I need your honests opinions...

So here it goes... even though I would have thought I'd never get to this here I am...most of you guys know my camaro so I won't bother with pictures in this thread..

I have owned my camaro since I was 16 in highschool and have spent countless hundreds and thousands of dollars since then restoring and bettering it. As it sits now, all it needs is really new carpet (just because the old carpet is faded, its not stained or in bad condition, just sun bleeched) and new head gaskets. Both of which, I am probably going to get out of the way by the end of the summer anyways...

So this is my dilemma... I'm 20... already out of school...work full time (computer Analyst)... and own two cars...

First up is my Camaro... 1984... 2nd owner... 165xxx on the body 30xxx on drivetrain/engine rebuild. Really a beautiful car.

Build Sheet:

Engine:
5.7L v8 4bolt main 350 .30 bore/355cid
EdleBrock 750cfm Carb
Edlebrock RPM AirGap HighRise intake
Flattop Pistons
GM performance Vortec Heads
GM performance Cam
Accel Hot Coil Distributer

Suspension/drivetrain:
KYB GR-2 EXCEL Shocks and struts
Intrax Lowering springs
02 LS1 Alum Driveshaft
99 7.5in 10bolt LS1 4:10 Torson Locker Rearend
C5 17f/18r Corvette Rims paired with Sumitomo HTR Z III's
Built T5 WC Transmission
SPEC stage 2 Clutch

Dyno'd around 240RWHP...

Anyways...you get the idea...

Second car is my everyday car and its a 2001 Audi S4 with the works. Built in California by APR its a true Stage 3 package car, 3.6L TT car sitting with about 500AWHP... Car is my second baby now and I love it as much as my camaro...

Thing is... I have this beautiful camaro that sits all week until a car show and gets driven to a car show, shown off then returned home...

In your honest opinion... should a 20 year old be keeping up and paying for a car that he doesn't even use. Should I hold on to it? Should I see it off to a new owner and get my money out of it and stow away that cash in the bank... What should I do? Am I going to forever regret getting rid of the car? If I do hold onto it will I get more money out of it down the road? Or should I say my goodbyes to it and sell it while I KNOW its in pristine condition...

Let me know your thoughts... Thanks!

I am not so sure... I wouldn't be selling it to just anyone who offered me money because of how I view the car...and interestingly enough...the original owner has shown some interests in possibly buying it back from me now that Ive finish most of the restore.

Re: I need your honests opinions...

it's your car.. you decide? Coming here asking that question will get you obvious responses. You need to decide for yourself what's worth it to you. You also need to ask yourself if you're comfortable with the idea of someone trashing your car and/or running it into a pole; because by selling it - you're agreeing to that.

Your assets. You decide what to do with it.

Re: I need your honests opinions...

id say no to giving it to the original owner, id say if it comes down to it use it as a DD just for small errands or something just so it gets used more.

if you were to keep it and store it youd know its still yours because as soon as you sell it youll likely regret it. no one can take care of your car as well as you can. also do you allways have it insured? if so thats a large penny isnt it?

my thoughts are drive it alittle more but not overexcessively just so you have more use out of it and you get your money out of how much you pay for insurance

Re: I need your honests opinions...

I say keep it.
If you have spent a lot of money on it and have done most of if not all of the work your self, you've got to have a strong bond/attachment to the car. I know that I do with mine. As far as insurance goes you can fined a insurance co. that looks at miles driven and what the car is used for. They offer special coverage in certain situations.
If you really want to sell it my suggestion is sell it to some one there that has a car in the show. Its shows that he takes great care of his car/cars and I don't think he would treat yours any different.

Re: I need your honests opinions...

If you have a place to store it and can get collector car insurance cheap (I paid $300 for the year for my Firebird valued @ $20,000 (knight rider dash, etc))....

It's up to you...If you can afford it... is it still fun ?

I agree. get classic incurance...and as im guessing you said you were 16 when you got it..which makes it your first car im assuming. you know if you get rid of it, youll regret it and miss it cuz who doesnt with their first car. and honestly, after doing what youve done to it, youll regret giving it away. IMO, keep it stored, and drive it when you can. up to you in the end though

Just a thought, I sold a car when I was your age that I should have kept and I have kicked myself in the a** ever since. Just a thought.

Re: I need your honests opinions...

I've had my 87 since I was 18 and now I'm 36. It has spent 6 years not being used and now I'm finishing my restore and going to drive it as an extra extra car. I'm SOOOO glad I never sold it. In my opinion I would never find another one like it. If you are sick of it and don't like it, then of course sell it and move on. However, if you love it I think you would some day regret giving it up. It all depends on what you want.

Re: I need your honests opinions...

There are a lot of people on this forum and others that lament the selling of their first car and get to a point in their life where they spend a lot of money and time trying to 'find" it or a similar replacement. You are in a unique position to already have your first car. Find a suitable place and store it properly.
That being said, it doesn't matter what we say, it's your car...your choice.
I count myself among the ones that wish they had their first car back.

I say sell it if you are not planning on having time for it. Find a owner who will finish it that makes it easier. I sold my 82 Trans Am to a member here in the Netherlands and Really enjoy seeing the car being modified yet it's body staying stock looking. I couldn't justify not using the car anymore due to smog issues and a new project car and work and having my son a lot. The guy had wanted the car for a couple years and we finally struck a deal and off the car went.

Re: I need your honests opinions...

I still have my 84, it was the first car I ever bought (bought back in 91 or so).
I just got done restoring it, and so glad I didn't just sell it or scrap it. I've had this car for over 20 years, and I still find it fun to drive.

Agree on the classic insurance, I got it last year.
If you're only going to drive it to shows etc, then that's exactly what its meant for and you'll save a ton.

Mine was really nice to but twin_turbo aka Marck is really making it nice with a LSx and all kind of mods. It went to a good home and that gave me peace a mind, I blew off a lot of buyers because they talked about KITT'ing it and this and that. Most couldn't come up with a grand to buy it or tried talking me down. At least with marck he is a car guy and wanted the car for quite some time and I still see the car instead of wondering what happened to it.

Re: I need your honests opinions...

I am 26 and I have had 2 cars most of my driving life. I try to drive the GTA at leasnt once a week and on the weekends, however the parking situation at my job is very safe and the spots are HUGE so I don't have to worry about door dings.

I say keep it and drive it more often

Re: I need your honests opinions...

I'm 34 and have had a ton of cars and bikes since I was 16. I regret selling both my Stangs, the 90 Gt more so than the 95. I had a 72 Nova last year that I miss dearly and a few others I would love to have back. I have thought about selling my TA as I don't drive it much at all, I have 2 cars, a truck and a Harley and i'm single. I don't drive the TA much as I'm trying to keep the miles low as it's 95% OEM and has under 50K on it.

I say if you love your Camaro and can afford to keep it than do it, the market is only going to go up on our cars as they get older and harder to find nice.

In those situations, I feel it's best to sell those types of cars to a collector. My friend has a Monte Carlo SS like that. He drives it MAYBE 5 times a year, if that. It sits and collects dust a majority of the time. The best cars are the ones that are driven a lot. I would vote selling it; then buying a higher mileage TA and making it whatever you want. That's what I did, anyways.. granted mine only has a 125,000 in comparison - but still quite a bit of miles.

Re: I need your honests opinions...

Keep it. You will regret selling it, guaranteed. If you are already done with school and have a full time job and you've kept it through that, then the worst hurdle is over, now all that's left is to buy a house and then there's zero reason to ever sell it.
