Paint is done (pg 2) - Purple Haze/ Silver Z03 Z28 convertible project: LT1/T56 swap
My dad is putting his LS1 swapped 1989 IROC-Z up for sale because he just brought this beauty home today. It's a purple '92 Z28 convertible, 74k original miles, disassembled right now and comes with enough parts to literally fill a U-Haul truck. There's enough parts to put the car back together in perfect condition and to make a small profit off of after selling the rest.
The parts shown below are about 1/3 of all the parts that come with the car. We're going back with an enclosed trailer on Saturday to get the rest, which includes 3 TPI setups, one being all aftermarket stuff, a full ceramic coated 3" exhaust system, a T5 trans, 700R4, doors, fenders, ttops even though it's a convertible, 3 or 4 sets of black seats, brand new black door panels, a few un-opened boxes from Classic Industries and Summit Racing (can't wait to see what's in those!!), etc etc etc. Notice below, there's three (3) leather wrapped '90-'92 Z28 steering wheels, one of them is brand new still in the box. There's a lot of brand new parts still sealed in GM bags!

Here's some examples of just a few of the brand new parts that came with the car. There's 2 new sets of the window switch/door handle plates...

Re: A 3rd gen gold mine (my dad's new convertible plus a bajillion parts)
It's better than Christmas! I just wish the circumstances were better for the seller, it was his father-in-law's car that passed away unexpectadly last year, and was in the process of restoring it. They have another gorgeous Z28 third gen and I hope I start seeing them around town at local shows with it, they're super nice people.

Definitely. I'll post up everything when we sort through it, and after we figure out what we need to keep I'll start adding for sale ads too.

Re: A 3rd gen gold mine (my dad's new convertible plus a bajillion parts)
We went and picked up the rest of the parts, had to make two trips with an enclosed trailer to get everything because there was still so much stuff. I found the original center console and matched the VIN number to the car to make sure... and I verified that it is indeed a true Z03 25th Anniversary Heritage Z28, I also confirmed that the 5spd was swapped in as it was originally an automatic. No big deal there, we prefer three pedals anyways.

We got two '90-'92 dashes with full interior wiring, and 4 dash pads haha

I forgot a few more pictures haha
There's a complete 3" stainless steel exhaust system with Hooker headers and what appears to be an SLP two on the left cat-back.

Here's a purple (looks blue in the photo) aftermarket intake. It's a ported plenum, edelbrock runners and an Accel manifold.

Re: A 3rd gen gold mine (my dad's new convertible plus a bajillion parts)
It came with a good L98 and a T5. He may buy a t56 but most likely will keep the t5 for cost purposes. He's gonna have the engine looked over and put in a good cam, and the aftermarket intake manifold and runners that came with it. He doesn't want a race car but the L98 should run pretty good when we are done.

It'll be a couple of weeks probably, maybe by the middle of June. We have to sort through everything and determine what we need to keep to put the car back together.
I picked this up for an early Father's Day present to my dad. I found it on Amazon.com of all places! It's NOS GM, still in the plastic bag. The dashes that came with the car all had 25th Anniversary RS emblems on them.

Re: Purple Haze/ Silver Z03 Z28 convertible project: LT1/T56 swap
The car is loaded up on our trailer, we're taking it to Kansas tomorrow for its new paint job. It's going to look a little different when we get it back.
Once the paint is done we'll start putting the interior back together. My friend is taking out a heads/cam/intake LT1/T56 swap from his 1996 SS, my dad has put a deposit on it already and it will be going in this car.

Won't have any updates for this project for a month, maybe a little longer. We are on our way back to St Louis from dropping it off for paint in Kansas.

Re: Purple Haze/ Silver Z03 Z28 convertible project: LT1/T56 swap
Ok just kidding. My buddy decided he was going to do his LS1 swap in his '96 SS sooner than planned so we pulled his drivetrain out this weekend and my dad got it from him.
Specs are:
350ci LT1
ARP head bolts
ported stock heads
ported stock intake (58mm)
2.05/1.60 Ferra valves
232/232 .608/.608 108LSA
CSR electric water pump
MSD opti and coil
Flow numbers on the heads:
.200 153/118
.300 207/167
.400 253/197
.500 275/214
.600 284/225
T56
Ram HD clutch
stock shifter, will probably get a hurst or Pro 5.0
Through a TH350 this engine put down 351rwhp/307ft-lbs. I believe it is probably closer to 380-390rwhp through the T56. The car that this came out of is a 3,020 lb Camaro that ran door to door, literally, with my 420rwhp Camaro that weighs 3,600 lbs.
Got a really good deal on this stuff because it's a friend of mine, paid $2,200 for eveything. It came with the full wiring harness and the ECM which is already tuned. So once the car is back from paint we'll be starting the install. We're both pretty excited!

Great score. I was kind of hoping to see this one keeping its original engine seeing how it's a Z03 and all, but to each his own.

Originality only holds value if you plan on selling a car. This is the car he's been hunting for 5+ yrs, it's going nowhere.
On the other hand, the black and red Z03 convertible we are restoring is all original except for aftermarket wheels.

Re: Purple Haze/ Silver Z03 Z28 convertible project: LT1/T56 swap
My buddy in Kansas who is painting the car thinks he's got the color figured out. The current color on the car isn't the original Purple Haze, it was resprayed with a 3 stage DuPont Chroma-base that is metallic (Purple Haze doesn't have metallic in it, just a mixture of pearls come to find out).
The paint he has picked out for us is the original Purple Haze with a few ounces of a suprise House of Kolor chamelean ( I don't know which one yet ) that he says will be hardly noticable, just enough to give it that edge. It will make it shift to a somewhat "blue" purple instead of a "red" purple.
He's going to mail me a sample spray here soon, so I'll' be sure to snap a pic for y'all.

Small update. My buddy started working on the car this week, he started removing things like the stripes and such. He's been pretty busy with other paint projects but now that he's started it shouldn't take more than 4 weeks or so for him to finish.

Re: Purple Haze/ Silver Z03 Z28 convertible project: LT1/T56 swap
No updates yet. LT swap instead of LS due to cost and the fact that I know this engine and what it's capable of, and who built it, and he paid $2,300 for engine/t56/wiring/ECM. You can't touch an LS swap for that.
Been busy buying a house for my wife and I so I haven't really been concerned with getting dads car back yet since we don't have time to work on it at the moment anyways.

Got some updated pictures today. We are planning to pick it up at the end of March, but will know an exact date probably next weekend. The base/clear has been laid, and this coming week the stripes will be laid out. The color is a special blend of the original Purple Haze/Hawaiin Orchid and House of Kolor "Chameleon".

My buddy that's painting it added a little black accent to the rear bumper. With black headlight buckets and door handles, he said the rear needed something too.

We thought about it but honestly we don't want to do it ourselves again and it would cost an extra $500 to have the painter do it.
