TODAY'S 3 DIFFERNT UPGRADES ,18'S ,IROC GRILL, NEW 145 MPH CLUSTER

Hello

Today finally I received the new 18" Irocs and also paid a good sun for duty charges! and afetr went to the vulcanizer and I baught only 2 tires for the front (Toyo Proxes T1R 245/45/18) but in the attached pics you can notice that the rear is in the good direction and the front is not because they will be fitted on the front!
For the rears I am planning to widen them from 8" to 10" instead of planned 9 1/2" because I went under the car and with some tape and some blocks of wood with different thickness I noticed that I can afford to put 10" rims, and now I know exactly how much clearance there is from the inside of the tire to the inner of the fender!
only a small modification will be needed!! to rap my 10" in 285/40/18 and will have no rubbing!

About the other mods, today I also fitted my new bow tie grill which in my opinion changed the look of the car and also took some time setting the milage of my 145mph speedo to my original miles!! (seems to be a hard job but with a budweiser on the bench and listening some good music you can make it!!

Please let me know what you think!? will update soon as soon I have a reply from my engineer about the rears mods!!

Cya guys

Re: TODAY'S 3 DIFFERNT UPGRADES ,18'S ,IROC GRILL, NEW 145 MPH CLUSTER

You say both of your front tires are facing the wrong direction?

You know what you can do to fix that, right? Swap them side to side. It's really not good to be running a directional tire backwards. It can cause the belts to break, the tire to separate and then you need a new tire, again. If you don't drive the car it's not an issue, but still.

I really want to get 18" Irocs for my next set of wheels, but at the same time I want a 17" wheel so I can get some nice sticky tires for the back. Not much offered for 18's like that, without a HUGE price.

I plan to run 285/40R17's when I get my next set, it's a good looking size. Had a set in my possession for a while.. they were sexy.

Your car looks great, I'm honestly not a big fan of the color but it still looks damn good.

I've got 285/40s on my 9" wide rear 17" rims, so I bet you could put yours on, without having to widen your wheels.

Re: TODAY'S 3 DIFFERNT UPGRADES ,18'S ,IROC GRILL, NEW 145 MPH CLUSTER

Hello ling427ttvette

First of all thanks for the comments and about the colour its a choice!! the very thing I like in my car is that is the only 1 in Maui blue out of 20 Camaros on the island here in Malta, the others are all red and black!!

And Stephen I know I can fit the 285/40/18 on the 8" but its not recomended and I am going to widen the rims from 8" to 10" so I can fit the 285/40/18 on the 10" wide to be perfect with the tire specs and you should know that when you rap a rim with bigger size of tire recomended the tire wears only in the middle and the traction and road holding is not good as it should be!

By the way! opinions!!

Very clean car. Looks good and I bet it turns heads in Europe. Here are a few suggestions to make it even better. Consider changing the red bowtie to one the color of the car. I did mine by going to a computer sign graphics store and having them make me a bow tie the same size as the one on the grill to match my body color. Just press it on and you are set. Came out looking so much better. When you look at your car the red bow tie just does not fit the rest of the color scheme. Best thing is the bow tie cost me under $5.00.

And consider changing your steering wheel to the pre air bag wheel. The "blockl" wheel is so ...for lack of a better word...ugly. Other than those suggestion (fix the directionals too) your car looks great.

Bad idea.....Removing crash safety equipment is a no-no.

Very likely, a car that was equipped with an airbag, will not pass come inspection time, and you'll just hafta put it right back in & have wasted your $ on a new steering wheel.

Car looks real nice, Glad to see a Third Gen overseas, probably don't see many over there. Is that an air bag wheel, I thought the air bag steering wheels were different than that?

its an 89 rs! your right, its not an airbag steering wheel but will try to buy a new wheel with the circular horn instead of the square one or else will put an aftermarket steering wheel!!
once I had a modified European car and was modified and I baught a Momo steering wheel for it! it was very nice and it was a 12" steering wheel!
I also saw one on Mr iroc z car and I like it!
for me his vert is one of the best loooking car but the black is not my favorite

thanks again

Hello guys

after a long wait ,today the machine shop phoned me and told that they are ready but when I went for them only 1 was finished, by the way hope the other one will be ready soon too!

went home with 1 rim and painted the job on the inner side with Hamerite to prevent from corrosion when you inflate the tire (sometimes in air compressors there is water because no maintanance is given)

and on the outerside with silver paint to match the rim so when you look through the 5 spoke you see a good and clean job!

