My '86 Iroc Build
Well, this isnt going to be one of those start and finished in a week kinda things. Im trying to be as low budget as possible.
I bought this 1986 Iroc last month for $500 the interior is almost perfect, aside from the dash cracks and the steering wheel.
The body is fairly straight but needs paint.
The worst part is the engine bay, which is a rats nest of wiring, it runs but it smokes,it has been converted from tpi to carb.
here it is the day i pulled it home:

Meh, they look O.K. but nothing special.
Great Deal on the car i'm very jealous of your interior.
However not so jealous of the body
You have alot of work ahead of you.
Good Luck on your build.

Re: My '86 Iroc Build
Now for the bad, i discovered alot of rust under the ground effects. also found where the PO put the main wiring harness from under the hood. It's literally cut straight through and left hanging inside the fender

Re: My '86 Iroc Build
Well, the easy part is taking them apart. Now the hard work begins. Rust doesn't look too extensive. Did you check the floorpans, hatch, etc..?? Definately going to need a complete engine wiring harness. That one isn't worth messing with. Going back with white? Looking good so far!

Re: My '86 Iroc Build
I've looked over the car pretty good, floor pans and hatch look really good, The only rust i can see is whats under the ground effects.
Its odd that all of those wires are cut because the car runs and all the gauges work. i guess thats all for the fuel injection and computer stuff.
I plan on painting it red, i've always wanted a red third-gen.
If it looks even half as good as 89ROC-Z's i will be pleased

Re: My '86 Iroc Build
That's good the floors are clean. The gfx sometimes hold dirt and debris against the body and out of the sun, so it's common to rust there. Red is a good choice, not that I'm biased. My '91Z that I'm working on was originally red, but I'm going with white. lol.

Re: My '86 Iroc Build
I just noticed the overspray on the taillights in the 3rd picture... would it have killed the PO to just tape em up right or remove em?

Re: My '86 Iroc Build
Sorry about the lack of updates. I will post pics as soon as i get the chance. i fixed the crack in the front bumper and have 4-5 coats of primer on it, and the body of the car is pretty much ready to block out and paint. the majority of the work i have left is in the doors, and the hood.

Re: My '86 Iroc Build
It's been a few years since I've updated this thread. Since then my wife and I had a baby boy, who is now almost 4! And also bought our first house. Best part is the 3 car garage. Sadly almost no progress has been made up until about 3 months ago. I'll try to catch up to where I am now.
