My 91 Z28

Hi everyone,

Years ago I had to sell my Firebird because life happens. This past weekend I was able to finally get a third gen again.

It’s definitely not perfect, but overall it seems the engine is in great shape. I did notice driving it home that she was running warm and the oil pressure was running high, so I bought a new fan switch, 180 thermostat, and a new oil pressure switch as well.

As you can see from the pics, the front end of the car is in pretty good shape. Unfortunately, the rooftop and the end the clear coat is gone and the paint is faded. I want to keep it the original color and have it done right. There is no rust of the car anywhere. The bad part is when I looked for the code sticker for the car, it’s gone. So I’ll have to try and match the color as best as I can.

The interior is in pretty good shape. Rips on the seats but it doesn’t bother me so they’ll stay. At some point I’ll get them fixed up. Right now my main focus is the mechanics side like the engine and transmission, which it’s the 5.7.

I love IROC wheels, but these are 20in rims that the car came with and Im not quite sold on them yet. Luckily, the last owner gave me the original rims with some good tires as wells maybe I’ll just switch back to stock.

I also have some new spark plugs for the car I’m putting in tomorrow. Well that’s it for now. I’m pretty sure the color for the car is WA9540, but I have to do some more research just to be sure. Thanks for looking guys.

Thank you. After going back and forth Today I took off the 20 in IROC wheels and put the stock wheels
back on the car. Handles and drives so much better now. Unfortunately the pesky fuel pump seems to be going out ( takes about 5 seconds of cranking to start) so its gonna have to be the next thing to replace.

Look in the locking compartment in the trunk. Change the fuel pump relay before changing the pump. Call it a hunch.

Wow, that was a damn good hunch. I found both the RPO code sheet and after changing the relay she seems to be starting up a lot better.

Re: My 91 Z28

The fuel pump wiring is setup with a redundant circuit. When the fuel pump relay doesn't kick in, it's bypassed by the oil pressure switch, so as soon as the engine makes oil pressure the pump will come on regardless. Eventually if it gets bad enough it'll throw a check engine light and set a code, but it can take awhile for that to happen.

Mid-91 GM moved the decal to the trunk box, except on convertibles which don't have the trunk box in 92.

The FLT rpo code is a bit unusual. Pretty good indicator the car was ordered as part of a fleet. It may be worth getting a copy of the invoice and seeing what it might tell you about the car's history. Might be something interesting there.

I am quite interested in its history so I think I will. After installing the new fan switch and thermostat she’s running a lot cooler as well. That oil pressure switch was hell to get out though. I did notice that one of the last owners at some point installed an aluminum radiator. Looks like it’s a 3-core one but can’t tell which brand it is.

Re: My 91 Z28

3/15:

New AC Delco spark plugs installed and NGK spark plug wires installed as well. New O2 sensor. Unfortunately I can’t pass smog. The Cats underneath sound completely empty so I have to get 2 new ones, plus now the check engine light is coming on during highway drives, but it’s off when I start the car up. Also, I noticed a grinding sound upon first start up in the morning. I’m wondering if the starter wasn’t installed correctly.
