1988 IROC purchase

Well, I searched for the proper place for a "Looky what I bought" posting but not sure were that is so This is a how about this original IROC thread, LOL

I happened to be on FB Friday when this was posted for sale and I snatched it up before the owner, (who inherited it from his original purchaser grandfather) found out his price was light!!
70K miles and as clean underneath as on top. Nothing to excite as for options but everything works but the tach which hangs around 4500 all the time. Cragar hatch louver might have to go. Everything is OEM under the hood, LB9. Most important is #1 likes it, she helped clean it up. Perfect condition for a driver car, a few dings but nice from a few feet back. I think I am OK with 5K invested

Great deal! Love the color too!

This car would be posted on EBay by a classic car dealer as a one owner barn find for $14,000 so I think you made out just great!

I know what you mean,, Ever wonder if any of those cars sell?? Watching the popular car sites asking prices makes it look like I stole it but I (think?) the reality is I bought it real right. I cant ever seem to get things in the right light to take a picture. Interior is clean with one little flaw in the drivers seat. It doesnt have that old car interior smell or the dreaded been wet smell. Been parked up front at the grocery store and wallmart a few times and they ran the nose into a curb more than once. Black wasn't at the top of my list by a long shot but at least it doesn't have a red interior Cant handle that combo.

i hear you, my Vert only had 30k miles but the front spoiler looked like it scraped a curb at some point and of course it makes the old 80s paint spider crack because they didn’t use flex additive back then! With the repaint he said the nose will never crack again.. he actually picked it up when it was off the car and shook it around to demonstrate.. that wasn’t my favorite 😬

Nothing nicer than a really clean, polished black car! Black with blue stripes and grey or black interior is a good combo! (I hear you on the red)

there are upholstery and convertible top shops that can fix seat blemishes.. they can repair torn leather and even cigarette burn holes in cloth and make them almost invisible.. It’s usually not too pricey either.

I think this classic car dealers advertise “those” cars for about a year and then they sell for thousands under asking price. I’m sure every once in a while someone with more money than sense with the nostalgia bug pays the asking price.

again, you stole that car.. enjoy!

Re: 1988 IROC purchase

I'm beginning to think that FB is the best place to find a car. I check eBay frequently, but it just seems that sellers there are simply trying to flip a car they found locally or on FB.

All I ever see on Facebook classifieds is the same junk that's listed on Craigslist around here. I tried following a few of the Thirdgen enthusiasts groups, and couldn't take the astounding lack of knowledge.

Fortunately, I'm trying my best to not obtain any more thirdgens. Kinda figure I'm missing out on deals, at least on parts or something, but the region kinda seems like a wasteland for thirdgen stuff. What's out here is overpriced or completely used up. Occasionally it's all of the above.

Re: 1988 IROC purchase

Gotta check every day and maybe 2-3 times/ year something really good will pop up.. they sell quick though..

But if you don’t want any more thirdgens, why bother? I always have to check..

Re: 1988 IROC purchase

Agreed, You have to check FB frequently or set it up as a search so you are notified when a new posting matches. I was on FB on my desktop when the app on my phone signaled a new posting for this one. Took me just an hour to to get there and had I not I would have missed it because he had other people in line. Probably basic to most but you have to search, Camaro, IROC and Z28 separately on FB unlike some of the more popular auto sites.

Yep. My wife found mine on FB. 71 yr old man had it. In a garage with a nice collection of other cars ranging from a T-Bucket, 40 Coupe,GTO to a Z06 Corvette.

I don't mind the people who aren't knowledgable. They may be new to 3rd gens and need some help. I do mind the " know it alls" who have all the wrong info though. They usually need to be cut down to size.

I'm not looking for any more 3rd gens either, but they seem to find me.

Finally..been waiting for the pictures. Black with the blue stripe is what I wanted when I was in high school but ironically have never owned one with the factory blue stripe. Congrats on the purchase, there is certainly slim pickings around here and it looks like you got a good one!

Oh I'm with you, I don't mind helping anyone learn about the cars. It's just an uphill battle when the 'King of the M*U*L*L*E*Ts' is spewing nonsense, and five or six other people are repeating some rumor they read or heard somewhere, but didn't understand, or the person they got the info from didn't know any better or was telling tall tales... At least around here, most of that nonsense gets sorted quickly.

I wasn't really looking for the last 5+ thirdgens I've owned. They're always either too good to pass up, or they're priced right. The current project was like that, I tried every excuse under the sun not to bring it home. Too far away, no place to put it, no title... Seller got the title, buddy said he'd store it until I was ready for it, and he'd pull it half way across the state and deliver it to me. I'm a sucker for a thirdgen. Every time.

Re: 1988 IROC purchase

Nothing special under the hood, LB9 that is pretty much as it left the factory. Dullness of the inner fenders and such is thanks to Zebart. And a other since we spent an afternoon on it with Mequiars, dressed in it's Sunday best.
