The end of a long road

So as very few would know I bought at 1982 Z28 last year, over the time of me owning it, I found out the previous owner had not replaced the headgasket like he said in the 305 and instead let me find out myself, i pulled out the 305 and started looking for 327's (had a weird bug to do a 327 in a 3rd gen) while i was looking i figured well 350's are cheap and fairly common to have a 4-bolt main so why not, found a boost project engine from my local engine shop (Gabels in Akron, OH) that had been in for their forged pistons, rods and crank, while they also bored and polished the heads and threw in a very mild cam. as I drooled over this engine i figured i could not afford it as im a teenager and only make $13 an hour and i had already dumped my savings on just buying the car and why would such a nice engine just be soo cheap right? Well I decided to call and ask about it and they had told me the guy had been making payments while they build it and he called a few months ago to tell them he no longer wanted to pay as he had found a already built 383. So when i asked the question with my fingers crossed that maybe this one chance is a sign that my car was not doomed to be the winter beater on offer up for $500 that someone no longer wants and this engine would be fairly cheap for what it has done (id figured it would be priced around $1200-$1300) when i heard them say the words of "well we do need it gone" my eyes opened very wide and they said the price was only $800 because thats all the guy had left to pay as they were just finishing up the intake.

Gonna have to post in two parts so

Re: The end of a long road

After hearing these news I said "when can i come get it" mind you with no truck or anyway to haul this engine back to my house (I daily a hyundai elantra yes its good on gas and no i dont like it all that much) but i just accepted this deal because i didnt want to miss it. 2 days later i call and told them my friend would have his truck and we can come pick it up, they agreed and had it ready, in my now 18 years of life i have never been soo happy to see a object that can only produce sound and power. So we get the engine home and there it sat on my engine stand for a month because guess what i need money to do an engine swap who would have guessed. so after saving up money for little things like a new oil pan (yes i paid for moroso for the sticker and i regret nothing" and headers and fluids i dropped it in my Z28 (nickname: Black Betty) and for some reason i just thought it would all be easy and done within the week. Well months have now passed and never have i heard this car start with this engine and i missed the sound of it cranking even, well as more moths went by of me just looking at my car with this beast of a heart I didnt get it done it just sat. Well along came TGO and i started asking questions and getting answers and it helped here and there but nothing ever really gave me what i really meant to ask it was always follow this link but no "you might have to do this instead" well then came along T.L. and he answered almost everything i had to ask and i had told him i wanted this car running and driving by my Prom night. Well all i will leave now as a little cliffhanger is there is a lot of rubber in my high school parking lot and a my prom suit smells like no cat exhaust and 93 octane.

Wow, that's a great story. I'm really glad you got it running again. It's also always cool when I see someone from your generation who likes old American cars...

I'd like to add something here. I'm not one of the top dogs or gurus here. The ONLY reason I was able to help out with some useful information is because of all the really great members here who have helped me. There are some super knowledgeable thirdgen owners here, and in my opinion, they deserve a lot of credit for all the help they've been to complete strangers all over the world. In reality, it's because of THEM that you got your car running...

These are the sort of threads I live for. I bought my first thirdgen when I was 18 and to say I was addicted is an understatement. Now I'm 43 and am on my 9th thirdgen and 2nd second gen and will probably buy and sell countless more before I take my last breath. Keep the passion going and good luck with your build!

Re: The end of a long road

Also ill follow up with why out of all cars I wanted to buy i mainly looked for a 3rd gen, when I was 4 my dad had a 1991 RS (305, T-5, T-Tops) and on my first day of school thats how i got there, everyday it was nice around 7pm (when he would get home from work) we would go for a cruise and get ice cream or just go down to the beach and play by the water (used to live in conneaut), and i even remember what really got me to respect this car was the day we slid through the main intersection of my hometown with soo much ease, but as time came he had gotten a work injury and needed 2 herniated discs in his back and his insurance wouldnt cover everything cost wise for the surgery and not to mention the pain he would be in. When i was 8 is the day I watched that my dream car drive away with someone else driving it, i missed that Teal RS for a while, well later on down the road my uncle had found the car for sale for $500, someone had basically ruined this car, subframe was rotten, floor pans were rotten, strut towers rusted through and when my dad owned it this car never even seen rain. my uncle bought it and fixed it up and tried his hardest to not drive it in the snow (he was 17 at this time and it was his only car) so yes he would walk to school most days of winter so the car didnt suffer anything. and after that never seen the car for almost 6 years (dad and mom divorced and i lived with mom) well finally about 2 years ago i got to see the car and what my uncle had done to it is what got me most addicted to these cars, he had a ZL1 4in cowl hood, lowered it, done and exhaust, tinted the windows but never did any clear coat touch ups or got new wheels, this car still had the factory teal wheels that matched the car. and i remember saying this "it my be the last thing i do but this car is gonna be mine" my uncle laughed and said no he was taking it to the grave but still had a feeling i would get it one day. as i turned 16 I was saving like people back in 1930s, not a dime spent on anything but insurance and gas. found a few 91's but none that were like his. so i figured might as well make my own "Dream car" i looked and relized i do like the 1982-1984s front end a little more and little things all around so i found the car i bought just 5 mins away, guy said $1500 and it was all mine, well i had only saved up $1200 at this point and he settled with $1,000 so of course i spent the $200 on fluids and a car wash and as i pulled down my street to park my new to me camaro smoke just shot out from under the hood and through the exhaust. i pulled in my drive way crying cause i thought this was then end my car was destined to go to a scrap yard or become a winter beater. but no i ended up saving her, and i will never ever let this car leave me. soo many memories are in just with my friends handing me sockets and wrenches. I obviously have made the joke of "im sick of this mf im gonna sell it" but really even if this car gets totaled it will sit in my back yard and be a memory of how I did what i had always wanted to.

Great story. A lot of us have similar stories. One of these days I'll tell mine too, though it is nothing special. Just great memories of these cars and a love affair with 3rd Gens that started when I was a kid.
