89 iroc in Germany
Hello, kind of bored right now so thought I would put up some pics of my 89 IROC. I bought it in Maryland when I was stationed there (army) and I just got out last January and moved back to Germany to try my hand as a civilian again. Anyway after a huge headache trying to get my drivers liscense straight everything is good and I can go pick it up in Bremerhaven next week.
You all have no idea how excited I am about that I've been driving my wifes opel for the last 3 months. Anyway enjoy.
89 IROC white on black, L98, T56, LS1 rear end, some may remember I tried to sell it back in Nov but found a cheap enough international shipper and kept it.

Re: 89 iroc in Germany
well I finally got all my paperwork together and was able to pick it up last Wednesday, kind of a long day, train left a 5:50am made it to Bremerhaven at 1:30pm got the car at around 3:30pm got home at around 10:00pm. Not to mention that along transport my cd player was stolen so 6 hour drive with just the exhaust.
I can't believe how good she ran, sat for 4 months just needed a jump and cruised 6 hours at a 100mph. I am soo glad she is back I forgot how much fun it is to drive when it's not an opel lol.

Re: 89 iroc in Germany
thanks for the compliment, here you go. I think if I was going to do it again I would get the jimmyjams cluster just because as you can see in the pic the oil psi and the volts gauge is kind of blocked by the turn sig and ignition. Also I still need to drill holes in the covans cluster for turn sigs and any other warning lights etc.

Tell me about it I hate driving in the states, I love the autobahns out here but I hate driving on cobblestone in the cities plus the narrow streets is pretty nerve racking sometimes, but I still love having it over here.

God how I wish the US had an autobahn...

Sure, driving an IROC. Try driving an old VW that would hardly do 80K--I'd get "wind pull" from the Porches and Mercedes blowing by me! Shoot, I couldn't even pass (and needing to was rare) if I could see head lights in the rear view!
Very nice car. For your sake I'm glad you didn't sell. You'd have been kicking your backside frequently.

Re: 89 iroc in Germany
well that certantly is the truth James, though the IROC still gets wind pull from the porsches, not as bad as in my wifes opel.
I am very glad I didn't sell it I was thinking that if I brought it over here it would never pass inspection, but I took it in the other day and it did really good, it didn't pass, but mostly little things I needed to fix or finish anyways so it should be completely legal in about a week or so.
Also forgot to mention that the Germans love the IROC, wife really doesn't like it, but that just means she doesn't want to drive it.

Re: 89 iroc in Germany
thanks everyone for the compliments.
Just an update that everything is now fixed and it passed inspection last Friday. On a side note it is much more enjoyable to drive with a tight steering column, and backing up in the dark is also better with reverse lights, and it is much nicer having e-brakes that fully engage.
My wife still doesn't want to drive it, and my brother-in-law had a party the other night and when I showed up in the IROC the party stopped and I was surrounded my Germans asking all kinds of broken english questions.

Awesome car. It's really cool you have it over in Germany! Where did you get the rear hatch well cover? That's a good idea, especially if I decide to throw a bottle in there. I'd still be able to have stuff back there and not worry about the bottle getting slammed into by random things.
Thanks!

Re: 89 iroc in Germany
Thank you harner, I actually found the cover in a junkyard, and at the metal shop across from my old work had them make me some mounting brackets and jb welded them in place.
If you're trying to find one hit the Crazy Rays out in your area, when I was out in Maryland I always found these in junked cars.

Re: 89 iroc in Germany
I wrote a huge explanation about the mounting brackets this morning but I closed the window before I posted it ARRGH!
Anyway I don't have any pics of the brackets themselves but they are shaped kind of like this:
| |
| |
____/-------------\______
One peice of metal about 4" long and 2" wide drilled 2 holes in it and welded 2 bolts through them. Fairly easy to mount just kind of a pain to get it lined up so it opens and closes and is straight.
Hope this helps, if you have any more questions feel free to pm me.
Kenny.
edit: The 4 single lines are supposed to represent bolts evenly spaced on the upper part of the diagram.

I once considered swapping in the hard cover and purchased the mounting brackets from GM. I suggest checking with your dealership--I doubt there's a huge demand for them.

First off, beautiful car. I bet those Germans stare everywhere you go. They have some strange fascination with American muscle... can't blame them.
Second, what did you do to your t-tops to cover them like that? Covered t-tops would be a godsend right now. My poor little R-134 converted A/C can't keep up with the sun beating down through the top of my car. I'm already suffering and it's only been up to 95 so far.

I bought some used t-top shades from a member on here and some new headliner fabric from Joannas and tore off the old stuff and glued the new fabric on it. I think that now if I knew then what I do now I would have just got some foam board or something and cut them to match the tops and put fabric on them. That's really all it is a flat headliner board with fabric so it would be pretty easy to make your own.
I know all about Texas summers, I grew up in Austin and even with ac they are still brutal I haven't had to go through one in a few years though, actually I kind of miss the Texas heat.

Thanks for the compliment, and yes it is definately not the car to drive if you want to blend in lol.

I used velcro tape and put a 4 small peices in each corner of the glass and the board, and that makes it very easy to remove and put on.
Yeah I definately wouldn't glue them on, I love being able to see out them in the winter.

Hello
Here is another 3 rd gen camaro in europe!
I live in Malta and here we have about 22-26 camaros and transams! from a 430,000 population.
I was wondering how much charges and duty have you paid to inport that iroc to Germany.
Malta is fu**** hard to import a car.
for example if I but camaro for $1000
as soon after I payover $2000 for shipping , I have to pay over $30,000 for registration plus duty and more!!
I know your thinking that I am a liar but please dont do that because Malta is really like this!!
I paid over $36000 for my RS camaro 5 years ago when in Usa i could baught a new corvette,
but its life and I live here and sometimes I hate it that I love american cars and not european cars! may be an opel corsa like the ex army guy!!
here is my car!! was baught brand new from GM dealer locally and it still have 15.550 on the clock!!
at the moment I wish to buy a set of 18" chrome irocs but with all the shipping charges and duty I have to pay I will wait a bit more!! for them
and for those guys from Usa saying that $5 for a gallon of gas is expensive, here is over $9
cya guys

MCGARNICLE, dude your car is hot!!! Like you I am Soldier stationed at Ft Stewart, but TDY at Walter Reed (helping our wounded warriors when they come home). Anyway, where in MD did you get the hatch cover. That is a nice piece. Hope I can pick one up while I am here. Maybe this weekend.
Gonna enclose a picture of my Roc that I picked up on EBAY for $1600. I have added complete exhaust, complete MSD, diamond fire E3 plugs (awesome), K&N etc...

hey blove78634, thanks for the compliment. Just check in the local junkyards in the area, my preference was crazy rays they have 4 locations around Baltimore, and was like the only yards in that area that actually let you go in and look around. I was stationed pretty close to Walter Reed at Aberdeen Proving Grounds, still kind of miss it but it has nothing on living in Germany.
Looks like you got yourself a great deal on your IROC, looks really clean.
