

But here's the thing, I'm customizing it either way....So whats the difference if i customize an 84, or an 85. Just because the ground effects are different?? I plan on doing wheels, suspension, hood, spoiler, paint. So whats the difference, because if I had an 85, it would look the same as if I customize the 84.

Re: Pics and Plans for my 84 Z28!

The big difference is the '84 you have is so clean and original to start with.If her body wasn't in as good a shape, especially the nose and GFX,then it would be a different story. So many have converted the '82-'84 cars that few have thier original appearance. If you start with a '85 or later car then you already have the softer nose and deeper GFX.You really have to use the '85 up skirts with the '85 up nose. Also you could start with a '89 or later RS which would have the exterior you want.Again this is my personal opinion. But I have to say you '84 is a beauty.

EDIT:Just curious is she an original L69 HO car(VIN eighth digit G)or does she have the LG4(VIN eighth digit H)?

Re: Pics and Plans for my 84 Z28!

I can always sell the parts that are in good shape though. Since I want to customize the car, its not a big deal to me. I DO know I have a nice car, and its rare to have it in such good shape, thats why I bought it. But I do want to design it my way, and that means the 85+ gfx. Other than that nothing else is changing it will still be an 84. When people ask me I'll be happy to tell them that its an 84, and it will be in even BETTER shape then. but basically what you guys are saying is that since its in good shape I should just leave it alone.., So if it was in bad shape, i should then customize it?? whats the difference? If it was in bad shape you would tell me to get 84 gfx again, because its the original? probably not. so I honestly don't see how it matters? Glad to get your guys opinions!!

Re: Pics and Plans for my 84 Z28!

What everyone is saying is you will be replacing everything that makes the car nice, original and unique. It will defeat the purpose of starting with a clean original car to begin with. Sell it, spend half as much money on a later V8 RS car that runs well, but not quite as nice of shape (very common) and do all the stuff you want to it (except the gfx because it will already have them). You will end up spending less money for the same end result AND someone else will have the chance to own a nice clean early Z that appreciates the look. Everyones happy

Re: Pics and Plans for my 84 Z28!

Man, this guy is dense. Okay here's another example. You buy the Mona Lisa. If you could put a price on it, it would be worth millions because there is only one. But you decide to make it better and take a pack of crayons to it and add a mustash and a black eye on her and some lightning bolts in the background. Well, it's still the Mona Lisa, except now it's worth jack s**t.

Do youself a favor, go to http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/index.jsp?bkms= and do a search for IROC Camaros. Any day of the week you can find nice cars from anywhere from 1800 to 4000 that are just what you're looking for. And you can post your car there and sell it, at a profit, to somebody who's looking for a nice clean ride. I've seen cars that are just the way you want to do yours at very resonable prices. And all you gotta do is pay for it and drive it away. And in the long run it'll be waaay cheaper. The mods you want to do are'nt cheap. A good paint job is around 3 to 5 grand. The suspension mods are about the same. And even if you could find a nice set of black leather seats on ebay or a wrecking yard your still looking at 500 to 1000 bucks. And then there are the carpets, door, headliner and sail panels to change. Etc, etc. It's big bucks, and your making a big deal about a 20 dollar bumper.

Go get the car appraised at a couple of good dealers. It should be free. Clean her up as best you can and put it on the net for the appraised figure. I'll bet you make enough to buy what your looking for and then you can spend your cash on personalizing it. But I've got a feeling your not gonna take any good advise. So that's all I'm gonna say about it.

I don't like the 84 gfx at all though. I hate how pointed it is in the front. The rest I could deal with. I really want an 85-90 front.

The problem is you don't know what the hell you want! Your first post said you wanted the 91-92 GFX, you then bought a 91 rear bumper.

I'm guessing it finally hit you in the head that they won't line up with the 84 side skirts you so badly wanted to keep! Now you really want the 85-90 front!

These cars are a dime a dozen, why didn't you buy a 85-90 if thats what you wanted.
With a car that nice, the first part you take off and exchange on it you'll be losing money.

That car is in great shape considering it's age....how many miles does it have?

Tell ya' what...if you really don't like the '84, I'll trade you my '91 for it.