Re: TODAY'S 3 DIFFERNT UPGRADES ,18'S ,IROC GRILL, NEW 145 MPH CLUSTER

Today as promised I went to the tire shop and I baught 1 rear Toyo 295/35/18 for the ready done widened 10 inch iroc rim

I also attached some pics of the rim with the tire ,where there is no clearance from the inner fender and some hammering is needed !

with a iece of hard wood and a good mallet in 5 mins the job is already done, just push the lower corner a 0.25" inwards,
from the tire to the lower control arn there is about 5/8 of an inch and everything is ok!
after I went on the road I also notised that there was a noise from the inner fender and went again to the garage and jacked the car and found a piece pf metal from the fender that was polished, it was a part of the fender a bit higher from the lower front corner that was interfiering!
another time wood and mallet and everything done!
to be sure the 3rd time I had a passenger behind my seat and no noises at all!!

left wheel and fender is done! right wheel from the machine shop and another tire and the staggered combo is done !!

hope it was helpfull!

What backspacing are you running? Any adapters?

If you do, and the spacers were part of the wheel, what would your backspacing be, with 0 offset wheels?

They are zero offset wheels with 4.5" backspace plus 2" when widened so I am running 6.5" backspace!!

hope I was helpfull and if any more questions let me know!!

Just I am happy that my camaro has the widest tires on the back in Malta!!

no adapters used!!!!!!!

no adapters used!!!!!!!
You know....I've asked around SEVERAL times & get no clear answers, without offset & adapter bs info.

I too have zero adapter or offset wheels, 17" x 9", and want to go to 11". My backspace is 5", so it looks like a 7" backspacing with 315s would be very possible with minimal work.

I have 285s right now, and having my wheels widened & fitting 315s looked possible, but I wasn't sure.

I figgured with the combined knowledge spread out over TGO this would be a simple thing to figure out by others experiences.....Not so....

make sure you make the right desision because if you go to an 11" rim its a 12" from outside and you will have problems with the inner fender or else you have to use a minimum of 0.75" spacer and also be sure of what tire are you going to wrap the rim with!!
if you have decided what brand of tire to use go to their website and after go to tire specs and after you fing 3 rim sizes you can use on 315 but the side wall will be different on each rim because of rim size!
in poor words dont use a big tire on a small rim because the sidewall will go outwards a lot and you will have rubbing for sure!!

you can find 18x11 iroc saga continue of Mr iroc-z and you can read his thread and you can see all his job to the inner fender and i dont want to weld on my virgin car!
today when I was hammering I was also crying, because it was difficult to me!!

Wait a sec....If you started with a 8" wide wheel, 0mm offset, your bs was 4", not 4.5".......Right?

I already have tubular LCAs on the way, so those will give me bit og extra clearance over the stock wheels.

The 315's are spec'd for a 10"-12" wheel, which is why I'm aiming for 11".

Got to add the edge of the rim on that usually .5"

I to also have a 6.5" BS wheel on my car with the 7" that you want you really going to have to do some massive work to the inner fender, 6.5" was kind of pushing it.

dude, those tires looks sick as hell, my only suggestion now would absolutly have to be, get some discs on those rear brakes, that would looks wicked.

When we talk bs, we measure from edge, not tire mount, to hub surface mounting.

And...With a 9" wheel, 0mm offset, that means I have 4.5" bs. 2" would put it at 6.5"...Same as ya'll do. And I'm not afraid of cutting. I can't be....considering my 4th gen mirrors & rear wing.

When a company talks about the size of the wheel they talk about the width for mounting the tire so when they say 8" and 10" wheels there accually around 9" and 11" total width if you add the lip, my car has about a .5" lip on each side.

So on buddies car he has a 8" wheel with the 0mm offset add the lip and you get about 4.5" BS.

