rear louver question
do i HAVE to buy a set of louvers that have the third brake light cut out? here in indiana i dont have to have it so if its covered im not worried about it. so if i buy a normal set will the louvers sit ontop of the brake light without any problems? my main concern is the louvers not resting on the back glass right.

Re: rear louver question
ive been wondering that to since i have the same question, i have seen cars with the third break light and the louvers they have on them dont. i have a feeling you gota do something. a car i almost bought had it, when you shut the trunk you had to hold the top of the louvers or they would snap becuase they would get pinched.

Re: rear louver question
it depends what louvers you get, if it has a spot for the third brake light that extrudes from the rear glass those are the only one that will fit. if anything take off the brake light. as for the pinching problem aqualord was talking about, it all depends on the kind you have, i have cragar louvers on mine and its help on by 4 metal clips that grip the edge of the hatch. and moine also hug the window itself very close

Re: rear louver question
If I remember correctly, they would be the same shape for the glass, but if you have a tint and want the louvers on it too, not such a good idea if you like to see outta your back hatch. With the lovers on it is harder to tell distance of traffic is. also if you would like to see if a cop is coming up behind you its alot harder to tell. I took my loovers off . b.c it was incredibly hard to see out with a dark tint and the loovers.

Re: rear louver question
Toxik what kind of louvers did you have on your car. on mine i can see out of them perfectly, it all depends on the height of your rear end, the thickness of each louver and your height.

Re: rear louver question
From what I've seen, they sell two types for those with third brake lights..."on top of glass" or "under glass" depending on what year you have.
I just ordered a set myself. I didn't need the third brake light option. I ended up ordering the one piece ABS - Astra Hammond 1101's. I kept finding used sets on ebay, craigslist etc. that were worse than the ones I already have.

BTW, I think the OP would need the Astra Hammond 10610's. But I'd call them to make sure.

Hey Confuzed1, did you order the set from this link? http://www.sfxperformance.com/parts/AST1219.htm
Because I need need some new louvers, bought mine used for 50 bucks, but they were missing the hardware and didnt realize it had hail damage till I took the paint off
I want to see another picture of what those look like in the link because they look awesome, it just seems like one of the pics in the link dosent fit the rear window.

Re: rear louver question
Oddly enough, I didn't bother checking out a 20+ year old sales brochure to figure out whether the aftermarket sold louvers without third brake lights or not. I guess I stupidly assumed they did and went with it. I read the OP's post....he needs a set with the "on glass third brake light"....not saying you're wrong but...
Cerridius- I actually got mine from StreetSideAuto.com - i ended up paying 201.95 and free shipping!!! I just couldn't pass it up since I wanted a set!

I wouldn't try to get GM ones anyway, far too expensive. There was a guy on here selling a set without the third light for 100.

Used is a good way to go...just be real careful on the condition. I haven't found a decent used set for me, but I'm kinda picky.

There so hard to find here. I want the ones that came on the car from GM. But I do like the first set you posted. Just too much money.

I hate to admit it, but once you start spending big bucks on blowers, rear ends, paint jobs, etc.. -you're kinda hooked from there. Spending on decent parts becomes easier...if that makes sense. lol ...

Oh man, I'm already hooked. I parted out my 1000 dollar PC to put money into my Camaro. And I plan to spend almost 5k on a built LQ4 when I get a job to fund it.

They list them as 82-84 Trans-am which is why they're hard to look up! Here ya go!

EDIT: You can look up the same model with pics etc. on the site I posted earlier in this thread. My order supposed to be at my door tomorrow!

Re: rear louver question
The louvers actually arrived today! That was super fast considereing they were ordered just barely two days ago. Made in Canada, and they are nicer than I thought they were. They have a "textured" surface which I wasn't expecting, but I like it better than smooth. I attached a couple pics for those that order these Astra/Hammond 1101's so you know what you're getting:

-I've noticed the ones that fit the third brake light on the outside of the window are rare to find used...esp. OEM type.

Re: rear louver question
Hey guys, hate to bring this one back from the dead, I'm looking into ordering the same louvers from streetside as confuzed1. I'm replacing my old wore out cragars. Now my question is; the ad on streetside says the louvers are for a 82-84 trans am. Now is the hatch the same shape/curvature as all other 82-92's (specifically an 89?); and also will these louvers fit with an aero wing (my firebird is a formula) and this one is for confuzed1.... How well do they attach to the car? Do they stay put on the highway/track? Sorry about all the questions guys but I wanna be as sure as I can that these will fit before I order them.

Re: rear louver question
Well, here's the pic I said I'd take of the louvers installed. Be warned that the upper holes near the hinge weren't drilled properly and interfered with the black plastic caps that covers the hinge bolts on the outside. I also do not care at all for the double sided stcky tape used to mount the brackets....even though they've been stress tested to 80 MPH and they're holding well. I wouldn't recommend these for a daily driver though because of that. The instructions say to remove them during the winter because they will become brittle and probably break during cold weather.
You either love 'em or hate 'em I'd imagine.

Re: rear louver question
and those are the ones from streetside auto? those look great are the brackets metal or plastic. my cragars have been on my car for 25 years and are still solid as could be, so maybe design some metal brackets for it and swap them out.

Re: rear louver question
The brackets are metal. I meant that the ABS plastic louvers themselves become brittle in cold weather, and they don't recommend you try to clear ice or snow off them because they might crack or break....they actually say to remove them during the winter.....and yes, they're the Astra-Hammond ones that Streetside Auto sells.

I have a S10-4WD and a '90 Z24 for the DD duties. And if those were to break at the same time, I have the '09 R/T Challenger as a desperate backup. lol

Re: rear louver question
It's OK tylercamaro...
Not too many people I know driving 82-84 Camaros as a daily driver though, but I'm sure there's a few. What I mostly see as DD's are '87 up (and most of them V6's) around these parts. Gotta remeber these body styles were built for 10 years, and technology changed a lot over those years. Crossfire to TPI injection was a huge improvement...heck TBI was huge too.
The CCC carb idea was laughable at best since the computers didn't really do much to the carb off-idle and were real limited by today's standards.
As far as louvers go as I said, you kinda love 'em or hate 'em. I gotta say, most people I've spoken to like the car better with 'em. I thought they would rattle like crazy, but they don't at all. Only time I know they're there is when I look in the rear view...hard to get used to.
I'm contemplating on lowering the car a bit ovr the winter...but not drastically since the roads here are crap. What's everyone else think? ...I can take it..I'm a big boy (fuguratively and literally lol)

Re: rear louver question
i drove my 85 as a dd for awhile to school and back mostly because the shell itself needs to be replaced so i saw no harm in it, i feel bad for my car but the louvers ive noticed help in summer to keep it cooler and my black carpet still looks black not faded one bit becaue the louvers have been on there so long. id say lower a little, the car looks a tad high and it would look great just a pinch lower, even though its probably one of my favorite 82-84's so far

I'm kinds concerned about two things though....that getting 1" lowering springs all around won't make any noticable difference, and if I get the "sportline" lowering springs (1.6" front and 1.3" rear) might be too much...

the velcro is probably your problem, they used little metal tabs on mine, idk bout stock but im assuming the were hinged at the top and something held them down on the bottom

I don't think thats why they're sticking up on top though...that's got to do with the way you have the upper hinges mounted somehow..

Re: rear louver question
People dont understand the physics of how sprigns work and think cutting them does all sorts of wonky things to them. you cut them without heating them up and it's fine.
