I'm in trouble again... 1987 Sport Coupe
Well guys I did it again, and I'm still around to tell the story. I had a close friend of mine that had bought a Sport Coupe ROLLER and has just been sitting on it for a future project for some time. I have drooled over the pictures of the car, because it is almost exactly like the 85 Sport Coupe that I bought when I was 14 years old as my first car. So I had told him if it he ever wants to get rid of it he better call me. Long story short I was able to pick it up and help him out. It was so cheap that I didn't tell my wife until we had already agreed that it would happen... I'm in trouble... again haha! She cooled down after I told her how cheap it was so. We are cool. The wife and I are still talking about what will happen with the car, but my plan as I would like to, is to save the car and make it a project car for my son as his first car... Just like daddy's first car
The car... 1987 Camaro Sport Coupe. Was a LG4 305/ 700r4 combo car as it was born. Its original owner pulled the engine and dropped in some "hot" 383, and later pulled that to put it in another car. Hence the car being sold as a roller now. This car has been sitting for years with its original 80k miles, and as far as paper trail will show, I will be the 2nd owner.
The car has some small exterior issues that will need addressed, but for the most part very straight car with great condition paint for the age. The interior is very good shape, and I'm excited to see how well it cleans up.

Re: I'm in trouble again... 1987 Sport Coupe
The pictures I took when we got it unloaded and rolled back into the spot at my dad's place where I commanly stash my "junk". Sorry the pics are all cell shots and kinda suck.
For the time being it will probably just sit around and collect dust until spring. I bought a car cover for it, and might try and take some more pics of it to share.
If it goes for the kiddo, I will plan on throwing a 305 5spd combo of some sort into it. I think all kids need to learn to drive manuals, but maybe not the power of something bigger until he proves he can handle it or get awesome grades or something... so far down the road.
If I get my hands on it... I think a 5.3 carbed with a overdrive transmission and slam the holy hell out of it on some vintage looking 17x9.5's and keep the exterior close to stock... not sure.
Anyways! That's it, and I will post some more as I get into it more.

Father/son projects. I hear there's nothing like it.
Looks like your little guy has a ways to go yet though.

Yeah man its so many years down the road! LS1 Swaps will be old news, and not cool anymore haha! Car is straight enough, and with a $100 price tag I can afford to store if for him if momma thinks its a good idea, or do something else with it.

Re: I'm in trouble again... 1987 Sport Coupe
Nice. One day I'll tackle something like that with my daughter... Maybe... If I can ever even get my car finished. Correct me if I'm wrong though, but I thought only the 86's had the third brake light on the top of the rear hatch glass... 87 it went into the spoiler. Was that a z28/iroc thing only as this doesnt has a spoiler?

Nice find. It would be great to save for the father/son project. I'll be interested in seeing how it works out. Good luck with it.

I also kind of like the spoiler delete look. Are you going to keep it that way?

It is. I'm very happy to have it. The hard part now is not working on it.
I think so too. I got the car so incredibly cheap I will make money even if scrap weight values go up... even though I would never scrap this car. I started the thread to keep the project updated as slow an unsure of direction at this point. As far as spoiler goes... If it goes to my son, then I will leave it alone, and we will let him make some of those choices. I like them without it, but I have been dreaming of a Hawks 5" and a Jongbloed hood on a SC... slammered!

Re: I'm in trouble again... 1987 Sport Coupe
Here is the only two pics I have of me racing my 85 Sport Coupe back in '98 & '99 while in High School.
I smashed the 1/4 while doing some stupid "hey watch this" type **** at my GF's house... I later attempted body work on it and put 1/2" of bondo.
Pretty similar cars here...

Funny you say that. I've been developing a new spoiler this past month!

Judging by your little guy in the pictures, your father/son project is roughly 10 years down the road. Based on personal experience, I'd recommend fixing up whatever needs repair now to get it a basic driver and just maintain it for the next ten years. If you leave it until he's ready the body issues will be more severe and parts may be harder to find.

Great looking Camaro. My sister had a 86 just like it, it was red. I always tagged along in the back seat going to the beach.
I think she had paid $13,000 brand new in 86, it was in our family for years. I remembered she had no spoiler for it and it was bothering me, so at the age of 13 (my sis is 6 years older than me), I bought her a rear flush mount spoiler for Christmas with my paper route money.
My dad's an auto body guy so he squirted it for her. That car brings back some great memories.

Thinking about picking up a set of these 5th gen wheels. Kinda an updated SC look with modern sizes. I found some for under $100 bucks... I wouldn't do it if they were gonna cost more than the whole car.

Re: I'm in trouble again... 1987 Sport Coupe
Not too much to update other than a plan with the car...
I have bought and currently sourcing parts for a LS swap in my 91 Z28, so I will be pulling my TPI motor and installing that into the SC with a 700r4 for manors. I think it should make this car skoot along good enough that my son in the future can still have fun and not get into too much trouble with it.
I have been holding on to a set of 17x9.5 Epsilon mesh wheels that I intended on restoring and selling, but now I think I will be slamming this car on those with a 275 in the rear, and may run a 245 up front to be able to get it as low as I would like it to be.
That is all! Feels good to post again. Can't wait to actually post real updates on this, and my LS swap.

No I'm not sure I can wait I'm gonna get the wheels and tires together. We'll see how fast the LS parts stack up, if fast enough I'll yank the motor and play with this for the summer.

That's what I like to hear. I've got the LS bug as well. I'm about to pick up a T76 turbo if it's still available come payday. From the research I've done, it doesn't sound like too much of a headache to do the LS swap until you get to the wiring. It appears most parts are made ready to install with little headache. You've already got the T56, so why not! Go nuts!

The BRAKES have just been applied on all my projects...
Momma and I just found out we are bringing twins into the world this fall, so I gotta move some money around and focus on family. I don't plan on selling off this or the LS project so they are still a go, but will be put further back on the back burner.

Re: I'm in trouble again... 1987 Sport Coupe
Back from the dead! Some of you that followed along in this saw we had twin babies... It totally slowed down car projects, but didn't stop them. This car is floating to the surface and will be getting drug to the shop in the next couple weeks to start sorting it out.
Plans, it will be getting my 91 TPI 305 out of BADNBLK, along with all the nice polished bits, and bolt on go fast stuff. I've got a lower mile 700r4 to put behind it, and have slowly been collecting suspension bits, and little resto stuff I need. Big goal is to make it run first, then I will clean it up further.

Re: I'm in trouble again... 1987 Sport Coupe
Since I now have tires (Toyo R888's in 275/40R17), I needed to dig out the wheels I'm gonna run on it so I can mount them all up.
I'm running a 17x9.5 Epsilon Mesh, wheels. I have restored a couple sets of these, and finally keeping a set for myself. I think these will have the perfect vintage performance look for the car.
I broke them down, and began the process of media blasting the centers to remove the paint down to the oe paint (great base). I then sanded the face of the spokes to remove any imperfections.
I'm painting the centers with VW Platinum grey metallic paint. Here they are with color coat before clear coat.
I'll have pictures with clear coat on and wheel/s re-assembled very soon.

Re: I'm in trouble again... 1987 Sport Coupe
I liked the bare look on the face of the spokes that I chose to keep it. I brushed the spoke faces.
I still need to clear coat the entire face of the wheels to protect the bare metal brushed finish, but I couldn't resist partially setting one of the centers in the wheel to get an idea how they will look... I'm pretty happy. Has a vintage performance look I wanted, but is clearly not a GTA wheel.