Yeah....I know that is how it is OFFICIALY mueasured, but the general public only knows how to lay a straight edge across the wheel and measure to the mounting hub. Maes it easier to, even if it isn't "correct".

Even Skulte measures that way for his adapter spacers. Makes measuring for customers so much easier & straight foward.

Well yeah what your saying is the right way to measure BS but you can't say since the wheel is 9", 0mm offset ,it has a 4.5" BS cause it's more closer to 5" BS.

Well...OFFICIALLY it is 4.5" bs, by the standard measuring method, it is 5".

I just assume these days, is a person say 6.5" bs, it is TRUELY 6" bs, plus the .5" lip.

Make sense?

I bet, my the "standard" measureing method, I would measure 5", for a 7" bs, at the outer lip edge, after widening it 2".

Ok I see where your getting mixed up but there is no 2 ways of measuring BS, BS is always from mounting surface to the very edge of the wheel that's including the lip. Have a look at this link should give you a better idea what's going on http://www.skulte.com/adapterfaq.html

Anyways to the original poster must say nice car always wanted to see someone fatting up the rears like that, would be the same thing I would do if I had a camaro!

Re: TODAY'S 3 DIFFERNT UPGRADES ,18'S ,IROC GRILL, NEW 145 MPH CLUSTER

I'm not confused at all....I referred to that exact same Skulte diagrahm myself, up above.

In any case....I crawled under there and physically measured, metal of the rim to the metal of the wheel well, 1 3/4" spacing, give or take, with the rim & tire in place. Including tire bulge, I'm looking at approximately 1/2" total interference problems.

Maybe only widening to 10.5" would basically set the tire just against the sheet metal, meaning minimal clearance needed to be done.

Maybe I'll just say screw it. Do the 2" widening & cut whatever metal is needed.

Re: TODAY'S 3 DIFFERNT UPGRADES ,18'S ,IROC GRILL, NEW 145 MPH CLUSTER

With 10" rims (tire mount) 11" from edge to edge you have 6.5" back space!!

To answer everyone in one reply

Only few hammering is needed on the left lower corner of the fender wall (talking about) driver's side and there is also a piece of metal that is nessecary to be hammere because if no you have tire rubbing!!

On the passengers side you need more hammering because there is more metal interfeering the tire sidewall!

And with stock lower control arms the work is perfect (as already said you will have about 0.5" clearance

For the guy planning to go to 11" rims with 315's
you must be sure that when you mount the tire on the 11" rim you have parallel sidewalls and not bulge sidewalls because you will add problems to this problem

So make sure that 315's will be wrapped on a rims that is same size of the width of the tire and not less , and will also say that with only hammering you will have rubbing because the front corners of the fenders are hard because there are 3 ply's of sheetmetal to renforce the bodywork!

In my opinion will never go more than 295's because you need more than hammering!!
even hammering was difficult to me for a 16000 miles car!! so further more will not do it for a 0.5" tire more!!

It was my opinion or else put on a 0.5" spacer and you have a 6.5" backspace but for sure you have to round the fender lip which also I dont want to modify because after you will have rust for sure!!

So go for a 10" rim with 295 and you will be more than happy!! (If you lower the car you reduce ground clearance and shorter the tire you see it look more wider!!!

And thanks again for the compliments

Magnavox..First my apologies for "hijacking" your thread into a wheel & tire fitment source.

OK...As for 295s....I ran the BFG 295/50R16s n my 92 years ago. I even know a guy currently running them right now. BFG specs a rim 8"-10" for that tire, so the stock 16" x 8" is within BFGs specs. Yes, 9" would be better, but even with a 8" rim, you don't get severe middle tread wear & no edge wear.

I already have 285/17s &295saren't enough more tire worth some sheet metal effort. 315s BARELY are but...

I could just go for a 4th gen rear & all would be good! Which, I suspect I mighta hafta do SOME day. The bigger rear brakes wouldn't be a bad thing anyways.

my first priority is not to use spacers to go out with the tire near to the fender lip ,if i wanted i went to 11" instead of 10" but you have to modify lip and inner fender and absolutely did not wanted to go out with tire out the fender more than that because the lower bumper is like a funnel and many meat of the tire is visible
